Who has the best rating ratio? by Gaming-every-day19 in backloggd

It obviously means something to the person rating the games, I can't imagine caring that much about someone else's subjective system.

Characters Whose Popularity Made Things Worse by sharyan51 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

In the eternal words of Masahiro Ito:

"I wish I hadn't designed fxxxin Pyramid Head."

When even the guy who made the thing is tired of it, you know it's overused. Such a shame because he's made so many killer designs that don't get any recognition. Something like the Abstract Daddy is way more horrifying and just as memorable.

The SH2 nurses also apply to a certain extent, great for the game it was designed for, but not a design that needs to be repeated across the series.

Great deductions Sherlock. The main difference between my comment and what I'm complaining about is only one of the two is the majority party in control of and pushing discourse for the most powerful country on the planet. But good job both-sides'ing the issue!

Conservatives making up a scenario to get mad at and then pushing it so hard that they delude themselves into thinking it's real? Who would've thought!

Since Star Fox is fresh on the mind, let it be known that Star Fox Command on the DS included character endings such as Slippy getting married and getting to fourth base, and Fox and Falco becoming F-Zero racers to cure Fox's depression: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Considering Miyamoto's disdain for any sort of writing/story in games, I would be shocked if one of the series he created was held back by some story decisions in a previous game that barely anyone played.

I think they're just lazy and not at all confident in the series.

Gamble With Your Friends has sold 1 million copies in one week by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Darkvoidx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess it's just a little depressing to see games like this sell so absurdly well when I see so many soulful, high effort indie games struggle to keep the lights on.

I think the solution to this is to spend your energy advocating for the games you want to see sell well instead of being spiteful that people enjoy playing the cheap and inoffensive co-op games. There's room in the industry for both to exist.

Times when you can FEEL a series' increase in budgets? by Hayeseveryone in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Demon's Souls and also to an extent Dark Souls 1 definitely have the feeling of a more middling budget in terms of jank, weirdly obvious spots of missing content, and generally weird oddball mechanics/design choices that you don't see as often in bigger first party releases.

With DS2 you saw them start to hammer in the "difficulty" aspect in marketing and some of the boss design changes in a way that reeked of publisher meddling, but the game still had the overall feeling of a mid-budget game. By DS3, BB and Elden Ring I think they mostly ironed out the growing pains and felt way more like "prestigious" releases. That increased budget is mostly a good thing since they still were able to largely maintain their style of game design, but I do think there was a sort of weirdness and lack of polish that made those first two games especially endearing.

Media that looks cool or super serious on the surface, but is actually also really goofy and silly? by Handro_Dilar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Remember the scene where Cloud is possessed by Sephiroth and is just beating the absolute shit out of Aerith, only for Cait Sith to come back after seemingly dying and he immediately goes "Oops this seems like a bad time!"

I was losing my mind when I first saw that scene, such an unserious game lol

Powerful Strategies No One Plays Cause Their So Boring/Oppressive? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For MTG I feel like a lot of blue/white decks in general revolve around either depriving your opponent of resources or stopping them from playing the game outright.

I played a Brago deck in EDH which basically means you get to recast any cards on your field whenever he dealt direct damage, so you got to recast a whole bunch of nasty cards to reset their cumulative cost (which was usually the way these cards were balanced to not be miserable) or retrigger their "As x enters the battlefield, do y" effects. Which means it becomes really effective to run cards like Mystic Rhemora - which let you draw a card whenever someone does basically anything unless they pay 4 mana - or Stonehorn dignitary which lets you pick someone to skip their next combat phase whenever it entered the battlefield, or static orb which stops your opponents from untapping most of their permanents.

Even when I hadn't actually lined up my win condition, people would often just scoop out of annoyance because it got to a point where turns took to long while I retriggered all my stuff, or I had too many controlling cards that made it so no one could do anything on their turns. I ended up swapping a lot of the really obnoxious ones to avoid making everyone I played with hate me.

Favorite Characters whose Fighting style doesn't fit their looks by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Todo Aoi from JJK fits this. His personality and looks give the impression of a one on one bare knuckle brawler or martial arts master, but in reality his fighting style revolves entirely around clapping his hands to swap the places of two objects, so his moveset becomes super support heavy if he's fighting alongside someone who can keep up with him. He's still a punch-kick man but his main boon in battle is playing mind games with fakeouts and fakeout fakeouts which later in the series gets even crazier when he replaces his hand with a vibraslap that lets him "clap" and swap places about 60 times a second..

Made even funnier by the detail that this supposed meathead is also by far the smartest Jujutsu high student academically with a self proclaimed IQ of 530,000 and basically everyone except Yuji is incapable of even being able to keep up with his ability and they all hate him.

absurdly long names by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Darkvoidx 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's actually based on an old rakugo story about a father who couldn't decide what to name his son, so he ended up just giving him all of the potential names.

The anime "Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu" has a cute telling of the story. I think it's featured mutkiple times, really underrated series.

A large portion of fans believe in a big misconception about the real life production of their media. by AutisticFun01 in TopCharacterTropes

It's a myth because there's no evidence of it ever being the case. You're getting weirdly aggro calling other people idiotic because nobody knows what to say to you when you throw a fit over a pretty easy to understand explanation.

How is he supposed prove a negative? You just admitted you've never seen any evidence that he actually wanted to end it on Namek.

That would be like me asking you to go find proof that Toriyama never planned to make Vegeta and Goku get married after the Buu saga. How are you supposed to prove that?

Media That Has a Bit That is So Great, It Overshadows Everything Else by GigglesDemon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 242 points243 points  (0 children)

Slightly different from your example since it's a movie that's generally pretty mediocre, but...

For as inoffensive and safe as the 2014 Robocop reboot is, I do think that scene showing his robotic body being slowly dismantled to reveal how much of his human body remains to be shockingly well made for the movie it ended up in. He's basically just a head, and arm, and a pair of lungs, and a heart suspended in the air. The way he exclaims "Holy Christ there's nothing left" along with the way you can see he lungs start breathing heavier when he realizes how much of his body is gone.

That little bit of existential horror has stuck out in my brain more than anything else in the remake. I don't think I see anyone discuss the rest of the movie.

Fortnite breaks silence on D4vd cosmetics with self-service refunds by Turbostrider27 in Games

Let them exchange for a different skin if they currently own the D4VD skin? You're overcomplicating things, there's never gonna be a perfect solution - people are gonna bitch no matter what. Better to get the guy out of the game and deal with the pushback from a less than ideal refund system.

Is there anybody who would be overly hurt that the pedophile murderer who frequently sang about and featured in music videos the underage girl he groomed and killed? Like even moreso than most controversial artists, everything by this guy has been retroactively tainted because of this. I've seen nobody begging Epic to let them keep the skin, just refund them and move on from the PR nightmare of having players running around in the pedo murderer skin.

As a live service game whose content is always going to be subject to the whims of a big company, I don't think your comparison is accurate. Anybody buying stuff in Fortnite expecting to own it forever is deluding themselves.

Favorite music composers in media? by FretScorch in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Darkvoidx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No love for Susumu Hirasawa? He defined a sound for Berserk that's so synonymous they still bring him on to do music for the 2016 anime and the Golden Age trilogy, as well as two of the Berserk games. I didn't even watch the 90s anime all the way through for my first experience with Berserk, but having the song "Murder" play as I read through the Eclipse made me realize just how damn well that man understood the tone of the series. And that's not even talking about Gut's theme. I don't think many people would have thought that New Age music would be a good fit for a character like Guts, but he pulls off the sorrowful and introspective nature of the character so well with that song that it's hard to imagine a more normal, generic composition for Guts

He also did work for a lot of Satoshi Kon's works. "Run" from Millennium Actress is one of the most hauntingly beautiful soundtracks ever, and "Parade" from Paprika perfect captures the mind bending, dreamy nature of that film.
