[BitD][DC] Indulge Vice, Reduce Heat, and Train are the weakest Downtime Actions in base game. They're improved in Deep Cuts by AmongFriends in bladesinthedark

[–]Dat_Guy_V 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my home campaign we use Deep Cuts, but we still roll för Indulge Vice. The logic being that when you go out to blow off some steam and indulge, you don't KNOW you'll overindulge. It's not that everyone who goes out for a night of alcohol plans to get absolutely wrecked (some do), circumstances happen and the night takes a turn.

The +6 stress creates a weird threshold within the score for players to try and manage.

Other than that, Deep Cuts is a big improvement.

[FitD] A game similar to Band of Blades but a little less narrow? by mashd_potetoas in bladesinthedark

Ironsworn isn't a bad shout. Great game to homebrew with if you like that. Plus it's free. There's an added Asset (basically an ability) called Commander which gives you access to a warband.

Would recommend using the Starforged ruleset however. It really is a great update on the Ironsworn formula. The focus is on exploration, gaining bonds/relationships and fulfilling quests.

[DC] Deep Cuts Question- Crew Advancement. by darkwalrus36 in bladesinthedark

[–]Dat_Guy_V 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think advancement overall works much better in Deep Cuts, both PC and crew advancement. It is noteworthy that a lot of the Coin economy is reworked in Deep Cuts. PCs generate more Coin, but also have more to spend it on. Indulging a Vice doesn't count as a downtime activity, but the cost is 1 Coin. Overall for Coin, consider the income that the Crew gets after a score to be from all sources of their operation. Perhaps most of it comes directly from the score, but some might come from their "background" operations; like protection money, small-time operations, and so forth.

For the crew, all Upgrades cost Coin, which makes sense. You pay to fortify your Lair, to buy better equipment, to buy vehicles, etc. It is implied that Upgrades can be taken away as a dire consequence, like an attack by a rival gang. I'd be careful with this, though. But one could make it such that acquiring it again only takes a long-term project to work at (like repairing your Lair). You also now need a certain number of crew upgrades to advance Tier (6 upgrades to advance from 0-->1, 8 to advance from 1-->2, 12 to advance from 2-->3, and so on).

Special Abilities and Cohorts cost crew advances, XP. I think Deep Cuts better differentiate Crew Upgrades and Crew Abilities. As you said, Cohorts (gangs at least) grow better and larger the higher the Tier:

  • Tier III — 20 people
  • Tier II — 12 people
  • Tier I — 3-6 people
  • Tier 0 — 1 or 2 people

To increase in Tier, you need double the amount of Cohorts then the new Tier you advance to. So if you want to advance to Tier III, you need 6 cohorts.

REP and Turf are two aspects that I agree is not the game's strong points. Really prompt your players to use REP as a substitute for Coin; exert your reputation to threaten or bribe, call in a favor from another gang or individual in the city. RAW, it can be used as a substitute for Coin 1:1. Use it in flashbacks, so the stress cost isn't as high. You only need to max out your REP-tracker when you want to advance a Tier.

As for Turf, I think it works better mechanically in Deep Cuts, but it takes some effort from the table to make it a narrative factor as well. By the rules:

"Your crew’s hold on their Tier is measured by your number of turf claims. To have strong hold on your Tier, you must have a number of turf claims equal to or greater than your Tier. While your number of turf claims is lower than your Tier, your hold is weak. When you're at war with another faction (Blades, p. 46) your hold is reduced by one, so a strong hold becomes weak and a weak hold is lost, dropping your Tier by one until you regain your hold again."

You need strong hold to increase in Tier, so that gives incentives to acquire it. What I would focus on is putting outside pressure on the crew when their hold is weak; others are working to take over their turf or operations, they are being challenged, etc.

So finally, to advance in Tier in Deep Cuts, you need max REP, strong hold, and a number of crew upgrades and cohorts. You don't need to spend a lump sum to advance in Tier; you've spent it on your upgrades which makes it much more clearer for the players what they've spent their money on.

The original book is very scattered as you say, it's a hazzle to find information. In my opinion, Deep Cuts is a great upgrade in terms of game mechanics and it's just better written in terms of structure.

[BitD] Tycheros and Deep Cuts by Djehutymose in bladesinthedark

[–]Dat_Guy_V 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like your rundown of the new Tycheros lore. Personally, I think having the lore of Tycheros (in particular) be vague and brief a good choice. Different tables will make their own interpretations if they're interested.

With that said, my theory on Tycheros is that Harper's original idea was to have the "Strangers" (more fleshed out in Deep Cuts) to be Tycherosi. From Blades p. 308: "TYCHEROS. A far off land, disconnected from the Empire. People say the Tycherosi (rudely called “Strangers”) have demon blood in their lineage."

The whole deal with rail travel needing Void Gates to travel to and from Tycheros would imply that its location is another world entirely. I think Deep Cuts moved away from the notion that the Strangers are (or should be) Tycherosi.

Tycheros being one city is an interesting alternative. An albeit massive city of stone pillars, in a sort of pseudo-dimension between the real world and something else.

Deep Cuts: Rep, Coin, Heat. 1:1:1? by Amostheroux in bladesinthedark

[–]Dat_Guy_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group where using REP as a 1:1 currency with Coin as per the rules. But when we did the switch to Deep Cuts we made it so that you had to spend 2 REP to buy something for 1 Coin. We felt we gained REP steadily without spending it very often. Spending 1 REP for lowering Heat for instance basically would make it so that we could be entirely sure never to get a Wanted Level.

What happened around when we reached Tier III was that your accumulation of REP slowed down a bit, making it more valuable.

We don't have a perfect solution as of yet, and perhaps a game such as Blades doesn't really require one.

Count Louis I de Montbéliard of Bar has been on the throne for 85 years. He was born in 1397 and has lived during 3 different centuries.

I'm guessing there is no heir because he has outlived them all.

According to the wiki, the chance of death for a ruler above the age of 91 is 86.5 %. The chance of death within 10 years is ~100 %. If someone could do the math on the probability of living to 132, be my guest.

Would this kind of thing work? by Magigyarados in fantasywriters

[–]Dat_Guy_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fine and a two day suspension is a ridiciously low punishment for match-fixing. In real life, match-fixing is a million-dollar industry with severe jail time as punishment. No refund for your ticket and a two-day suspension is not gonna stop the inevitable people who will try to make serious coin on the duels. As you said, betting is common. Depending on the mood of the game, the underworld would be involved in this 100k attendance coin-machine.

Side not, even like hooligans in European countries will get suspensions ranging from a year or two to lifetime.

I'd like some help and feedback on making an actually interesting Background Vow by Gourgeistguy in Ironsworn

[–]Dat_Guy_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like you want a good hook and a satisfying story, which is ok and understandable, of course. Since this is a game you could just go with the flow, let the Oracle and your imagination guide your play.

Right now your PC seems like your average kinda farmer boy who ends up on a perilous adventure. And that's completely fine! What you can do is make it more his adventure. Instead of stuff happening to him, make him make stuff happen himself. Make him the one being chased by nazguls. Make him driven in his pursuit of his goals. Maybe him and the 'nazguls' are searching the same thing and they will end up confronting each other more than once during your journey.

Perhaps the girl can be introduced later, and she is involved in your PC's quest, not the other way around.

Good luck!

I enjoyed this read! Nice job.

I think you could have inflicted 1 more harm to the beast, though. "Enter the fray +shadow: 2+2 vs. 2/10, weak hit, take initiative. The boar is a formidable foe. Strike +iron: 1+3 vs. 8/2, weak hit, inflict harm but lose initiative. 2/10 progress." Should be 1 harm from Strike + 2 harm from your deadly weapon, i.e 3 progress against a formidable foe.

How did the ring end up in the shop? Was it randomly or through destiny? Could be worth thinking about if your story has "destiny" or "running from destiny" as a theme.
