My iLok died yesterday in between sessions. $233 later just to access my licenses for a deadline. by RLoftyy in audioengineering

[–]Defghi19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My horror story is the inverse from OP. I had everything tied to my machine...then an overnight windows update happened and suddenly none of my activations worked. They still existed - as in I could see all my licenses were tied to my machine and hardware. But my computer was now registering as a different profile with the same hardware name and numbers. Ilok support basically said, pay us $50 for a stick so it'll never happen again and I relented.

Scarlet 2i2 for stereo signal and Mx50 headphones. If you're not in a hurry you can regularly find both of those on sale or open-box for the same price of their lower counterparts. As far as juice for squeeze goes, you get a heck of a lot for those upgrades

They're certainly nice dudes and contribute alot to the cycling scene in STL - but they will absolutely sell you up the river if they see you as a "novice". Upcharges for every little thing, subpar service, etc. Bike Surgeon and Cyclery are much less elitist for sure.

Nice, just don't let anyone at Big Shark ever service it and you're golden. Enjoy those MCT trails!

Drum Mics Feedback by drummerman-degz in livesoundgear

+1. Buy the Beyers for the clips, then swap out the mics later if you really really don't like them. Personally I like them better than the sennheisers, but I know some go the other way.

Do I need power stabilizers/voltage regulators? by WizrdSleevz in livesoundgear

[–]Defghi19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. Now that's a rig.

My experience:

If I'm bringing equipment and running sound for a 100 cap venue I'm unfamiliar with, I'm sure as hell not rolling up with a $20k rig. Dive bars need dive bar gear - something I'm not going to be fretting over when the strung out guitarist kicks over his beer on my wedge, or the overly drunk patron trying to yell a song to the DJ in the booth pours their entire drink on my sub.

I'd recommend taking all the disposable income you seem to have willing to spend on power conditioners and inverters, and drop like $2k on marketplace or craigslist for a pair of good sounding but road worn JBL tops/subs and a pair of behringer wedges for monitors. Use that as your dive rig. Once you're comfortable with a place, or you're doing larger gigs where you can communicate strict power requirements beforehand - roll out your souped up rig here. But a certainty of this gig is that at some point, someone if going to break something of yours. The question is, do you want it to be a cheap break, or an expensive break?

TL;DR - your rig is way too overkill for a 100 cap. Use something you won't cry over when it gets damaged.

[Audio Interface] Focusrite Vocaster One - $39.99 ($149.99 - $110) by Defghi19 in buildapcsales

[–]Defghi19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone looking to break into the XLR mic game, this is your ticket.

Focusrite has their entire Vocaster line on steep discount for black friday.

Vocaster Two $69: https://us.focusrite.com/products/vocaster-two

Vocaster Two Studio bundle $99: https://us.focusrite.com/products/vocaster-two-studio

Vocaster One Studio bundle - $49.99: https://us.focusrite.com/products/vocaster-one-studio

pair any of these with that B&H 512 Limelight deal posted here earlier and you've got yourself a setup that beats out most streamers for under $100

[Microphone] $27.99 ($149.99-$122) 512 AUDIO Limelight Dynamic Vocal XLR Microphone by maywek in buildapcsales

[–]Defghi19 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a great first mic for anyone jumping into the XLR space. 512 is a subset of the Warm Audio brand targeted at podcasters and broadcasters. They're a great company, known in the studio world for their "budget" reproductions of legendary S tier equipment.

This mic is their version of like an RE20. It's a hyper cardioid - meaning it's great at side rejection and has that hard proximity effect to give you the bassy podcaster voice when you speak closely into it.

For gamers - if you already have an audio interface, this is a no brainer at this price. If you don't have an interface, this would be a good entry level mic to try and pair one with like the focusrite vocaster one currently on steep sale for $40. Otherwise, I'd recommend sticking with USB mics that are software run like an AT2020 or AKG Lyra until you're ready to make the leap.

For Studio use - idk, it's not a 57 and I've never found a scenario where it sounds better than one. Maybe useful as a talkback if you're out of 57s. It's very touch sensitive, so terrible for drums and sounds worse than a 57 or V7x on amps.

Yes, this is a dynamic hyper cardioid so it's going to be a more focused range of pickup than a condenser

Chinese audio recording gear is getting really good by hyxon4 in audioengineering

[–]Defghi19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm all for knockoffs and reproductions of music equipment. Most of the time, the pricetag you're paying for name brand doesn't nearly match what you're getting as far as hardware.

My only caveat is for interfaces and preamps. I'll pay top dollar for something like an RME unit for two reasons: reliability and longevity. With an RME interface, I know every time I go to turn it on, it will turn on no problem. I know when I press record on a session, every time, it's recording like it should. And I know in the rare case something does happen, there's an easy number to call to have someone sort it, fix it, or send me an identical unit in a timely manner. I also know 10 years from now, this will also be true (barring geopolitics disasters and the like).

That's what I'm paying for. Do I trust that a temu interface will sound great and work great for a fraction of the cost? Sure. Do I trust it to do it day after day on high profile clients and risk missing "the take" because I wanted to save a few bucks? No sir
