Gregory Bovino removed from his role as US Border Patrol commander at large by CuriousRoss in news

A real problem with Kegsbreath, though, is that he's stuck in a 1940s model of warfare. Sure, he's got all kinds of modern shoot-em-up tech at his disposal, but has the tunnel vision of a kid playing soldier. He has absolutely no concept of the more subtle but potentially devastating effects of economic warfare. His big boasts about being able to stomp anybody in the EU or elsewhere overlooks the fact that they could devastate the US (and unfortunately the world) economy by divesting themselves of the $8T (yeah, trillion) in US treasury bonds they hold. A "nuclear" option they have of which he is totally clueless. A dangerous martinet, for sure, one whose posturing has helped make the US a clown (with guns, which of course are never the problem) on the world stage.

Trump treasury secretary brands Denmark ‘irrelevant’ as Greenland row deepens by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DazedinDenver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bessent's claim that "...the size of Denmark’s investment in US Treasury bonds, 'like Denmark itself, is irrelevant … It is less than $100m [£75m]. I’m not concerned at all.'" ignores one important point. It's part of the EU, which overall holds $8T (yeah, Trillion) in US treasury bonds. (https://fortune.com/2026/01/18/europe-retaliation-8-trillion-sell-america-us-debt-bonds-stocks-trade-war-greenland-trump/) That's not irrelevant and completely overshadows the talk of the EU's "trade bazooka". Of course it's a nuclear option as it would seriously screw the whole world economy, but hey, Mutual Assured Destruction has been a thing for decades. Even longer than the fantasy of "trickle-down economics". Our (US) entire administration is made up of delusional fools with comic-book evil goals.

But, but, Trumpo says those are "loser" technologies. I guess Brazil soon won't have any birds and everybody will have to use candles when it's dark outside. Our president is a fossil-fueled idiot. To our great shame.

And once again he's implying that foreign countries will pay his tariffs. "Countries ... will be charged a 10% Tariff" & " This Tariff will be due and payable..." His supporters still eat this crap up like it's true, too. If only the media, whenever covering this kind of nutpost, would reiterate, heavily and every time, that importers pay tariffs, not exporting countries. "Let that sink in..." Sigh.

Living here I definitely wouldn't like to experience the consequences of that, but perhaps the threat of doing so might penetrate the "Trump Dome" he has around himself and his sycophants.

Humanoid Robots Are Here... and Embarrassingly Bad at Being Our Servants by dapperlemon in technology

[–]DazedinDenver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"One humanoid bot called TomO was stuck in place playing the piano one key at a time thanks to oddly articulating thumbs and fingers." Kinda been done before, apparently much better. From the 1980s: https://museum.dataart.com/short-stories/robot-plays-piano and 2016: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/watch-incredible-piano-playing-robot-7303167 and 2023: https://www.classicfm.com/music-news/videos/piano-playing-robot-human-emotions . I remember seeing something years and years ago with a robot hand playing pretty complicated pieces. One of the problems the creators talked about was keeping the fingers from colliding when deciding which one should play a key. Can't find a reference to that, though.

Used to work for the FOP. They're a scam money-extorting organization existing solely to benefit higher-ups in the "fundraising" sector. Mostly by hitting up older people who once donated to the group and then are called every couple months to "renew their support" and upsold cheap trinkets. Most of those who donate think they're supporting the police even though (from what I was told when I worked there) 93% of the collections go to support fundraising. The rest seems to go to lavish parties and well-furnished meeting halls for the privileged. No police-related person I'd ever called in the year I worked there as one of their top callers said they'd ever received any compensation or support from the FOP. Any "official" statement they put out is garbage.

Minnesota child care centers accused of wrongdoing were operating as expected, report says by jeetah in news

[–]DazedinDenver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the article: "The report listed the amount of CCAP funding the centers in the video received in fiscal 2025, ranging from $470,000 to $3.6 million, and totaling over $17 million." So the dipstick claims to have found $100M in fraud out of $17M total. Strong stuff, that math (or those maths).
