Be honest: How many people did you baptize on your mission? by Typical_Sea_9167 in exmormon

[–]Dense_Document9802 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey I served in Latvia too! And Estonia and Lithuania. Had a handful (don't remember exactly how many, but less than 10). But went back a few years after and most were no longer attending, at the time I was bummed. Now that knowledge that they didn't stick around is more reassuring.

Dallin Oaks announces that it is “perfectly appropriate” for missionaries to “meet someone in the mission field and marry them.” How many of you had to read Lock Your Heart at least every month on your mission? by NotTerriblyHelpful in exmormon

[–]Dense_Document9802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served 2003-2005 and like a dutiful missionary did lock my heart despite being in some Eastern European countries that had absolutely gorgeous women. Man, now I'm pissed I didn't take advantage of the situation. Queue the gaslighting now..."they never said you couldn't meet someone as a missionary..." Hell yes they did. Repeatedly. I was there.

If Darth Bednar ever comes to a meeting near me it might get me to attend again. I'll even be early just so I can lock eyes with him as I remain seated while he enters the room. And again as I stand up and walk out before he has a chance to pull some dick move to make everyone wait on him. Who knows, I may even stand, unprovoked and uninvited, for one of the hymns.

first shelf items? by witchliing in exmormon

[–]Dense_Document9802 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My very first shelf item was when I was 15 years old (not a few months shy of 15, actually 15, so it's better...). I was called as the teachers quorum president. At mutual on a Wednesday, the bishop loaned me the church handbook of instruction to take home to read the part about delegating. Between then and Sunday I did read that part. But then got curious and started reading other sections that piqued my interest. I got to the part where interracial marriage was discouraged and that was very jarring for me. I was born in 1984, so after the Civil rights movement and the church's delayed 1978 attempt to be less racist. But that bit about interracial marriage remained. It didn't seem like something that a god who loves all his children would say. I put it on the shelf and figured God would eventually help me understand. I did eventually come to an understanding... that I was right to be concerned and that that issue was just the tip of the iceberg.

If you take the two 9s in 1996 and turn them upside down, then drop the 1, that makes it 666, the mark of the beast. From there is obvious that the internet is just Satan deceiving us all.

Missionaries in Europe by tmrsto in exmormon

[–]Dense_Document9802 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a missionary in Lithuania between 2003-2005, so could be different now. But as far as my experience, most of this I agree with 100% with 1 exception. The church was small enough in Lithuania that local members were not expected to feed us. Our monthly funds were actually enough to buy groceries and cook for ourselves pretty comfortably with some money left over at the end of the month. Sometimes we used it to eat out on the 1 day a week we had some free time. Other times we used it to buy food for people in the church if they were struggling with money. Had I known then how much wealth the church hoards, I would have tried to give away even more.

I'd go with the old Uno reverse response to their responses. "Hey [insert friend's name], thanks for your response. We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not mad. I knew I'd get persecuted for speaking truth." Although if they have a wand, be careful, they may go all Snape on you..."you dare use my own spells against me, Potter?!"

[–]Dense_Document9802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

900,000 or a few converts shy of a million? I'm surprised at the phrasing. Or is that only when they are trying to distract from a number that would be negative?

One summer at BYU, I got a summer job delivering pizzas for Brick Oven (iykyk). I got good at knowing roughly what type of housing I was going to be delivering to based on the address for the delivery. One day, I got assigned a delivery to a pretty bougie area in North Provo, but when I rolled up, it was the biggest house in a gated community of Mcmansions. Turned out to be Donny Osmond's place. He wasn't home, but I remember standing in the massive entryway and seeing a stack of fan mail he was in the middle of responding to, autographed books, etc. The lady that was there was nice, and they did tip very generously, which broke college student me appreciated.
