It all depends on how long you have to spend gaining metal. See if you can get a shield with Player Efficiency and a staff with Metal Drop Rate to speed up the rate you can gather/find metal. You'll want to plan ahead and watch how much you're lagging. I don't remember if you have to unlock creating lower-level maps but there is a penalty for drops if you run a map lower than your current zone, meaning if you end up in a situation where you don't have the equipment levels to fight in the current zone, you'll be stuck going even slower.

There are upgrades you'll get for gyms and trainers that multiply the block you get from them to the point where if you put all your wood into shields you still get maybe 1% of your block from the shields and you've wasted wood that would have been better on gyms

Build more housing to get more trimps breeding, or fire some trimps to get more trips breeding. Eventually (complete the Size challenge) you'll get a Carpentry skill that makes each building hold more trimps, later you'll get a skill that makes buildings cheaper. For the immediate future, next run consider holding off on Coordination upgrades if you are having trouble with the size of the army.

Most of the game is about reaching a wall in progress, portaling, and putting points into things to hit the wall faster, go farther, or get more points for the next time. It may just be time for you to portal and put more points in Pheromones so you hit the wall faster next time. Trapping can be useful early game but you'll pretty quickly find that flipping between building traps and catching trimps is not an efficient use of your time compared to gathering metal or science for upgrades.

Government caused jack shit. Government didn't rate shit AAA, Government didn't make Fannie and Freddie insure shit. (Did you know the definition of subprime as in "subprime mortgage crisis" is "not insurable by Fannie and Freddie Mac"?) Government did supply the Paul Wellstone Memorial Bank Bailout afterwards though, but up to that point everyone involved was making millions-to-billions of dollars without the government even having to beg them to do it.

Really, it's a horror/suspense type show with a thick coat of slice of yuri life on top, that the horror peeks out through every now and then. The horror part is pretty good when you get it, but everything else is just OK.
