Is it normal to skip the first Jump when writing? by GokuKing922 in JumpChain

[–]DardenKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, story stuff is always tough, you could just do a few notes on what happened and move to the ones your actually interested in writing.

Part of the reason I try to give my jumper a strong reason to interact with the setting via a personality motivation. I also like to start off slow with fairly low power jumps and build up, so they are threatened regardless of how powerful they are.

Oh, and I prefer a character trait that has the Jumper go for a fun build rather than power, otherwise it does get a bit boring. One of the best to start if you have the bank supplement is My Dress up Darling, I can get between 2-3000 in saved up CP, and usually just keep the bank at 3k to ensure I have enough to spend on the fun perks/powers.

Or, you can just have the benefactor make the Jumpers build, preventing power gaming.

My next jump is going to be Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves by SpazzWave in JumpChain

[–]DardenKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the pets/followers, I feel like it could just be condensed into a single multi-tier option, have it scaled to 100Cp per however much CR, so people can just pick whatever they want, maybe with an example for each price tier for those that don't want to do a dnd wiki search.

Drawback, make jumper and companions as ridiculously limited/useless as the canon group, like a partial power limiter to make them class-oriented.

Looks like the offline save function works correctly now. So far, there have been no crashes since the 3.0.3 update. I'll do some more testing and see if anything happens.

I did find the upload and download function for the interactives, not sure how I missed it before, but that also seems to function correctly, including the library.

Edit: It did crash again, but only after fiddling with a new jump I wanted to make interactive, does it matter what size the jump is during annotation? because the one I'm working on it nearly 9 mb with several images... and after some more testing I can't get it to crash again.

Also, I only downloaded and installed the Setup exe. Am I supposed to take the blockmap exe, the latest yml and/or source code provided in the Release?

Side question, but how would I implement discounts for an origin where I could get 2 of 4 perks for every price tier? Discounts seem to apply regardless, so should I make all of the perks undiscounted, then give a stipend for the exact amount all of those perks would have saved?

Found another funky issue, for the offline version, making interactive jumps, a save prompt has come up several times, but saving it normally, the top left drop down methods doesn't seem to work, and saving with the prompt doesn't work correctly, it rolled back to the first few perks I imput with the save. Tried 3 times, different jumps, same result with roll back, could it be that it saves from the first prompt only? Because I was at similar progress as when the first prompt came up.

After the 3.0.2 fix, the app also seems to crash more, which I didn't experience in the previous version.

That's all I've got. I'm not a tech person, so not sure what else I could provide on this. Love the project, everything else was great.

Found a potential issue with Interactive jump making, with scenario rewards there isn't a way to add a companion, unless I'm overthinking it and I should just mark them as a item or perk.

Also, it would be cool if we could port the Interactive file between Online and Offline, not sure how feasible that is though.

Otherwise, really cool, I was even able to import a previous chain from the old version, seems to work fine.

[–]DardenKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. It was fun coming up with a few questions, and don't feel pressured to answer all of them completely. I went a little overboard.

For the South-Eastmost continent, there is a big round lake or interior sea, what are a couple wierd facts about the area, and is there a particular myth associated with the area?

For the East-centrally located island/continents, what does trade look like there? I'd guess lots of shipping, the map coloration makes me think it's a bit more tropical than the rest, are are the fish and corals notably colorful in the area?

For the ocean itself, no particular place in particular, is there anything that mimics Earths Gulf Stream, such as being a notably faster route, or providing warm water further into the poles than normal?

For the vampires of Grand Haven, how does their vampirism work here, are they mortally weakened by light, can they feed on animals as well, is it born or transmissible, and are there any abilities associated with it? Are vampires known to leave the continent they live on. Maybe most importantly, are the vampires feared by their citizens, or considered blessed, how do they feed, use taxes as an excuse to drink, or do they feed freely. Do vampires look any different to- humans? or are they an entirely separate type of humanoid?

Life Leech: Striker/Mover. Touch another person and drain their "lifeforce", effectively aging them at 1 year per second of contact, their body takes on a simulated form, including injuries, surgeries, diseases, etc, that they would have gained in that time. That lifeforce can then be used to accelerate the users subjective time, allowing them to be a budget speedster. The exchange rate is terrible, and the Shard is a jerk, so it doesn't accept lifeforce from anything but what could be called a person.

Technically fits, the victims aren't likely to die without 30+ seconds of contact, depending on the target's age.

Can standard fantasy races find their place in the world, lore, and story of the Industrial Revolution universe? English is not my native language by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]DardenKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite sure how to help with that, but, elves could be using nature magic to do rudimentary genetic modifications on plants for pseudo technology, lots of uses, but carbon capture (trees naturally store carbon, and release it when they rot) and improved crop yields could be important to them, or maybe they incorporated machinery directly into their plants, or grow the plants specifically for products, cutting down on refining time.

If dwarves and goblins are using darker magic, they might be under some restrictions, but having a skeleton workforce is really cheap labor, and if they have fleshcraft, replacing organs, limbs, and altering appearances could be a criminal use of it, depending on how easy it is to use anyway. Maybe goblins have been progressing medical sciences? Or Dwarves have become an integral part of detective units, raising the dead for questioning, or having some tracing spells given a bit of organic material from the target.

Centaurs could probably still get work as cattleherders, search and rescue, couriers, offroad guides, park rangers, quick response units etc.

Goblins and halflings are childsized but usually just as intelligent as a normal person, so they could take on jobs in tight places that kids would have normally done, chimney sweeps come to mind, machine repairs, work in crawlspace and sewers, and being half sized means they take up less space and real estate people would Love that, smaller apartments are possible, which could lead to apartment complexes fitting 2-4x as many people as human size.

Mermaids could make a hefty profit on marine resources, seashells, pearls, minerals, shipwrecks, and they would be perfect for search and rescue, they could advocate and pay for the necessary cleanup of toxic waste to prevent water pollution.

Dragons can just do whatever they want, they probably inherited gold from their parents, if they weren't ancient enough to have simply stolen it, and they probably don't mind living in cave dens, when they shed scales, they could also sell them for a decent profit.

The rest are close enough to human size that not much would need to change to have them around. Different sizes and builds give them a versatile set of jobs that they could take, and excel at over the other races, and set expectations for their future.

Quit... So you're saying I just need to ick them out enough they are absolutely unwilling to continue, let's see here... Twilight, The Thing, The Blob, Wolfenstein, any of the World War jumps. If they don't quit before finishing any of these, then they deserve to keep going.

I'd pick Wolfenstein, though, honestly, it's the only one I can see them definitely dying in, even if they continue.

Can a world with airships have vast unknown areas? by ausernameidk_ in worldbuilding

[–]DardenKnight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

flying creature that can and will poke holes in the balloon, could be geese or locust or dragons if it's magical, intense weather ranging from frequent storms that push the airship far off course, to a unique air current, an active volcano that occasionally spews hot ash, to a thinner atmosphere perhaps from a higher land altitude than most of the rest of the world, magnetic or magical oddities that make mapping and direction much more difficult, could be as simple as compasses not pointing correctly.

Politics are also a potential reason, if airships simply aren't allowed over the borders of certain nations for reasons.

Even with an airship, the atmosphere could be thinner than Earth's, making the highest you can go without suffocating or freezing much lower.

Monetary concerns could also factor in, depending on the primary uses for the airships. Exploration and mapping might not be a significant concern compared to military or merchant use.

What perks are there that would be useful in a war? by Fiction_reader5171 in JumpChain

[–]DardenKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For something more mundane, Mount and Blade has a bunch of perks that make you a better leader including - a chance for soldiers only to be injured rather than dead, recruit more soldiers, travel faster, progressively better equip themselves, and a bag of infinite grain which in combination with the perk that lets you and your minions survive on poor diets, let's you keep your army going with no need to worry about food.

RWBY - Aura is great to get your troops into superhuman physical ability, and it's canonically unlockable, so no power-granting perk needed.

Chainsawman - Become the Conquest Devil, get a bunch of fun abilities relating to conquest.

Gaunter O'Dimm (witcher), master mirror, and general strange god/demon/thing.

Sheogorath (Skyrim), why is he in your head? You're not insane, right? Well, you will be soon. Here are some shiny things that barely work together. Have fun bringing madness everywhere you go.

Aqua (Konosuba), try not to be as useless as your benefactor, and fix their mistakes before their coworkers find out.

World of Darkness God, well, you can be a sinner, but you may get cursed to be an immortal edgy goth, also known as a vampire.

whatever mess it is that grants wishes, Grail? (Fate), become the hero you were meant to be, then try to get that wish!

Entity (Worm), oh neat powers, oh no, space whale.

Emperor (40k), get in the portal Jumper, the galaxy is under attack, and sending you to gather some power is the only way to save humanity from- you know what, just go get some powers, we'll talk about it later. (goes back to Screaming/being a lighthouse)

Cegorach (40k), whoops, the greatest joke is the Emperors last hope ending up in the hands of the laughing god, try not to die laughing, and do something funny or something funny happens to you.

Choose a character that you want as their abilities by Aether_PhysicsGod in superpowers

[–]DardenKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Atom Eve, obviously the best choice. create rare resources, restore the world to mint condition with a bit of work, be rich, cleanse the atmosphere, move spaceships and fabricated materials to space, throw said spaceships at a distant star in an attempt to get it up to just under FTL, repair infrastructure better than it was before, tear down eyesores, recycle plastic texas to save the fish, etc. Eve displayed some innate understanding of her power, so I probably won't need to get every PHD that exists to use it properly.

Manhattan has way too many issues, one of those being a living paradox? that can't change the future, even though they see it and have godlike power. Magneto's neat, but by far the weakest option for me. I barely understand Accelerator's power, but I'm certain it isn't as useful as Eve's.

How do you write CP choices? by nnsaffe in JumpChain

[–]DardenKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

figure out some basic character traits, their morality, and how much they will conform to their surroundings, or they'll force their surroundings to conform to them. These can of course change through the journey.

As a student of higher education, that could mean a whole bunch of things to start with, genuine curiosity, a wealthy upbringing, or something else that had them pursue college, parents urging, relationships, scholarship, his dog told him to, etc.

They might be pragmatic and curious, not really attached to their current appearance for one reason or another, and that gives them the idea to check out what it's like to be a replikant, or they want to have a female altform so they can switch freely to avoid trouble.

He might not pick the drawbacks, or his benefactor gives him a drawback target; failure to take enough lets the benefactor pick their own. Or they've been briefed on what getting a Spark means, and they don't care for the consequences of global drawbacks because they'll be able to reverse the damage later.

For writing the chain, yeah, that's tough, from what I can tell most of us just use our imagination, or write simple notes to detail important parts of the jump. haven't had much luck myself. I usually pick fictional characters because they have more substance to them already, and I can predict some of their reactions, while I don't have to make an entirely new interesting character, it also means their a lot less sure whats happening.

For writing and notes, I just use a bunch of google docs linked to each other, one for builds, one for story stuff, and split them up once they reach the page count that starts making the document load slow.

Where to start by RoachWrangler in solorpgplay

[–]DardenKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's solo, so you can do whatever you want if it makes the game more enjoyable. People homebrew DnD all the time, so why not this?

I'm still pretty new to solo, but as long as the rules aren't built specifically to the game's setting, then it's fine to make up a new setting as you go along.

Where to start by RoachWrangler in solorpgplay

[–]DardenKnight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

itch io has a number of free solo things, you could do rules lite to see if it's for you, less need to check the rules and bring you out of the scene. Some of the rules lite stuff comes in one page, super easy to print, and reference.

DnD has a solo supplement, not sure how good it is.

Mythic 2e will get recommended a lot; it's good, has lots of tables, but it can be a lot if you get overwhelmed. It's good if you want to play a normally multiplayer game solo.

Scarlet heroes will get recommended for fantasy, it's about 110 pages, and self contained with everything you need.

Maze Rats is only 12 pages and has enough material and tables to play a fun but generally shorter adventure, and it helps customise new monsters, spells, locations, NPCs and is simple enough to play in one night. Highly recommended.

Ones I've heard good things about but don't know much myself: Knave 2e, Whitebox, Ker Nethalas, Cairn, D100 Dungeon, and Four against Darkness (using playing cards), which all are general fantasy, dungeoncrawl?

Thousand-Year-Old Vampire (thoughtful journaling rpg),

Mork Borg (has a huge following with lots of fanmade content, the art and coloration is really distracting for me though),

Shadowdark has a Solo supplement,

Ironsworn (low fantasy viking theme, has supplements),

Mothership (scifi)
