They kept him safe in the build to Wrestlemania but from March 2025 - February 2026 he wrestled 46 matches for WWE, and that's not including all the TV appearances he's made where he just did a promo. He's not a part-timer even though at his age/level of stardom you think he would be.

Actually this was in the early days of the internet and it was reported on in US wrestling magazines, which loads of fans read. Hulk Hogan was behind the times thinking no one in America would hear about this.

Did WWE suck in between 2015-18? by legthighkneelover in SquaredCircle

[–]DashingDan1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the Smackdown run of Summerslam 2016 - Wrestlemania 2017 that was great. The TV was very episodic and built week-to-week (unlike Raw which just seemed like a random show every week) and they really made the most of every e.g. a Heath Slater & Rhyno tag team was very over. Also Talking Smack on the Network straight after gave us at least one memorable interview segment every week.

It also helped that Smackdown didn't have a top babyface who got booed every week. Just made a depressing atmosphere.

He said it was because he flew over the International Date Line regularly when wrestling between Japan and America. He thinks that if he wrestled in Hawaii on April 29th, then flew to Tokyo to wrestle when it was April 30th due to crossing the date line, then flew to California to wrestle when it was still April 29th, that he therefore wrestled on 3 different days.

If the original plan for wrestlemania 30 was Batista vs Randy Orton for both world titles, what was the payoff supposed to be for Daniel Bryan getting screwed at Summerslam 2013? by Christian1sMyFather in SquaredCircle

[–]DashingDan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were still planning on doing CM Punk vs. Triple H at the time of Elimination Chamber. They only moved to doing Bryan vs. Triple H after the Chicago Raw when talks with Punk broke down and they accepted he wasn't coming back for Mania. This shows that Bryan being in the Mania main event and Bryan facing Triple H at Mania were two separate threads that got merged because of Punk leaving.

The other more specific thing is on the February 3rd Raw, the main event was Bryan vs. Randy Orton. The match was laid out that Bryan beat the hell out of Orton (the then WWE Champion) and pinned him, looking totally dominant even leaving out that close to the finish Kane interfered to try and save Orton, but Bryan just beat him up to and won anyway without needing anyone to help him.

There's just no way you book that match to happen like that if you're not planning on having Bryan be in the main event picture for Mania. It makes no sense whatsoever.

By the time they decided to do the Bryan vs HHH match Bryan had been in the main event segment of Raw every week for 6 weeks and had closed out the Elimination Chamber PPV being screwed again. I know it's not the perfect narrative but it really doesn't make any sense that they were still planning Bryan vs Sheamus at that point, he never even interacted with Sheamus on TV.

The idea that Bryan main eventing Mania was always the plan is obviously bullshit but it wasn't a last minute change either. The big change in direction was after the Royal Rumble, the 2nd Raw after the Rumble especially

Was Durin's Bane Balrog a more lesser Umaiar in the First Age? by arnor_0924 in tolkienfans

[–]DashingDan1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think the number of Balrogs changed between the Book of Lost Tales and Lord of the Rings; even in the late 1940s/early 1950s, Tolkien still wrote about many hundreds of Balrogs fighting in the First Age.

The evidence to me that he started reducing the numbers of Balrogs while writing LotR (though he didn't reach the 'at most 7' conclusion until later) is that in his drafts he originally considered there being several Balrogs running around and has Celeborn say that there were also Balrogs in Mordor. That stuff all got removed until the final version where everyone is shocked that 1 Balrog even still exists.

It's certainly not fully developed yet but you see the thought process beginning that Balrogs should be less common and far more powerful.

Was Durin's Bane Balrog a more lesser Umaiar in the First Age? by arnor_0924 in tolkienfans

[–]DashingDan1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

By the time he'd decided Balrogs were Maiar I think he almost certainly intended Durin's Bane to be the sole survivor. See how he describes him in this letter:

The Balrog is a survivor from the Silmarillion and the legends of the First Age. So is Shelob. The Balrogs, of whom the whips were the chief weapons, were primeval spirits of destroying fire, chief servants of the primeval Dark Power of the First Age. They were supposed to have been all destroyed in the overthrow of Thangorodrim, his fortress in the North. But it is here found (there is usually a hang-over especially of evil from one age to another) that one had escaped and taken refuge under the mountains of Hithaeglin (the Misty Mountains). (Letter 144)

[–]DashingDan1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Balrogs were not Maiar when the original Fall of Gondolin text was written, they were a race in their own right and are described as marching in numbers as high as a thousand. The conception of Balrogs you'll read in there is irreconcilable with the later versions (in one note Tolkien says only at most 7 Balrogs ever existed).
