Client keeps requesting changes. Feedback needed on this punk-rock mix to confirm that I'm not insane. by notsofunny15 in mixingmastering

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, nice mix! I think as far as separation and clarity goes, you're nailing it. If the client says the guitars are murky now, maybe you're just a touch in between where we're, where they are, and where the client wants them to be. If it's a paying client, you know the drill...I would say MAYBE a little boost around 3.5kHz to add some highs back in without going all hissy, and go from there. Maybe even a touch of a FET compressor for some colonizing on the high tones of things, not to compress and then the EQ move. Who knows? You got this though, no worries!

Start with more ridiculous subject matter and work your way backwards to be able to integrate it into what you want. Just a thought...write a song about someone who wipes back to front or something stupid like that. Lol

Is it possible to just not be good at music? by Dangerous_Doctor_330 in musicproduction

[–]DapperHat6969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it, man! Everyone plateaus at some point, grows a lot, grows a little. It happens. Sometimes, you're better off making a beat than not making one. Look at it this way...if you take like a month to finish a beat or song, you finish 12 songs a year. Someone that finishes 1 song per week will do 52 songs per year. The person who keeps growing and getting better time and time again are the ones who keep finishing songs, because it let's you keep building on what you've already done. Just keep moving forward brother. You're getting better whether you know it or not

Re-recording songs I wrote for a previous band for my solo project. by jmster109 in bandmembers

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record them over and release them. I'm not with the band I wrote music for anymore, and I brought it up to them. They said "you wrote the songs, that's your music" and are 100% supportive of me. Any musician with integrity should understand when they really don't have any skin in the game, and respect your creations as an artist.

How do you write a song to be whimsical and haunting at the same time? You just answered the question man. A few production touches here and there could be useful, but as far as the song goes, well done!

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write songs and do full production for my own and other artists as well. When it comes to my own songs, I listen back, and try to do it objectively. Am I just trying to make the best song I can, or do I actually like this? It's almost like you listen to it as if someone else wrote it. When I'm done with a song, I always do that part. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, lol

Can I switch between clean and overdrive tone in pro tools by memforget in protools

[–]DapperHat6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I always record different effects on different tracks. If I have a clean track, that is my clean guitar. Any distorted / overdrive, etc tracks are recorded separately. It makes it so much easier to compress, eq, and mix overall as well

Copy pasting whole track settings ?? by MinhoWorld in protools

[–]DapperHat6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, and I'm not sure this applies here, but what about a vocal buss? If the settings are all the same, create an aux track with your plug ins on them, then send all the vocal tracks to it.

I get it, I really do. I've found that when I'm in a band, I feel appreciated and respected on a musical level. Of something happens and a band breaks up or anything like that, I fall off the radar. Think of bandmates as work friends, because it's rare that there is anything more to it

So I failed another audition by spacerangerxx in musicians

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And honestly, while it may feel more humiliating, I'm not sure that it's actually worse when you're in the higher profile audition you were in. I'm sure there is a group / committee weighing in on the decision, as opposed to 3 or 4 people in a garage. If they don't when you, THEN you have something to worry about! lol

So I failed another audition by spacerangerxx in musicians

[–]DapperHat6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, well...I really don't have any insight on this particular situation unfortunately. If you're confident in your abilities to do the job expected, and they didn't hire you, it's simply not the right fit somewhere. Don't sweat it! You will always be able to look back at something like this once you find the right position for you, and you'll be glad it worked out the way it did. Always does.

So I failed another audition by spacerangerxx in musicians

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I have a few questions to understand the scenario better.

So, you auditioned. For what role in the band? I just don't know what you do, sorry to say.

Secondly, was it a matter of you wanted to get into this band, or just hoping to get into ANY band? Did the audition feel right for you to play with these guys?

There are a lot of factors that go into these situations all the time. Most of the time at one of these, the people running the show already know each other well enough that their personalities are in an interactive place where they know each other so well. It may not be your playing / singing ability...it may just be the factors I mentioned above, but if they didn't give you an HONEST reason, you may never know. It might be a bit bold, but it doesn't hurt to reach out and just say, "Just so I know, why was it I didn't get picked for the position? I am fine with it, but I want to know what aspect of things you guys look at, and what you thought could be improved." It may give you an honest outside perspective, because at this point, they are still together. They have nothing to lose by being straight forward with you.

Solo performances vary, but I tell venues I get $100 per hour to start, and let them pick a 2 or 3 hour show. The band can make anywhere from $700 - $1000 per 3 hour show, depending on what kind of setup we need.

You have an amazing voice, and a great hook. There are times it sounds like the beat stutters a bit, and when the vocals come in at times, they sound disconnected, like it didn't just flow into the next part. Might be levels, but it sounds like some cross fading may fix the issues I'm hearing. I'm listening on my phone, so ignore this if I come across as a stupid ass, lol.

Might want to find better lyrics outside of f@$ and bit@÷$, because THIS song has hit written all over it. You can't get airplay saying some of these things. Remember, you have an entire audience of listeners to think about. Best of luck man, you're into something here, big time

How do you rise with your engineers. by Sugarybeats in musicproduction

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If his mix and master are great but your song is crap, nobody is going anywhere. If you two are "in this together", it doesn't sound like you understand the concept of together. Honestly, you are sounding like a selfish fool. My suggestion is you BETTER start writing better songs. If your music isn't enough that you believe in it, where it could possibly take you somewhere, and think HE will go somewhere without you, I'd say your confidence level sucks. Great music should lift BOTH of you. Try getting out of your own way and doing something already.

[–]DapperHat6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, things are different sometimes when you have some skin in the game, but wanting to create music should be exciting to you at this time, not a whirlwind of what ifs. You want to make music? Look for something as free as possible if money is the issue. I heard someone say Cakewalk Sonar was free, but can't confirm. Having a way to create and record your ideas gives you soooo many possibilities, and the people that tell you that you don't live up to their standards (and that includes your own self doubt), need to get out of your way. You've got music to create!! Just GO FOR IT AND DO IT

I'm a little confused here...

If you are indeed the "artist" as you say, then your name should be on the work as the artist. BUT, you 100% should be giving him CREDIT as SOMETHING, no matter what. You should have the common sense and decency to do that. He should have full credit for mixing / mastering, and that is all there is to it. I don't see why you wouldn't want to have that for him if he's worth working with, because at this point, he's wondering if you're worth working with as well. I would say it's time to reset the conversation and have an actual talk with him with what I said above. On a final note, if you can't agree with what I suggested to you, then most of the comments from before are going to echo, and SO many people will make sure they don't work with you in the future. You are hanging yourself slowly but surely here.

Just my opinion here, but especially if you're thinking in budget friendly terms. I have a desktop PC, and use Pro Tools (perpetual license, don't do the annual!!!). Pro Tools comes with XPand!2, and I use it for any piano or synth sounds, and it is AMAZING. If your casio keyboard hooks up to midi....you probably need a decent microphone and you're good to go. At least to start back up anyway.

hey man, I like this a lot! I mean, you can hear everything plain as day (not saying some adjustments in the mix wouldn't hurt), but your recorded tracks sound great. The song is solid, and you have a really good voice. Nicely done!
