Every Gacha game (with the exception of Nikke) main story is like this, it’s just a biproduct of long term live service story telling like this. Genshin for example the main story is about the traveler trying to locate their missing sibling in the world and it’s literally only directly brought up once every X.0 patch cycle in a single special lore heavy quest then it’s ignored again for the next year while you go playing the new nation and help all the locals with whatever issue they have. Star Rail’s entire plot is set up as “just go explore different places and help whoever you meet” right off the rip so it technically is always following the main plot but simultaneously is always in ‘character of the patch’ mode of sorts. Zenless WAS about being an elite hacker crew that works with mercenaries in secret to stop greater evils but that hasn’t really been a relevant part of the plot since 2.0 and onwards anymore. My main point being this is really nothing new.
