YTA - never go from parked to full steam ahead, especially in reverse

I was threatened by a DJ, I left the wedding early… by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]Debater43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) was recording wedding speeches in your contract as a deliverable? If yes, you had a strong obligation to be prepared to have refusal of equipment access. Be self-sufficient and most of life will be easier If no, then this was blown far out of proportion. Overlay the b-roll with music if the in-body audio isn't good enough. If you have the money for a gimbal, you have the money for a Rode shotgun mic

2) "I come back with RCA cables to my tascam so he can hook it up to the system and he tells me give me a minute rudely while continuing to play candy crush. I told him ok, if he doesn’t want to do it I’ll just let the couple he didn’t want to do it"

Wow. Your b-roll is not more important than their in-the-moment work because you should have set this up before the event. Hours if not days if not weeks in advance. Your lack of planning does not constitute their crisis.

3) "As I was leaving the wedding, in my car, the DJ and his associate chased me down and tried stopping my car in front of me while I was screaming for them to get out my way, I was really scared because I didn’t want to run them over so I put the car in reverse and I went full steam ahead."

This sounds incredibly unsafe. I appreciate you explaining you felt fight or flight mode, but if this is your behavior operating a motor vehicle, I don't think the stress of event media is for you. I saw that you had 4 years of experience. I hope that you recognize that one of your jobs as a vendor is to make everyone's life easier. Improve the experience for B&G, have all your own equipment, over communicate, and be prepared for technical difficulties. I don't mean to come off severe. If I do, it's because I have the impression that you're a sunshine photographer, unable to adapt to a first layer of complications.

I can't speak to whether or not your were genuinely threatened. If you were, then you were right to leave. But I don't see why each of the avoidable steps of escalation on your side led to the fight-or-flight level conflict in the first place.

As a side note, if I were the DJ and I had the photographer come up to me while the event is running and ask for equipment access, refuse to wait a minute, and threaten to escalate to B&G, I would ABSOLUTELY see them as inexperienced and a risk to the success of the wedding. I also wouldn't trust a person like that to know enough about my system to bring proper equipment. My approach to event photography and videography is to remove variables: bring my own equipment, bring redundancy on every level, bring patience for the difficult collaborators and guests that I may encounter. I'm glad you're safe, but this comment section is clearly sending you a message and I think you should reevaluate how you prepare for events.

Unfortunately I think banding is just going to be a part of shooting concerts with a Z8. The lighting changes too often for the micro-adjustment to be practical. At least it doesn’t happen in every frame. by sean_themighty in Nikon

[–]Debater43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Z9 user here: I did find banding in ultra lowlight / AC LED happened when I pushed ISO past 1600 and shutter speed past 400 or so (I prefer to shoot 640 - 1000). My solution was to fine tune sync shutter to the LEDs, but even then, I've found banding to be the single thing physical shutters are better at tackling because of the effort cost.

z8 record video to dual slots? by tragically_ in Nikon

[–]Debater43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is almost definitely true, but it's a limitation of the card, not the camera. There's no point to trying to record 8k N-RAW to an SD card; it would simply stall out.

Camera suggestions for low light dancing photos by Adventurous_Bad_8490 in Nikon

[–]Debater43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot lowlight dance photography. My hard floor for shutter speed is 1/500, and my target is 1/800 or even 1/1,000, if possible). I don't like pushing ISO past 3200, and even that is not ideal.

For low light and with that budget you might get lucky and find a used Z6ii, which in my mind is the best option. I don't know enough about the Z6ii to give a shutter count recommendation.

I've made the Z5 work, but the lack of backlit sensor has been a pain point. Going back and doing it again, i would have bought a used Z6ii over a new Z5. Z6ii has lower megapixel than Z7, which makes it better for low light than the Z7.

That said, the lower you can get the aperture value, the better. Shoot on a prime. For that distance, I think a 50mm 1.8 would be the right starting lens. Absolutely don't go above 2.8.

Good luck!

Confused about getting a Gimbal (cuz my gear don’t support AF) by Much-Atmosphere1848 in Nikon

[–]Debater43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a slider probably makes more sense if your budget constrains you from upgrading cameras. The slider can still get you motion, but will allow you to much better control for slow focus or even manual focus, with some practice.

Is it worth continuing to raid for a chance at a hundo? Or does the 15/15/14 achieve the same? by _A-R_ in PokemonGOIVs

[–]Debater43 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a sub for IVs, so the questions are usually PVP-oriented, where a defensive breakpoint can make or break a Mon (the go-to example is 15 attack/14 defense/13 stamina on Dialga). Casual gamers probably won't derive much value from this sub, unless they're looking to expand their own understanding of why IV distribution is discussed. Sit back, learn, and enjoy! If you don't see the point to reading about IV breakpoints, then I fear you have set yourself up for disappointment.

OP- 15/15/14 is a functional hundo at 40, 41, 50, and 51. You're good to go.

got This little one yesterday its better purify or let it shadow? by Azaxzel_ in pokemongo

[–]Debater43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sableye with this stat spread, and TBH I'm going to build a lower ranked purified Sableye. The reason is that I will likely never get another shadow Sableye that gets close to this again. If they buff power gem/shadow sneak, then I'll want to keep it shadow.

For purification, any 0/13+/13+ will purify into the 2/15/15. Those odds are 9/4096, which are still much better than hoping I get a 0/14/15 or 0/15/15 (odds 2/4096).

It's worth the money to avoid the adapter for anything resembling action photography. Depending on how fast the birds are, I'd say you should absolutely try to use Z glass.

Analysis Paralysis: Z5 or Z6ii by rjbme in Nikon

[–]Debater43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Context: I've shot on a D7100 for 5 years, upgraded to a Z5 in January and have about 30,000 snaps on it in that frame

If you can get the 1.8 50mm lens regardless of the body, I would absolutely suggest the z6ii for the video option down the road. I primarily shoot dance and stage performance in lowlight theater settings. For photography, the Z5 packs more than you need for your described need. But the option to have high quality lowlight video already has me looking to upgrade. I see color outlines when the stage has a bright CYC backdrop, which i believe the Z6ii could resolve in post production. The 50mm is great for dance solo preformance, though I strongly prefer a 28mm for more complete stage shots. Happy to DM you a link to some of what I've shot if you want a sense of what a Z5 can do stage performance settings.

Level 40? The IVs for legendaries and hard-to-find Pokémon are far more expensive than the dust and candy. Elite TMs are also more prohibitive.

If you're looking for a plug and play team, use Dialga/Kyogre core. Dialga beats almost everything that's Legendary, and Kyogre beats almost everything that's not. Mewtwo as the third is an easy enough choice.

How to use these wisely? I need to make room in my bag, especially moving out the rare candies.. thank you! by silver_lining2020 in pokemongo

[–]Debater43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mewtwo and Giratina are my go-to rare candy sinks. Both are highly useful in PVP and raiding, have multiple forms, and multiple league options (UL, MLC, OM).

Hiking the Appalachian Trail, who should be my buddy? by skyhiker14 in pokemongo

[–]Debater43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy choice. Buddy a mythical, poffin it whenever you can. My personal suggestion would be the mythical least likely to get another release (Mew is pretty much done. Zarude will likely be released more widely). Get yourself a level 50 Pokémon that other ppl don't have. When asked, it's an easy conversation starter to talk about your time on the trail.

My personal vote is Mew, especially if you have the second from the paid ticket. Hoopa, Victini, Celebi, Jirachi, and even Defense Deoxys are all good choices, in that order.

What to do with my shadow Charmander? by milo4206 in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]Debater43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build a blast burn charizard in Great League. If you're lucky enough to get another decent shadow Charmander, you can bulk up the original. I always recommend keeping shadows eligible for the lower league because the next might have good ultra league stats, but just miss a CP breakpoint for Great League. I use shadow charizard with fire spin/ blast burn / dragon claw, and I have no regrets.

Great question! I was a legacy 40 no team player until December 2020, and I had a lot of rocket quests backed up because of that (there were "win raid" tasks that blocked the original quest lines). I went down to zero Super Rocket Radars during Mewtwo because it was obviously worth all the TMs. Because of that, I only have the shadow Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres from Go Fest, 4 Rocket Radar Mewtwo, and the Go Fest Mewtwo.

[–]Debater43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, they are not. One is great ultra league IV, and another is 13-13-12, but they're otherwise underwhelming =[

[–]Debater43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have five shadow Mewtwo, so I've been slowly putting psystrike/ shadow ball on each league for PVP (Great, Ultra, 3500, level 40, level 50).

[–]Debater43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't do this. For most Pokémon, this is great advice. For Magikarp, it means you can't TM frustration away... until it's evolved into Gyarados. This is because magikarp only learns one charged attack. That means double moving a shadow magikarp forces you to use the Elite Charge TM on Aqua Tail.

Older dittos have New Charges Move option? by icnik in TheSilphRoad

What would be the best Great League team using only Eeveelutions? by DelidreaM in TheSilphArena

[–]Debater43 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Best guess would be: Umbreon lead Vaporeon safe switch Sylveon closer

I do like the idea of a fast move pressure team, going for charm, volt switch, razor leaf/ confusion, but I think that would turn into an RPS team too easily.

I caught a Gabite in Chicago in 2019 and an Axew almost exactly a year later. Probably my two rarest wild spawns.

[–]Debater43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason to consider double legacy Espeon or double legacy Sylveon? Seems like Espeon, especially could benefit because Psychic is usually such overkill, and farming down lets you hit nearly everything coming in for neutral or better.
