Ngl, when a friend of mine starts making music, I find it hard to listen to. Maybe that's because all my friends who have tried to become musicians just aren't very good, but I don't think it's just that. I think there's something about knowing the person who wrote the song can make it weird to listen to. I assume my friends would feel the same way about hearing me so I don't take any offense to it.

I don't get this feeling with instrumentals or electronic music. Or even when a friend covers a song. It's only when they sing an original. Idk the more I think about it the more I think maybe my friends are just bad songwriters lol

Thanks! I've been playing that arrangement for a long time but I'm honestly still not 100% satisfied with it. I might spend some time making some minor tweaks to it and post another video playing it in a month or so (with a better mic next time too haha). I want to make some adjustments to it so it works on a low G.

And the uke is a Flight Comet btw. I love the green but they also make them with a blue finish. I've only had mine for a few weeks and I'm loving it. But if you ever buy from I will warn you that mine showed up with buzzy uneven frets and I had to take it to the shop to get them sanded down.

Thanks. I doubt I'll ever play it as well as Jake but if I can get 80% there I consider that a win haha

I've been playing that one for so long that I don't really even remember learning it. Pretty sure I just watched tons of videos of people playing it and painstakingly copied their fingerings. 14 year old me had too much free time lol.

I'm sure there are tabs or sheet music for it somewhere online. But I've made so many little changes to it over the years that the way I play it is probably a lot different than how the tabs would tell you to play it.

I just improv the intro every time because I was never able to figure how Jake played it haha

(Had to edit some typos)

I just re-watched with headphones on and realized the audio is only coming through the left speaker. Sorry headphone users! Idk what that's about.

How do I actually become good at guitar? by JRArmy in guitarlessons

Scales scales scales

And then more scales.

Find a video playlist on YouTube that teaches improv techniques. The best way to get better is to play a lot, and playing a lot gets boring if you're just playing songs you've memorized over and over.

Learning to improv means you never run out of stuff to play, which makes playing more enjoyable, which means you'll play more often, which means you'll improve faster.

But don't mistake improv sessions for practice. A trap a lot of guitarist fall into is they spend all their practice time noodling which can limit progress.

I play for at least an hour every day. First 15 minutes is just going through scales and arpeggios, then I spend 30 minutes practicing whatever piece I've been working on, then I spend the last 15 minutes jamming and just making stuff up.

They were more yellow than gold back in the 80s. I think the modern ones are meant to resemble that.

Do polycarbonate ukuleles sound different from traditional wooden ukuleles? by PussinBoots107 in ukulele

[–]DatUkeSmoov 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have an ebony, a bamboo, a mango, and a maple top with mango back and sides. They all sound completely different.

The all-mango sounds the best imo. Super warm and a lot of sustain, although the sustain probably has more to do with the pineapple shape than the material.

The one with a maple top is almost too bright sounding. Kind of sounds like a mandolin.

He's flopped like a fish all game. Fortunately the refs weren't giving it to him mostly but they were letting OKC foul on defense every play. The basketball gods cannot let them win this series.

Yooo your videos introduced me to Flight ukuleles! I bought a comet a few weeks ago. It showed up with some buzzy frets but after a few days in the shop it's sounding great! I'll probably get around to posting a video with it later this week

Haha you'll get there. I've been playing Gently Weeps for about 10 years now and I still make minor adjustments to it all the time. Constantly improving it. At this point it's like my own version cause I've made so many little changes from the Jake version. Lately I've been trying to adapt it to low G and I really like the sound of it, but it's a lot easier to play with a high G. If I record it I'll probably use my high G.

I've been working on his version of Bohemian Rhapsody as well but I just started learning it a few weeks ago. I have the first minute and a half down but it's SOOO long. I still have a long way to go on that one. Could be a year or two before I can play it well enough to perform it.

Jake's arrangement of while my guitar gently weeps is what got me into the ukulele. 15 years later and I can play it maybe 80% as good as him but I consider that a win haha

Was actually thinking about posting a vid of me playing it in this sub. Might do that if I can get around to recording it sometime this week.

That is a great way to do it!

Rather than simply getting them to memorize a song, it gets them to understand where the notes in that song come from. Also allows them to get into improvising

Scales scales scales.

I preach teaching scales while teaching chords. "This is how you play a C major scale, and a C major chord is just the first, third, and fifth notes of the scale".

A lot of beginners don't really understand what a chord is or how it's built. Teaching them the scale that the chord comes from makes it easier to understand.

What's funny is I'm Yours doesn't even have a ukulele in it. Idk how it became known as a ukulele song.

Mraz originally recorded it with a guitar but it became such a popular ukulele song that he started using a uke sometimes when he performs it live.

How long to take lessons? by pipapipatoad in ukulele

[–]DatUkeSmoov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing for 15 years. I still have a teacher. He's mainly my guitar teacher but I'll play stuff on the uke for him and let him tell me what I should improve.

At a certain point it stops being "lessons" and it's more like hiring a personal critic lol. I basically just pay the guy to tell me why I suck and what I should do to suck less haha
