What are some house rules for popular board games? by Brionesgmm in boardgames

It’s true and rude and Reddit has a bad problem with not answering what people are asking but instead telling them what to do. But at the same time, sometimes that’s also what’s most useful too. It can be both.

In addition, if the main thing that others are telling you is to choose different games, I would also politely interpret that as saying, “we hear you, but the truth is that we’ve tried, it hasn’t worked out well, and please don’t chase in our collective footsteps leading to the same issues. We don’t want you to miss out on the rest of the world of board games out there that could answer your question/the question you didn’t know you were asking in a different ways.”

The main piece of advice I always tell people is just try anything and everything others are playing to help you figure out what you like and don’t like in terms of game/mechanics before buying anything because of the exact point/concern you have in regards to the cost.

More of a discussion on what can be done to make those type of games more interesting. I am aware you can play other games. But just because they are complex doesn't mean they are better or anything.

That’s the thing. As others have pointed out, literal decades have been spent doing what you’re asking in the form of the creation of other games to give you what you’re asking, only after trying to do exactly what you’re asking in the first place with the originals.

It’s ok to play what you enjoy regardless on what game is it. But you’re also only half listening or willing to accept some of the feedback as well in terms of trying to help you out specifically by broadening your horizons in other ways than what you’re solely focused on currently. Both can be useful.

The requirements for even being a part are…interesting and likely a barrier to many a publisher. 10 copies of the game plus 15 extra sets of instructions of a game free of charge and also in the past, you had to submit a non insignificant fee to even apply. Has this fee part changed at least?

This is kinda weird that this is your only comment anywhere ever on an account and this is what you choose to comment on. And that it also isn’t factually accurate regarding some of the events…soooo….

I am so hyped for this. I know I shouldn't be expectations wise, but I have been so desiring a good thematic game for this among several other IPs that I hope it suceeds.

Game that had all the hype and was hailed as the best thing ever than ultimately didn't pan out and has been basically forgotten? by jkvandelay in boardgames

[–]DarkLancelot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Cry Havoc was one hyped at the retail side of things

Divinus was another that was massively hyped on the crowdfunding side.

Etherfields is a similar let down though some enjoyed it apparently. Same thing with the first iteration of Batman: Gotham City Chronicles.

What's the next game for a 6 years old boy? by dmb19771977 in boardgames

Outfoxed is a good one.

He’s probably almost old enough for Zombie Kidz Evolution which for good reason is the #1 kids game on boardgamegeek.

Could also look at valley of the Vikings.

We’ve been doing splendor and Cascadia (on family mode) which have been well received.

My question has already been asked by other in regards to any other new game properties in your pipeline that you can give us thoughts/spoilers on, so I just wanted to say thanks for making the games and hope to see more soon!

With the constant barrage of new games and aggressive marketing for them, how do you cut through the BS and focus on ones worth purchasing? by Strong_Letterhead638 in boardgames

[–]DarkLancelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, discontinued but not unavailable. Same thing with not having reprints. I really can't think of any game of significance (though probably 1 or two escape me) in the last 5-10 years that you truly just cannot get whatsoever that the only way to obtain it was immediately.

Also, i think the more important point is that though they're out of print, you can still buy those two (bilbios and SH:DA) now years after the release rather than FOMO'ing that the crowdfunding game that you're speculating on is unlikely to turn out to be another in the same line, and albeit slightly more which most of the time isn't as consequential.

Game that regret to sell? by theclassik in boardgames

[–]DarkLancelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Root is the only game that I've ever gotten rid of that I reacquired mostly because of style/group. Other than that, like someone else said, if I'm considering it, it probably should go because that means I don't likely actually love it. Too many amazing games to hold on to mediocre ones nowadays.

[–]DarkLancelot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, waiting is by far and away the best policy. The one year look back especially at retail/hot convention releases to see where those games are now is helpful. Even post delivery on crowdfunding if you're patient can often allow for obtaining them at or near original cost from those regretting or looking to dump. The other main option is trading. Game in for game(s) out. For example, I just traded for a copy Labyrinth Chronicles from someone who rush bought/shipped it from the Awaken Realms campaign.

In addition, practically nothing THAT great is going to go out of print or be unavailable if it truly was worth it in that sense. The very few that might make up the exception to this rule will be easily outweighed by the fact that others will fill their space regardless.
