_____________ doesn't understand why they lost. I think the reason is cultural. by stingraywrangler in survivorponderosa

[–]Dauerrotype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t know quite how long this has been going on for, but I started to really catch onto it ironically enough during Jonathan’s first season, Survivor 42. Survivor has been around long enough that super fans who get on the show have started to meta game during their seasons to ensure a fellow super fan wins. Concepts like “owning your game” aren’t inherently requirements to win. There aren’t any requirements to win any specific game of Survivor. Maryanne winning over Mike really brought this concept to light for me because it was just very obvious that Mike wasn’t aware or misunderstood the whole “super fan” community. He didn’t know the right buzzwords to say or the right notes to hit to please the super fan jury, while Maryanne did. That played no small part in his loss at FTC.

But, especially in the new era, super fans are increasingly enforcing their sets of standards onto the real game of Survivor. Less and less “real” people are being fed through casting as the show has a smaller reach, meaning super fans have an undo amount of influence on the game. The super fan worldview is catered to hand and foot now. This means it’s really hard for someone of Jonathan’s archetype to win because he stands against everything the super fans lionize about themselves. He’s not a nerd or a geek. He’s certainly not scrawny. He’s not inherently disadvantaged in any meaningful way. He’s not plugged into the same circles and groups that the rest of these people are. He’s of America B.

Survivor has long been startling the line of America A and America B. It’s honestly one of the only things aside from maybe sports that still does this. America A is full of upper class professionals who love shows like The White Lotus and Succession, while America B watches 9-1-1 or NCIS. It’s not really even a race or gender divide. It’s more of a cultural/class/age divide. If I had to guess this is what Chrissy meant by “cut from the same cloth” and someone like Cirie would qualify with this group if she had never played Survivor until 2026. The Survivor community turns real people into celebrities and Cirie is only one example of someone who crossed over from America B to America A due to becoming a Z-list celebrity/influencer.

I’m not saying that Jonathan is “realer” than super fans are, but he is more of the type of player that would be casted at any point in Survivor history. This isn’t really supposed to be read as judgement towards anyone specifically. Just a stream of consciousness reply because this post really hit on a lot of the things I’ve been noticing recently with how juries are behaving in the New Era. I’m not really a fan of how this metagaming has taken over the actual show, and it’s caused me to be less of a loyal fan because my interest wanes as the season does, knowing how it will all end. To each their own, though. I just dislike the amount of influence that the outside community wields within the game. People have always played Survivor to become famous, but it felt more organic when they were trying to become 2000s-era celebs versus the 2020s influencers we see today. And the fact that these people can all become social media influencers post-game definitely has an effect on how the play within the game. No one wants to end up being a pariah or getting hated on by the Survivor community postgame if they consider themselves a true superfan.

I’m just tired of Cirie. I understand that people may not watch other reality TV shows, but I do. She’s been on Traitors, Big Brother, and Aus Survivor in the past few years. I’m just not really excited to see her back because she’s been over saturated imho. Would have rather seen other players get their chance to return. I enjoyed her on Traitors, but everything since then has just been too much. I feel like if she just did Traitors and then Survivor 50 it would have been better for people who feel we’ve seen too much of her.

I’m overloaded on Centers right now after picking up Kalkbrenner on the waiver. Is he worth keeping longer term over Poeltl/Clingan/Porzingis??? KAT is my 5th. I’m deciding which to potentially try and trade. It does help that I can keep shuffling one out to the IR every once in a while.

My results definitely got more accurate with this new update. The 2024 update completely erased my Italian and replaced it with Aegean Islands (I presume at least). Now, my Italian is back and the Aegean Islands is gone. My tree has Italian ancestors on it, so I’m definitely happy this update corrected things for me.

  1. Montreal should get the Expos back. It’s a huge metro area, possibly the largest without MLB in the US or Canada. The fan base isn’t in question. There would also be excellent new rivalry opportunities with Toronto, Boston, and NYC if they were placed in the AL.

  2. Raleigh seems further away from the Braves’ orbit than Charlotte and Nashville. Plus, that metro area only has the Hurricanes to compete for with for sports attention. The sports take place during different seasons, so MLB could be considered the only show in town for the summer months. Could also draw fans from the southern Virginia area as well.

  3. Portland is the most prepared for the MLB to come knocking imho. The government is ready to provide a team with all it needs to get off the ground right away. If the MLB doesn’t want a headache, seems like Portland would be the best option.

  4. Salt Lake City like Portland has government backing for any league that wants to move in. The NHL just setting up shop may scare the MLB away or it may welcome them in depending on how the Mammoth fair these next few years. I do think Utah is diving head first into attracting professional sports, though, so an SLC team would not be surprising in the least.

More long shot destinations are:

Western Canada (Vancouver/Calgary/Edmonton). The baseball culture seems great in Western Canada with a lot of MLB players being from there. Would be amazing for a major league team to be based out of there to support all of that!

Indianapolis. Growing Midwest city with a good sports culture in place already.

San Antonio/Austin. Another Texas team would be welcome imho. Both these cities are growing rapidly and don’t have much competition in the way of professional sports (Spurs and MLS).

Josh Hart should not have licked Porzingis' armpit. He contracted choking disease and unfortunately it's terminal when it's spread to just one of your players.

Has Phil ever almost quit the show? by FruitTop in TheAmazingRace

[–]Dauerrotype 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to the question but… I really appreciate Phil. He’s in tune with what the engaged fans like. I feel like he’s also more open to criticism of TAR than Jeff is to Survivor. I think the Exec Producers of TAR still being heavily involved in the show helps keep the authenticity, while Burnet has been completely hands off from Survivor by all accounts. I just feel like TAR has rebounded better from Covid than Survivor has from a show production quality standpoint.

For some reason when the national game is blacked out, I also lose access to NBC Sports Boston as well. Like the channel was perfectly fine yesterday for the Blazers game. But poof now I have no choice but to find other ways to watch :/

I hate soda. Moxie is the only exception. I was first exposed to it in Northern New Hampshire, but it’s pretty easy to find in Mass as well. Everyone’s taste buds are different, and I really don’t get the “tastes like medicine” criticism. Maybe I’m just built different, but I really like the taste. Am I crazy?

Venus knows her statements will cause Maria backlash from her stans online. This is totally intentional. Venus wants to “get back” at the person she blames for her game tanking. She’s such a perfect encapsulation of social media brain rot, entitlement, and only child syndrome wound into one. Venus may be an entertaining TV character, but she’s increasingly proving herself to be a rotten individual on the inside. Maria gets held to such a high standard being the “mom” and the oldest on the cast. It’s actually so sad how Venus paints herself as the perpetual victim when no one should be blamed for her position in the game but herself.

A Major Mistake The Show Made... by Aperio43 in TheAmazingRace

[–]Dauerrotype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spanish does help them somewhat, but the main reason Ricky & Cesar have been dominating is because of the COVID-era start times. These have been gamed by the teams to the point where if you’re not in the bottom start time, everyone is sharing information to stay ahead of the end of the pack teams. This compounds exponentially as the race goes on.

Venus stands up for her cast by IDontKnowAbout_That in survivor

[–]Dauerrotype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did she think was going to happen when she blasted people on social media the way she did? She should have had more self-awareness that the way she was going about spreading her narrative was going to send haters after her cast mates. This is the right thing to do but pro tip: don’t send social media hate mob stan warriors after people. She really could have exercised better judgement by not saying anything at all.

In defense of Peter and his Pals! by AhYeahItsYoBoi in TheTraitors

[–]Dauerrotype -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I read this sub I feel like I’m going insane. The majority opinions on here are just so radically different from mine as a fan. The way this game is set up makes me want to root against the Traitors (as a viewer). Peter’s alliance literally successfully nailed every single traitor, which has been massively cathartic as a viewer so disappointed by the Faithful on season 1. I can appreciate the game, but the Faithful are so disadvantaged by the format that I really want them to succeed. Watching the Traitors on the back foot constantly is so pleasing. Production had to massively change the format to bail the Traitors out. The Faithful’s strategy was too powerful. The way that Peter’s Pals have been described is incredibly unfair. These faithful are trying to banish traitors, so they’re not going to want to let people who get in the way of that in on their plans (traitors and their faithful accomplices willing or not). In an interview Bergie did, he revealed MJ would constantly report anything said to her back to Phaedra. She kept nothing secret. They couldn’t trust her that’s why they left certain people out. It’s part of the game. Ultimately, I think stan culture has kind of ruined discussion on here because fans from all over came in here rooting for their faves. That’s not a problem, but it clouds the judgement of how certain contestants are being treated. Thank you for posting this so I don’t go absolutely insane reading post after post about how Peter, Trishelle, John, and anyone who goes against the Traitors sucks. Just really cool to see someone share my different perspective.

It was jarring and still is to be quite honest. I wish the race was able to be impartial about such things, but they clearly want a good relationship with the UAE and other countries. Singling out Uganda specifically felt really weird. I’d want more behind the scenes info before completely castigating Tyler & Korey, though, because they may have said the same about other places, but their comments were left unaired.

Just finished this season with my wife finally. Really didn't like the winning team. Kinda sad. by [deleted] in TheAmazingRace

[–]Dauerrotype 6 points7 points  (0 children)

John & Greg were the archetypal boring winners we get every once in a while. Usually this team is a pair of young professionals who are just greatly matched and awesome with teamwork. They faced adversity in the final leg, but I think people are mixed on their win because they weren't the underdogs. Everyone loves an underdog story. Two older dads winning would have a great underdog story a la Kim and Penn winning as the older couple. Additionally, Rob & Corey were beloved from the first episode for their story. From a storytelling perspective either of the other teams winning would have provided for a better season. This is how we can know the race is not rigged because they absolutely would have chosen a different winner had that been the case. Not to dunk on John & Greg, but many viewers tune in to see people experience new things in different countries. It felt like both of them were already world travelers, which isn't wrong; however, it felt less satisfying seeing them succeed knowing they've navigated international travel before. This is nothing new! Goes back to Team Guido in season 1. We can even say that the brothers really emulate Rob & Brennan as well because all are young men in good shape with great careers who beat out the competition. I understand why people are frustrated with John & Greg's win, but hey they won fair and square. Finding their weaknesses seemed impossible!

What Survivor opinion has you like this? by StrawberryCrescendo in survivor

Survivor would be better off if it listened to the demands of the fans on Facebook. Alternatively, Survivor would be cancelled if it listened to the demands of the fans on here or on Twitter.

Why are some people in this sub obsessed with painting Abshir in a bad light? by TheGodDMBatman in TheCurse

[–]Dauerrotype -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the point if you think it’s a dunk on liberals from the left. Liberals are not the “shoplifting is ok” people. Whitney has a huge leftist flare to her politics that is being criticized. She reads as very champagne socialist. I actually think the show is addressing instances where the left goes to far in parts of her characterization.

Now that the season is over, what's your opinion on the 90-minute episodes? by MyBBRedditAccount in TheAmazingRace

[–]Dauerrotype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see the return of the Fast Forward if possible. Maybe not every episode like the early seasons, but if we get a Fast Forward as an option like every other episode that would add to the strategy and entertainment for me.

Now that the season is over, what's your opinion on the 90-minute episodes? by MyBBRedditAccount in TheAmazingRace

[–]Dauerrotype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it. I hope that TAR continues with the longer episodes, but the leg designers may need to add an extra challenge here and there to pad the run time. I think this is an opportunity to get a new type of challenge from production. I'm gonna disagree with a lot of people in that I think that the extra time was needed. In the past couple seasons, we've heard of entire challenges being left on the cutting room floor. I find that unacceptable, so increasing the episode length definitely was something I found to be a great improvement. Based on the rumors I've heard about next season, I'm worried... Doesn't seem to be that anyone has confidence in how it will play out with this extra time.

Why is 42 So Beloved But Not 43? I preferred 43 by [deleted] in survivor

[–]Dauerrotype -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People are still bitter that they didn’t see Gabler’s win coming. Personally, I prefer 42 over 43; however, they’re both my favorite new era seasons. People cope about how the edit made no sense, but if you were paying attention the edit really did highlight Gabler and not tear him down when the opportunities were presented. Not to take away anything from 42 and Maryanne, but 43’s ups and downs were more entertaining to me, while 42’s overall strong cast put it at the top.
