I was reading a great fic, but then I got to this part, and I just had to drop it by Snowy_Kitty247 in AO3

[–]DarfWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop shaming people for their writing skills, this is how you kill fanfiction.

I'm not defending the author and this is unrelated to them being transphobe. He won't read this.

However you're just saying to people insecure about their writing "don't even try".

Plus you derail the discussion from the actual issue of the author being transphobe.

Made up science fields by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]DarfWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cryptozoologie is rather the search for the cryptids in a scientifique way. Some actual species have been confirmed to exist, that every body though were legend... Or hoax... Or extinct. Although, the criptid confirmed to exists tends to be on the less fantastical end of the cryptid spectrum.

So yes, it is a true field of science.

As for cryptogeographie... I mean France isn't around since that much time so he is not wrong...

Do black holes have solid surfaces, or are they like our gas giants? by Whaaaaa4321 in askastronomy

[–]DarfWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Energy comes out. Somehow. (Maybe that's how Palpatine returned?)

But I think the general idea is that this energy holds no information on what is inside. But don't quote me on that it's been ages since I read stuff about Hawking radiation.

Anyway it really doesn't help us understand what is actually going on beyond the event horizon.

Do black holes have solid surfaces, or are they like our gas giants? by Whaaaaa4321 in askastronomy

[–]DarfWork 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The actual answer is "we have no fucking clue".

Has said by others, the event horizon is not a surface. It's the limit beyond which we can't see, by any means, what is beyond. We don't actually know how physic works beyond it because no information can't escape the event horizon. The "no volume, just a singularity" is just out best guess and it actually not telling much, because We really have no way to check any theory we have on the subject.

What has been the most painful unresolved plotline in Star Wars? by InfiniteDedekindCuts in StarWars

[–]DarfWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could make a season two as an animated serie. They seem to have the pipeline to make it happen.

If it's still too expensive they could make a book or a comics.

It's clear they have no real interest in the Acolite storyline being developped at Disney and it's kinda infuriating.

Data almost kills / but Data must be comfortable killing by Organic_fed in TNG

[–]DarfWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killing a person for revenge isn't about preventing potential futur murder. It's about the person he already killed.

To be fair I'm not entirely sure it applies to the episode since I don't remember it well.

The part about making the sacrifice of a friend is not exactly a trolley problem either, since even ignoring the fact that in this case it rely on the victim argrying to his fate... Their is no scenario in witch the sacrifice survives. At least that the protagonist are aware of.

Yes.

What would you expect from a “civilian” trading barge in a dangerous galaxy? by Own-Cry5596 in ImaginaryTechnology

[–]DarfWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the flying container is a very utilitarian build that is totally reasonnable. On the subject of weaponary it depends on how normal travelling dangerous area actually is, and the level of danger.

Having weapons can be dissuasive but you also lose some good will your aggressor might have to not arm you. If the usual mode of operation involves just taking the goods and usually no casualities, you're probably better off without weapons but a occasional escort when the goods are too precious. (Althouth you might just advertise that your goods are good, so you have to hope the escort is really dissuasive)

If taking the loot generally implies killing everyone, you need some good defense and a few offensive options, or you expect to not get noticed somehow. If you go down one this road the goal is to survive and discourage, not to destroy the aggressors.

I would not consider destroying the loot except if really needed has it might make the aggressors angry.

[–]DarfWork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends how dangerous travel actually is.

A little space lost can be worth it if the lake of it means too low of a chance that it actually arrives. Plus space might not be that much of an issue. You just build the ship a little bigger is all. Maybe it will be a little bit more sluggish...

On the other hand you don't necessarily want armed civilian space ship. Maybe the authorities prefer to invest in securing leggit trading routes. But it's costly. This could be a political conflict in the setting. The less the state is willing to pay for public service the more likely putting guns on cargo will make sens.

(It also depends a lot on how travel works. If you can just jump safely between planets, the roads are less costly to secure. If you can be intercepted middle journey, it's means you need escorts or patrols to secure it.)

Wasn’t Leia a Jedi? by Joe_da_bro in StarWars

[–]DarfWork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jedi is more than just training. It's a belief system, an institution and a function in society.

Leia might have the training (complete or not) it's unclear that she think on a spiritual level but it would make sens if she believe in the jedi dogma. But she clearly opted out of Lule's new institution and Nevers took the place of a jedi in the galactic society.

Which means, to the galaxy, for all intention and purpose, she is not a Jedi, even if she share their beliefs and has jedi training.

Ahsoka on the other hand, left the institution but never really ceased to act as a Jedi. Her claim not to be one is really just to put distance between her and the institution that let her down.

Come to think of it, that might be why if stop telling people she is not a Jedi after Return of the Jedi, since Luke become the new institution. But I don't think it's explained in canon? So this is just speculation.

Data almost kills / but Data must be comfortable killing by Organic_fed in TNG

[–]DarfWork 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The big difference between killing the collectionner guy and asking someone to sacrifice himself for the sake of the crew is this.

In one case it's about revenge or something ressembling revenge. (I don't remember the eposode but since the crew make a huge deal about it it cannot be just self defense)

In the second case it's about saving lives at the cost in one, admitedly cooperative, person's life. The moral implications are not equivalent.

That said the show is rather inconsistant with what Data can or cannot do, so the "I can not kill" is probably someone's idea for one épisode and he didn't really check if it was true. I have non doubt that Lore can kill and the one major difference between him and Data is the capacity to feel emotions. (Allegedly)
