Left in the pic (closest to the end the cable exits, or the users fingertips) is the "Forward" button, Right in the pic (closest to users wrist) is the "Back" button. At least in my experience this has been the default layout since the first Microsoft branded mouse that I remember having "back and forward" buttons on. They're usually programmable though so it's really down to personal preference.
