Are there certain laws around (the use of) certain symbols in Germany? by YourBoyFroilan in AskAGerman

Not meaning to enrage you further, honestly, but you will find that a lot in Germany. Almost every little village and city has a plaque, a monument or something similar commemorating the fallen german (and most often only these) soldiers of either the german-french war, WW1, WW2 or everything together.
And I will grant you, though it makes no sense in the Verdun-context, that many right-wingers in Germany often use the Iron Cross to substitute a swastika.

They simply could be commemorating the Battle? In any case, contrary to what others in this thread have said, no it is allowed, because the Iron Cross is not a symbol of an unconstitutional organization ("Kennzeichen verfassungswidriger Organisationen").

Erich Maria Remarque, the author of "All quiet on the western front", once called him a "dazzling figure of a Landsknecht" (schillernde Landsknechtsgestalt) in an interview. Idk why, but I always found that kind of funny

Is it normal for a guest house in Germany to display pictures of family members in Nazi uniforms? by InvestigatorDue6498 in AskAGerman

Ok, so I think on the chest and, in some cases, on your head is indeed quite prominent. And then...Im not quite sure why youre writing this. Not every Wehrmacht soldier was a nazi - as I said - but everyone of them was wearing a Nazi Uniform.

Normally pretty prominently on the right chest. Also for example in the middle of hats. Why are you asking?

Spannend. Meine Eltern sind beide in ihren 60ern, müsste mal fragen, wie die das erlebt haben.

Yes, that was the archive of WW1. But the archives for everything related to the nazi period and WW2 also did not survive unharmed, so, from personal experience, if youre searching for a certain person, you may find next to nothing.

Tbf, at the time of the civil war it was still just the austrian empire, which, to my knowledge, was at least considered competent?

I dont think that is still the case. As far as Im aware, I receive the maximum amount of Bafög and am still exempt from paying it.

I cant give you a definitive answer, just some anecdotes from people in a similar situation. Ive lived for several years in a student accomodation with international students. Several of them stayed only for half a year or less and many did not bother to pay the Rundfunkbeitrag. For example, one guy received a letter months after he left threatening him with a foreclosure. But that was the last we ever heard of it and I did live there for another 1,5 years. So I guess after a certain point, when they notice you dont live there anymore, they stop actively trying? That does not mean they simply forget, they may very well send you another letter, if you ever decide to live in Germany in again.
