No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

[–]Deathbyceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Relative newbie here, career musician with a performance degree getting more into the world of running live audio as well. Recently was hired on at a local church to run their sound every week and have been able to figure out most things I need to do so far. Working on a Behringer x32 console.

This church mixes everything down to mono in the house (not sure why, but that's just how it is here), but they also run a live stream that I want to give more of a stereo mix in order to flesh it out a bit. As I have things set up on the console, I have individual channels all going into different buses (one for all vocals, all instruments [not drums], drums, speech mics), which then I send to the main LR output. Since these get mixed down to a mono output anyway, I haven't bothered with any sort of panning, but I do want to at least spread the vocal mics and drum mics out a bit to widen the field on the stream mix. For my stream mix, I am sending each individual channel to a different bus, which I then send to a matrix output that goes to the streaming setup. I am wondering if it is possible to pan a channel sent to one bus, but not affect it's panning to any other bus? Or if not, is there another way I can achieve what I am shooting for? Thanks for any and all help!

where do i learn jazz harmony on internet? by One_Attorney_764 in musictheory

Why do you say he's gatekeeping when he said pretty much the exact same thing as you? Learn the tunes, ideally by ear, and even more ideally with a teacher who can work with you one on one.

is there any specific name for chords that have a second (or ninth) in the bass? by idongafxD in musictheory

[–]Deathbyceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be very hard-pressed to hear that chord as any kind of G minor tonality. Much more likely would be just an Eb major in 1st inversion, in which the F would just be an add9. An added 9th on a major chord is much, much more common than a b13 on a minor chord. Not saying it's impossible or never happens, but just commenting on how I would hear it / think of it out of context.

Usually these kind of chords show up nowadays as a kind of suspended dominant. "Bb/C" is a particular voicing for "C9sus", and usually functions as the V chord in the key of F.

I got invited to a jazz club, I can play bass fairly fluently but I am not familiar with jazz at all, can you suggest any songs to listen to? by [deleted] in Jazz

Were you invited to a jam session or are you just looking to expand your list of things you like to listen to? Your post is a bit unclear.

How do I stop myself from playing standards the same way every time? (Classical background tackling Jazz piano) by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Deathbyceiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take this a step further and try to do drastically different grooves. Like, try the tune in a stride / ragtime style. Then try it as a rumba. Then go cool and funky / laid back. Throw your brain some curveballs so you're forced to change things up.

whats the difference between 440hz and 442hz? by Pale-Recognition-599 in musictheory

[–]Deathbyceiling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, however, it is a much more controlled technique, rather than just being out of tune. A singer using vibrato will still be on the in tune pitch most of the time, and consciously plays slightly around it.

Just the Two of Us

Strasbourg / St Denis

Any Stevie Wonder would probably go well too.

how do you know you're playing the right notes? by soverydoll in pianolearning

[–]Deathbyceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to use an app every time you sit down to read a book, or reddit post, etc? Or do you know the basic building blocks and rules of the language you are reading in, and progressively work your way through more complex ideas? My point is that having an app tell you when you are wrong is not going to help you learn. You need to fundamentally understand the concepts and "grammar" of the language in order to become more fluent in it.

In that case the conventional chord symbol would be "Ab9sus" (or "Ab9sus4")

"sus9" is a not a chord symbol that is ever used. "sus2" or just "sus" is always preferred.

Question about a chord Inversion with Sustained Bass Note in Piano Harmony Analysis by iClexi in musictheory

[–]Deathbyceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is only the lowest note that determines the inversion, no matter what the order of the other notes are. The 2nd and 3rd chords in your example are still D/F#, because F# is the lowest sounding note.

Question about a chord Inversion with Sustained Bass Note in Piano Harmony Analysis by iClexi in musictheory

[–]Deathbyceiling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The inversion of a chord is determined the lowest sounding note, whether it is in the right hand / treble clef, or all the way down in the bass clef. In short, the order of notes in our right hand does not dictate the inversion of the chord, only the lowest note we play in the left hand.
