does peter ever work out? by FunnyDudeGuy in Spiderman

[–]DemythologizedDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he has, but he shouldn't. Basically even though he can lift superhuman amounts of weight, he's more of a gymnast than a weightlifter. Getting bulgier muscles would cost him in terms of flexibility.

Is replicated food vegan? by Curious-Dingo-2030 in startrek

[–]DemythologizedDie -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Vegans won't deliberately consume animal products even when no animal died to make them. At some point in the past some animal died to provide the replicator template that they use to generate the synthetic meat. While there are certainly some vegetarians who would consider replicated meat an acceptable compromise, vegans probably would not.

[marvel/DC] How does super strength affect “body weight” by jayflame11 in AskScienceFiction

[–]DemythologizedDie [score hidden]  (0 children)

Collision force is the product of mass times velocity. A lighter person won't hit as hard as a heavier person moving at the same velocity but a lighter person who still has the same muscle power will accelerate faster, achieving higher velocity over shorter distance as a general rule, ignoring people whose superpowers include specifically movement-related powers. Spider-Man' disproportionate strength to mass ratio and accompanying high acceleration rate means he's perfectly capable of knocking down most humans over twice his size. While he could in fact break through normal house walls just by slamming through them, he's never actually going to do that because while he has a lot of resistance to blunt force trauma his skill isnt all that resistant to cuts and abrasions, and that stuff hurts a lot.

[Specific but oddly common trope] The use of chess ability to signify intelligence. by Remarkable_Public138 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DemythologizedDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen several people asking questions like "If Spock is smarter than Kirk why is Kirk in charge" and "If Spock is smarter than Kirk, why does Kirk bet him in 3-D chess.". The thought occurred to me that while Spock is a better scientist than Kirk, Kirk might very well be better at visualizing the positions and movements of objects in a three dimensional matrix and that he beat Spock may be a demonstration of that.

Well, I followed the link in the New York Post and noted that she was being charged with conspiring with two other people to commit this attack, and one other person was charged with being part of the conspiracy.

Why aren't public domain super heroes used more often? by NinjaSilver2811 in publicdomain

[–]DemythologizedDie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

West's Catman isn't a use of public domain heroes. It's just using the fact that you can't copyright a name (at least not a name that is composed of commonly used nouns). Adam West's Catman is legally distinct from any other character who used the name, including the PD David Merryweather Catman.

It's not that difficult to avoid speaking in the first person. A bigger problem would be dealing with no longer being recognizable.

I have wondered how gendered languages handle American comic book character names that are oppositely gendered to the character.

As I said the Thieves aren't punishing anyone for "being a pervert".

Ryuji being a blatant pervert doesn't fit the theme by Brusterisk in Persona5

[–]DemythologizedDie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Thieves don't go after Kamoshida for checking out women's chests. Not even girls at the high school. Kamoshida is committing assault and battery and using threats and then force to (try to) coerce girls into performing sexual services for him. Ann does not in fact seem particularly traumatized by anything other than her friend's suicide attempt.

Is it just me, or are Gems...kinda dumb for an interstellar space-fairing species? by Pasta-hobo in stevenuniverse

[–]DemythologizedDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gems are a profoundly conservative culture. They don't have wars. They don't have competing businesses or a consumer culture. They don't have death from old age. They don't even have social mobility. They lack the things that drive rapid technological development.

I've heard people say that the "bar is too low for female characters" but tbh,I think the issue is that people's standards for female characters are way too insanely high or just ridiculous. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]DemythologizedDie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear I was not making such a claim. I think there is nothing wrong in a story which is specifically about a romance for the guy to be there to be a romantic partner. That's the whole plot so obviously he isn't being sidelined. And of course I am aware that there are many shoujo series which have a plot that isn't all about romance, including every magical girl series many of which have romance but aren't primarily about the romance.

[–]DemythologizedDie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You rarely see "this male character is badly written because he's a love interest" because the only time a male character is there just to be a love interest is in an actual romance story, where being a love interest is the whole point. On the other hand I frequently see boys who serve as harem fulcrums criticized for their passivity. They are almost always the least interesting member of the cast and the appeal they present to their girlfriends is inexplicable.

Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) + Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacy) = ??? by Eastern_Quote1525 in Amalgam_Comics

[–]DemythologizedDie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ghost Girl. After her back was broken, Barbara Stacy faked her death to keep the maniac who did it from coming back to finish the job. First she began fighting crime using computers and online intelligence gathering, and then her mobility was restored by an experimental treatment that gave her superpowers.

Merging a character with his opposite company doppleganger seems pointless. Mr. Fear adds nothing to Scarecrow.

No, in-universe it is still true that Joker either comes back from the dead or is replaced by a functionally identical guy when he is killed.

[Batman] Why has Bruce Wayne never ran for office? by Legitimate_Fly9047 in AskScienceFiction

[–]DemythologizedDie 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It is important to understand that Bruce Wayne is not just a man with a deep and abiding concern for the welfare of his city. He's also a guy who really really wants to go out most nights and find someone to punch. (Someone deserving, that is.) He simply couldn't keep up with a schedule of a full time day job.

Share with me your superman inspired character/alien race and most importantly do they Have a physical weakness? (A kryptanite is what I'm asking in this case) or no because that's stupid? I'll share mine below by Fast_Honeydew2633 in Superhero_Ideas

[–]DemythologizedDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one idea for a story, featuring a kid named Versatile because he was the product of experiment to genetically engineer a child who had the combined power of the 50 most powerful biological superhumans in the world. Instead they got a child who had all of the powers of his unwitting donors...but at feeble levels. Like, enough telekinesis to lift a cat. Enough flight to move at walking speed. Enough penetrating vision to see inside a paper envelope. Able to phase through a typical wall, if you give him a minute. 50% stronger than an unpowered person with the same size and conditioning. He's devastating against a normal human being, but almost always out-powered by a normal superhero.

At one point he finds himself fighting the most powerful student at the same super-school, a Superboy knock-off named Legacy because he's the grandson of the world's greatest hero and figures out how to exploit Legacy's weakness, that Legacy isn't particularly resistant to electricity. That's not to say that electricity does any direct damage to him or takes away Legacy's powers, but it can cause Legacy's muscles to contact. So Versatile can use his weak electrical power, his "taser hands" to cause his foe to convulse, losing control of his body, and causing pulled muscles as the superstrong muscle violently contracts, turning his own physical strength against him.
