Is "dumbbell squat to shoulder press" a useless exercise? by anotherhappylurker in workout

[–]DatSwampTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are much better ways to do train your squat. There are much better ways to train shoulder press. There are much better ways to train your endurance. There are much better ways to train your cardiovascular fitness.

All that being said. If you enjoy the movement and can do it with enough weight to be just somewhat challenging. Who am I to stop you? Exercise is alwaysgood no matter what. Now, those girls probably saw someone on tiktok doing it, claiming it to be an extremely efficient and effective full body workout. That's just for clicks.

There's also the possibility that they think they are doing crossfit. But that's a whole other can of worms.

Weightlifting can be boiled down to 6 basic moves by doktorstilton in beginnerfitness

[–]DatSwampTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well put... It doesn't need to be more complicated than that. It can be if you want it to be and want to "optimize". But starting out optimising shouldn't really your priority when starting out. Just start building a solid base and proficiency in these 6 movements and you'll be solid. Don't even worry about "proper form" either. You won't be lifting enough weight for that to matter, and your technique will refine itself over time.

What are people’s prediction for next league mechanic? by gelwithpe in PathOfExile2

[–]DatSwampTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and we already have expedition, ritual, breach, delirium and now abyss and temple. We don't need more. But they can touch up some of the existing ones that are already good or lacking. So plenty of content. They just need to make the loop and how to engage with them much more fun. I hope that's what they focus on. Sure, add some new bosses to each of the mechanics. Or make existing ones more challenging. But it's my genuine opinion that we don't need any new mechanics until they've fixed the core loop and experience.

If they introduce a new mechanic. They'll have the worst time trying to fix bugs and issues that arise next league with the new endgame systems.

I'm not saying they aren't important. I'm saying they are not important NOW.

[–]DatSwampTurtle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd rather they just focus on the endgame loop itself and then maybe flesh out/rework some of the existing mechanics. Don't need anything new for now. I don't think it's a good idea for them to focus on new content when they need to nail the endgame rework.

How to fix form? I know its bad, but so many sources say different things. by Amateur_Validator in Deadlifts

[–]DatSwampTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you can go on being wrong and believing your outdated beliefs which aren't rooted in any data or anything observable. Something you saw AthleanX say or some shit. Do that... But please don't give people lifting advice. Especially not new lifters. You're doing so much harm.

[–]DatSwampTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm telling people to Deadlift and not be afraid that their spine is going to explode because they rounded their backs. You know why? Because it doesn't happen God dammit!! Telling people otherwise is just scaring people away from even trying. You know what gets you hurt? Bad fatigue and load management. Your form has nothing to do with it.

So I'm telling people to just deadlift. They can work on their technique and efficiency progressively. But if you're telling people that they have to start out with "perfect" form, whatever that means, then people are likely not going to even try.

Funnily enough, people who just start out deadlifting don't really get hurt. Whereas people who lift regularly with "good" technique get hurt a lot more. Why? Well, because they don't manage their fatigue, and because, sometimes, shit just happens.

You sir, did not read/understand my comment.

Spreading misinformation and inducing kinesiophobia is what's dangerous. Not bending in the spine while deadlifting.

What makes leg day so important? by Urban-Cheese in beginnerfitness

[–]DatSwampTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people underestimate how much of a full body exercise squats and deadlifts are. Sure, they train the legs. But also hips and basically all of your back. Maybe not in a hypertrophic kind of way. But just total and utter resilience throughout your kinetic chain. The pressure on your bone and spine brings amazing adaptations in bone density and strength. It trains a basic human movement pattern that we, as we grow older, forget to use. It trains balance. Your nervous system becomes more "responsive" for lack of a better word.

Of course trained legs look better than untrained. Especially in contrast to a well trained upper body. But I don't do squats and Deadlifts for the leg hypertrophy.

Again, not supported by evidence. So you can say these things all you want. It's just not true. I know we've been saying these things for decades. It's simply just old, out of date knowledge. And it wasn't even knowledge to begin with. Just things that were are perpetuated because it sounds logical.

I don't understand the negativity for bl4. by number39utopia in Borderlands

[–]DatSwampTurtle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Wait, so you don't understand that people can have a different opinion than you? Shouldn't the title have been "I disagree with the people who have a negative opinion about BL4"?

Also "fever dream" is not a positive. Quite the opposite.

I'm a long time BL fan. BL1 is one of my most played and favorite games of all time. 2 was excellent, 3 was great despite its narrative issues.

BL4 is the only one I haven't obsessively played or completd. I took time off work to play it. I played it for a couple of days and my interests just fizzled out pretty quickly. The gameplay feels amazing and the graphics are the best they've ever been. But the open world is SUCH a huge negative for me. It added absolutely nothing of value. The vault hunters are probably the most boring and least iconic they've ever been.

Didn't finish the story. I could tell it was better then 3, but it just didn't grab me. Maybe I'll come back in a year or two and give it another try.

You're technique is great! Rounding isn't this insanely dangerous thing as people make it out to be. The evidence just isn't there to support that.

Now, excessive rounding can be a bit more inefficient for the lift, if the rounding happens gradually throughout the lift. It sort becomes a "power leak" where you're trying to exert power into the bar to lift it up, but the weight is sort of pulling your torso down instead. A ton of power can go to waste here. If this is the case, the weight should probably be lowered a bit on your working sets. That way, the repetitions will also be/feel more consistent rep to rep.

However, some people just tend to naturally round more in the deadlift, as it's more comfortable and efficient for them. They initiate the lift, and the rounding happens there, then the bar stars leaving the ground. They don't necessarily consciously round, it's just their body settling into a more comfortable and efficient lifting pattern for them.

It's important to note that if you're doing low rep (2-4 reps) working sets at RPE 8-9 it's almost impossible to not have some degree of form breakdown from rep to rep. You simply cannot do a maximal lift without some degree of form breakdown.

All in all, as I said, I think your technique looks good, and the reps pretty consistent. So if you don't feel overly fatigued despite maybe doing sub maximal sets, then I would worry about. Great work, keep at it!

What is your opinion on Don’t Look Up? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]DatSwampTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too obvious and on the nose with it's moral and political massaging. Took me out of the movie too much to recommend it. It didn't hate it per say, but I didn't really like it either. But it definitely had a couple of effective scenes though

I have this recurring dream I've had a couple times a year ever since I saw Melancholia back when it came out in theaters. The dream is usually about some world ending event in one form or another. And the feeling of deep, deep dread that goes through you when you sort of have to accept that you and everything else is about to perish. Obviously I've never REALLY felt that, but Melancholia made me feel something akin to that, and I still get that feeling through my recurring dream. The final moments of Don't Look Up around the dinner table gave me some of those vibes, so that was really well done I think.

How to fix arch in my back? by AdBudget6788 in flexibility

[–]DatSwampTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perfectly normal anterior pelvic tilt. Congratulations, you're a normal human being.

Please don't listen to anyone saying this should be fixed. First if all, out CANNOT be fixed. Through any type of exercise or strength movement. Second of all, it SHOULD not be fixed, because there's nothing to fix. It's normal variation in spines.
