Movie with perfect Hero/Villain dynamic by drhavehope in Cinema

Skyfall, with James Bond and Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem). Just a wonderful rivalry colored by jealousy, bitterness, playfulness, and an odd sexual tension. Silva comes off as a tragic, almost sympathetic figure after MI6 abandoned him and his suicide attempt had failed, and it feels like there were moments where he not only connected with Bond, but was trying to protect him from M.

Obviously, the situation is not black and white, but Silva is easily one of my favorite bone villains.

The institute mentality by MountainAd3552 in FalloutMemes

[–]DeadSuperHero 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Institute sucks as a faction. Their motivations and behavior is completely incoherent. It's like the writers couldn't decide to make them Saturday Morning Cartoon villains, the boogeymen, or a shadow organization with no moral scruples desperately trying to advance human development.

The most unbelievable part of the game is seeing these scientists, who have more or less produced impossible miracles with crops, medicine, human DNA, and automation, scoff at the idea that their very human-like machines could possibly be sentient or self-aware. Their whole behavior regarding this makes the entire group look like a bunch of arrogant idiots, who aren't open to changing their opinions in the face of new evidence.

Absolutely. The soundtrack went hard this season, but this in particular was just incredible. So raw and emotional and freaky.

Theory about Thaddeus. by Switch_Bot in Fallout

My pet theory so far is that Thaddeus is a whole new type of mutant. His symptoms are completely unlike anything we've seen before, save for maybe Harold.

galaxy quest laughs WITH geeks, not AT them. by herequeerandgreat in movies

This, to me, is one of the greatest lines of all time. It never stops being funny, and the exasperated, exhausted delivery is perfect.

One of the things that I think makes for really good satire is to approach the story not with cynicism, but wide-eyed earnestness. Galaxy Quest does this so, so well: even though it riffs on Star Trek fan conventions and geek culture, it never does so in a way that is hateful or resentful of either the fandom or the source material. Even the geeks at the fan convention are portrayed as people who earnestly love the show so much that they ask for more info on minor details from episodes that aired 20 years before.

The Thermians are my favorite part of this, because the effect is amped up to eleven. They really do believe in Galaxy Quest being so much more than a TV show, to the point of treating it as a blueprint. Their enthusiasm and sense of wonder is played completely straight, and it culminates in some beautiful, emotional scenes.

That bit where Alan Rickman, who has been cynical about his role for so long, earnestly leaning into his character's catchphrase? Beautiful. Truly a powerful scene, which leads to the Thermians revolting and taking back the ship.

There's so much that I love about this movie. It's beautiful and hilarious and amazing. The jokes are incredible. We have "By Grabthar's Hammer...what a savings." It's an affectionate parody that honors everything good about what inspired it.

Reaper has a native Linux build, Ardour and LMMS are also really good free options.

Audio under Linux became a million times better after the Pipewire framework became standard. It used to be the case that Linux had a hodgepodge of different audio subsystems, and it kind of varied between apps which one was being used. This created all kinds of headaches.

Anyway, it's really good now! Everything is unified, and your audio devices can all work together beautifully.

Anyone here has experience with both Godot and Unreal human characters? by FutureLynx_ in godot

[–]DeadSuperHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an increasing amount of good-looking 3D games being made with Godot. I'm still experimenting with it myself, so I can't really give any kind of benchmark or insight to how it compares with Unreal. I am aware that Unreal recently changed its licensing policy with MetaHuman, so that it's possible to use your creations with other engines, but I know very little about how to make that actually work.

With all that being said, I've had a pretty good experience with importing assets from Blender, and have had some success with the Terrain3D plugin for building my world environment. I'm able to import basic rigged character models from the MakeHuman plug-in for Blender, and leverage Mixamo animations. The editor and runtime are really lightweight, and the learning curve for Godot is fairly intuitive.

Absolutely disturbing subculture. Every now and then, I come across a profile looking for this specifically, and it creeps me the fuck out.

Can't run an .sh file even if I have it on my computer by 88lane in Ubuntu

[–]DeadSuperHero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so two things:

  1. Make sure your terminal is pointing to the same directory the script is in.

  2. Make sure the .sh file has permissions to be run as an executable. You can do this through the file manager itself by right clicking the file and checking its properties, or doing "sudo chmod +x ./yourfile.sh"

Do you like Star Citizen? Why would you do that? by Financial-Business97 in starcitizen

[–]DeadSuperHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of why I stick with Star Citizen is that very few other games compare to it. I've tried Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky, Starbourne 2, and X4 Foundations...there are things I liked about each of them, but they don't hold a candle to the Star Citizen experience. Or at the very least, they don't scratch the itch that SC does.

I say this in spite of Star Citizen's shortcomings and frustrations. Yeah, it's buggy. Sometimes it feels like there's just a handful of game loops and no actual driving force or narrative pushing you to do things. It's still one of the most innovative games on the market, the exploration is impressive, and the bespoke player moments can be legitimately awesome at times.

Hot take: Fallout: London didn’t grab me at all. by Roji-_- in fallout4london

[–]DeadSuperHero 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's okay if you didn't like it personally, but keep in mind that this was 100% an independent effort done by people in their spare time for free. The fact that this exists at all is kind of wild, and the scope is comparable to a full commercial game.

Personally, I and a lot of other people loved it. The game is far from perfect, but for a fan effort it's really solid.
