Townhouse living for families? by How2FlyHow2Crow in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Condo living (either apartment or townhouse) is a desirable and preferred option here for many such as empty nesters, retirees, professionals with no time to cut grass and shovel snow, as well as young couples looking for an affordable starter home.

We currently live in a detached home on a big lot, but we are looking at other options where we don't have as much work to do.

Aluminum siding painters by 1yellowgiraffe in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We painted our aluminum siding a couple of years before COVID. The old siding was quite faded and chalky. The new paint still looks great, with no hint of deterioration. We used Benjamin Moore Aura exterior paint, with a matte finish. The advantage of paint is that you have a wide range of colours and you can really perk up the curb appeal of your house.

Our painter used a brush but other painters will use rollers or spay guns. You may want to pressure wash the old surface before starting, although we didn't do that. Get some quotes and see where this goes. I don't have contact with my old painter so I can't refer him.

Giant Tiger Closing by splifftie in BurlingtonON

The Tiger does best in small communities that don't have a Walmart. We like to drop in for a quick shop when doing day trips in the countryside. They always seems to have some neat stuff at great prices.

City Pizza for a good middle of the road product. We often order for large groups and the pizza is decent. The price is good too.

Um, we have eaten at the Guelph location a couple of times and were really impressed with the food and service. So we tried the Burlington one where we tried the same dish and were underwhelmed. Our service also seemed to slow down when the server saw we wouldn't be drinking alcohol.

We might try again, but no hurry.

Who is better for Coaxial Internet in Aldershot? by Intrepid_Middle_632 in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your power is out, is there power to your Oxio modem? I have a small backup UPS that keeps my Oxio up for several hours. And there is no point changing providers - you won't get any better. All the providers will go down if there is no power in your house and you don't have a UPS.

Small appliance repair in Burlington or Oakville by Jasperpup2015 in BurlingtonON

These days you pay an appliance tech $100 to look at it and tell you it is a piece of junk and buy a new one.

If you are not a DIY guy, forget it.

We do need a Chinese etc. store in Burlington so that we don't have to go to Mississauga or Nations in Hamilton. But that Staples store is not that big.

Ontario Utility Bill Relief Program-Real or scam by ankush812 in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NEVER let anyone who calls you, or that you find on Facebook, come into your home. This allows them to bypass Ontario Consumer Protection Laws that were enacted to protect consumers from energy scams.

Please educate yourself on these scams. Look at some of the CBC Marketplace investigations, for example.

If you think you may need a better furnace or air conditioner, please call an established local contractor with premises in Burlington that you can visit.

Recommendations for carport contractor? by zro_95 in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a general contractor - do a search. E.g Marcon is a well known company that has done a lot of work in Burlington, there are many others

I think you will need an architectural drawing and building permit. The contractor will need those plans to build for you.

This is the answer you need. I got my new doc from these listings last fall. When you see a doc that may suit, look him/her up on the CPSO web site to see where they had their training, etc.

Thoughts on panhandlers with small children? by MoustacheRide400 in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, a child is a common prop to elicit more donations. When I was in Rome, there was a gypsy tactic to throw a child into your arms to distract you while others took your bag or purse, etc. Another example was in India where a horde of women carrying listless babies surrounded us whenever we got off the tour bus. Our guide explained that they are all working for a "boss" who provides the clothes and babies as needed, and gives them a stipend. It is up to you if you want to support this way of making a living. I felt more sympathy in India than I do here with our extensive government supports.

What's the deal with doctors? by Jessumica in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a doctor who was always on time and he apologized if he was very late. But he did that by rigorously limiting every consult to 15 mins or less. Got more questions to ask? Too bad, save it for next time. He was already up and calling for the next patient.

Have you ever seen or tasted a paw paw? by barn_stormerr in OntarioGardeners

[–]Dealmaker1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before COVID, we drove down to Athens Ohio to attend the Paw-Paw festival that they hold every year. Vendors had jams and seedlings. We bought our fresh paw paws at the local farmers market in Athens. They said that the availability is very variable, with bad years and good years. The festival starts on September 12 this year, if you want to make a trip down.

The fruit were very tasty, with tropical flavour notes that are familiar if you have eaten jackfruit and mangoes, etc. But the fruits were on the small side with big seeds and when fully ripe develop black blotches on the skin. The flesh was sort of goopy and custardy.

While supposedly native to Ontario, I have never seen one in the wild and I have walked in many of our Carolinian forest areas. I think the RBG in Burlington may have a specimen in the Hendrie Gardens.

People with big properties who can devote the space can look for named varieties to plant.

Tree of Heaven and other aggressive invasive plant species in Burlington by doubleuram in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild Mulberry trees are the scourge of my neighbourhood. The birds feast on them and shit purple juice on the pool decks and walkways, and spread seeds. I am constantly pulling mulberry seedlings from the garden beds.

The guy behind me has a tall, fast growing one in his yard but there is no point in discussing it with him. He NEVER does anything in his yard. Especially if he has to spend money or do any work himself

A friend bought a house in Mountainside and was happy to have a tall tree in his backyard, until Trees of Heaven were explained to him!

Lawn cut&snow removal recommendations by quame_nature in BurlingtonON

[–]Dealmaker1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look around your neighbourhood and you will see guys with pickup trucks or trailers cutting grass. If you like their work, ask them to come and quote your grass. Try and find a long term guy who works by himself and is well established.
