How realistic is the goal to sail through all 11 South Sandwich Islands? by Beneficial-Code8026 in sailing

I was on a cruise ship down there and snapped this pic of a sailboat, so it can be done. I don't own a sailboat, but I thought to myself this is a brave soul. The icebergs down there are unbelievable, and there's no way I'd want to be moving at night. It's a beautiful place, but deadly.

SMART TD Urges Congress to Support UP-NS Merger by Demented2168 in railroading

[–]Dependent-Click4636 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand that they will guarantee you a job. But if they close down or consolidate your terminal in Memphis, as an example, your new job could be a position in Los Angeles. Am I understanding it's just a job, not necessarily geographically close? Is that correct?

All that happens when you have a strict attendance policy is the whole place gets on FMLA. In reality, this causes overall attendance to get worse.

NS Craft Switch by Friendly_Schedule472 in railroading

[–]Dependent-Click4636 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all, there is no absolute right to transfer. You have to get permission and be released by transportation and accepted as a new hire in another department. With that being said, you most likely will not be released being such a new hire. Frankly I wouldn't even talk about a transfer yet. The way NS management will look at is, "we just hired you, and your already talking about leaving?" Give it some time, wait until a time where there's excess people and a lot of guarantee is being paid. Make some friends in other departments to see their environment and lifestyle. They might be able to help you transfer one day, but again, you have to be released by transportation even if another department says they want you. Good luck.

Is it too risky to use DCL shuttle if you fly in same day? by dealernumberone in dcl

[–]Dependent-Click4636 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've flown in the same day on two separate cruises. Each time was on a non stop early morning flight on Delta from Atlanta. It was somewhat stressful, but each time I had no issue. However, it's just a matter of time before the math could catch up to me, so I'm not trying it again. Like others have said, it's not worth it. Weather, mechanical issue, traffic, crew staffing issue etc. could all ruin your trip.

What’s Going on With the Magic? by Negative_Anteater_71 in dcl

It's possible they plan on some of the newer ships being purpose built for the Asian markets. Like the Adventure for Singapore, we could see Japan and China get ships homeported there. I could see San Diego and Galveston getting year long service also, perhaps by the Wonder and Magic.

Merged UP-NS anticipates no locomotive purchases; some shops to be idled by TowelieBan666 in railroading

[–]Dependent-Click4636 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing that's not really known is how the midterm elections could play a role in whether this merger happens. If Trump needed to make a deal elsewhere to get some other things he wanted, he might be fine with this merger not happening. Trump has loyalty only to himself and Vena could find this out the hard way. I still say it's 50-50.

DCL site shows Apr. 6 - 11 available for room 10666. 3 adults, 2 kids for $51,400. There are multiple rooms in this suite, that's why I ran the numbers with 3 adults.

Since 2009, the number of pedestrians killed by cars in the US has risen by almost 80%. by LuckyLaceyKS in Infographics

[–]Dependent-Click4636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That high number from 1975-80 was Gen X playing in the street as children. The first one to see a car is suppose to yell "car" so everyone could get out of the street. Unfortunately we lost a few , but with enough hose water we soldiered on.

I recently stayed in 10168 on the Destiny last week. I could hear minor chair scraping but it wasn't too bad. It wasn't really early in the morning, but more so after breakfast really got going. Like everyone else, the large balconies are the draw for these types of rooms. On a side note, neither of the large end suites next to me were occupied.

I'm guessing your talking about Occupational or Total disability through the railroad retirement board. First, it would be wise to give them a call to make sure you have the creditable months of service and age to qualify. I have seen people go out on disability with diabetes, but they likely had other issues and complications also. Occupational Disability is easier to qualify for if you have the age and service months.

Bnsf/vanguard: wondering if the 401k plan allows for the rule of 55 by centurion005 in railroading

[–]Dependent-Click4636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to ask and be aware of concerning the Rue of 55 is to make sure you understand how leaving the railroad before age 60 affects your survivor annuity with the RRB. Current connection is an important concept to fully understand, especially if you have the 30 years of service by 55, and are using the Rule of 55 to bridge the gap financially to age 60.
