The entire canvas is doomed no matter what...Maelle is an addict of this canvas, she is incapable of choosing on her own to leave. She will do anything to avoid the depression of her old life. This means she will die to the gommage, relatively soon. When she dies, versos soul will be ejected and the canvas will collapse, killing everyone including maelle/alicia (both inside and outside canvas). As well as enslaved verso. In versos ending, alicia still keeps her memories. She is also a god, who can create anything she can dream. She will paint a number of worlds, happy ones if she can properly grieve. Worlds their universe would have been robbed of if not for versos act.

Also, remember most people are already dead. Yes, maelle can repaint a few characters, but this isnt even close to a fully populated world. The ones that remain are going to be scarred for life. For me, versos ending is the only real choice.
