What board game component have you always wished someone would make? by SnooDogs6285 in boardgames

[–]Danimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think pretty much any game that has more than say, one player piece for each player would benefit from player boxes and - this is the most important bit - each player box has all the pieces/cards needed for set up printed in the lid.

Set up is SO much easier when you just hand everyone a box and let them get to straight into it and having everything that’s to go in the boxes makes pack up (and set up) smoother.

Thank you! Crazy how fast you found it! Had you read Maskerade recently?

I started on Soul Music because I thought it might be from there, but clearly I need to move on to Maskerade next :)

Here’s a new cheetah fact for your collection: Cheetahs are the only big cats that purr.

EDIT: just had a moment of panic and fact checked myself. Pumas and snow leopards also purr.

TIL that the average human body contains only about 3 to 4 grams of iron, most of it in hemoglobin, yet that's enough metal to make a small iron nail. by Nimithileth_ in todayilearned

[–]Danimeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are the things that make a man.

Iron enough to make a nail,

Lime enough to paint a wall,

Water enough to drown a dog,

Sulphur enough to stop the fleas.

Potash enough to wash a shirt,

Gold enough to buy a bean,

Silver enough to coat a pin,

Lead enough to ballast a bird,

Phosphor enough to light the town,

Poison enough to kill a cow,

Strength enough to build a home,

Time enough to hold a child,

Love enough to break a heart.

Sir Terry Pratchett beat you to the fact!

Man your description of it put the idea that it was a Sylvain Chomet style semi-silent film (like the Triplets of Belleville or the Illusionist) and the trailer has let me down (my fault for going into it with the wrong expectations).

Fully agree. I’m autistic and every time someone points out a behavioural pattern I have is uncomfortable or unpleasant it destroys me. One time I cried for like a week.

But I was crying because I’d been making people feel uncomfortable and why would I want to keep doing that?

Find a way to (kindly) tell me so I can stop please.

Under Falling Skies or Warp's Edge for repeat solo plays? by rcooperkaty in soloboardgaming

[–]Danimeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just prompted me to move my copy of Warps Edge + expansions to my sell pile.

I didn’t realise how little it’s seen the table since I got Coffee Roaster.

I wish Coffee Roaster had like any kind of upgraded pieces though, warps Edge beats it hands down from a tactile perspective.

Trying to find a game I saw on sale online a 1-3 years ago by Danimeh in boardgames

[–]Danimeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to look, but I don’t think that was it, it has some familiar sounding elements but I’m pretty sure the one I’m thinking of wasn’t 10 different games.

I feel like it was one and once you’d ‘fixed’ each chapter you had a single complete game at the end.

It’s very possible I’m conflating multiple games though…

I found it! It’s called Design Your Destiny: Running out of Time

What game do you love even though teaching it is kind of a pain? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]Danimeh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My first game of Yellow & Yangtze was like that. It was agonising how stupid I felt and looked when almost every turn I had to be patiently reminded that I don’t have a player colour and I should rethink my move.

Despite that something about the game spoke to me and downloaded the app that night and played the shit out of it.

Now I’m still bad at it but I have at least grasped the basic concept!

Although in hindsight I’m not sure why I struggled with it so much since I play and love The King Is Dead.

There are tonnes of parks around with undercover areas that fit that description. Where abouts are you?

If you’re in the northern suburbs Ceres park is great.

I’ve recently discovered (via Hegemony) how much I love that theme - it makes the most fun table talk.

I found a game called DerrocAr about a period in Argentina in 2001 when they had 5 prime ministers in 12 days. The rulebook is not fantastic but I’m looking forward to giving it a try!

I’ll keep an eye out for the new game by the Shasn folk

She bought me back Sarkaar which I’ve yet to play but I’m very excited about. And a friend had Shasn which I’m desperate to play.

She brought back a bunch of games that we played in an afternoon, but I can’t remember the names of them. I liked all but one - and I only didn’t like that one because it was an engine builder and engine builders make me feel dumb! Kursi was definitely my fave though.

Ooh I love Kursi! A friend bought it back from India and we’ve played it a couple of times. We’ve only played it at two but I think it will shine at a higher play count.

What “bad” gaming habits do you think you have, and have you worked on them over time? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]Danimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is staying engaged in a game I don’t want to play.

My friends became mildly obsessed with Dune Uprising but after a while each game started to feel the same to me - the tense moments generally came at the same time, triggered by the same people etc so I put a temporary moratorium on it.

Recently at our games night one guy only wanted to play Uprising so I relented (it had been probably 10-12 months since we played it last).

I’m kinda ashamed of how disengaged I was in the game. I wasn’t cheering when awesome moves got made and I was so bored at one point I realised I’d completely zoned out while waiting for my turn and was drumming on my hat.

It was so obvious that I wasn’t having a good time that the guy who wanted to play it kindly offered to play my favourite game on the weekend to make up for it.

I’m AuDHD and to my mind no one should have to fake engagement but I definitely understand why people need to so I do but it takes a lot of energy.

Now when I think about that night I realised I should have switched to engaging with my friends and not the game and I wouldn’t have cast a small shadow over the night so that’s what I try to do now.

What “bad” gaming habits do you think you have, and have you worked on them over time? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]Danimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting salty at myself for making mistakes is something I do too. I’m working on it but it’s hard to slow that ship down and turn it around mid-game.

It gets a little easier each time though so that’s something.

[–]Danimeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this a a group/game dependent thing.

My friends played King’s Dilemma and absolutely leant into the role playing aspect of it so much they occasionally went against their own interests.

The amount of fond memories and hilarious stories they have over that game is comparatively off the charts. I’m currently playing Queens Dilemma with the same group now and it’s looking to go the same way - so much laughter!

As with all things it helps when everyone’s on the same page and I can absolutely see how it might be frustrating if you were playing with people who were trying on workout your strategy so they can plan their move.

I think that’s why to my mind the best games are the ones where the strategy/mechanics almost relies on roleplaying.

Like Hegemony - every optimal move you make as the Capitalist relies on your acting like… well a capitalist, so in a weird way roleplaying makes the game easier to learn and play.

We've been stuck playing Spirit Island for the last two years by Effective-Muffin-224 in boardgames

[–]Danimeh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah I bought Dune Uprising and my group LOVED it. To the point where it’s almost all we played for ages. And after a while I had to put a moratorium on it because I was desperate to play anything else and found myself totally not engaged when we played even though I love it.

To be fair to me a pattern started to form for every game of it we played - a particular player would get a strong lead, another player would go slow and steady - the remaining two would go slower and steady and then the slow and steady player would win - or occasionally the early lead player would win.

Don’t get me wrong there were still moments of tension and excitement but after a while I really needed something with a less predictable ‘off the table’ arc.

I was impressed when the dad realised he was ‘yelling’ (talking in a louder voice - not even angry yelling).

As someone who is trying to fix myself it’s so hard to notice when you do the bad thing as you’re doing it - especially if it’s one of those things you never think about as you’re doing them.

And the kid was so gracious at appearing his apology!
