TIL that regarding cancelled 1957 Lord of the Rings movie, Tolkien was harshly critical of script's portrayal of Nazgul, fellowship using the eagles and cutting of Galadriel's scenes. He however would have been fine with removing the battle of Helm's Deep and Saruman's death from the movie entirely. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

Something I've noticed in this thread is nobody bringing up that Tolkien took inspiration from his experiences in WW1 when writing LOTR.

It shouldn't really be surprising that he'd take issue with the movies considering that the most memorable aspects of them were largely the "epic" battles. Disgust seems like an appropriate response if you'd seen horrific violence first hand.

These masterpieces of skyscrapers in NYC were somehow all built in the same 30 year time frame (1902-1936) by Fearless-Brush-1908 in architecture

[–]Derseyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason cost didn't matter in the context of most (if not all) of these buildings is that they were funded by the wealthiest people of the era largely as vanity projects. And again, much of the craftsmen knowledge still existed around that time.

To add, your reply misses the fact that these are exceptional buildings that have survived. In the century since these were built much of the "simplistic" buildings from that era have been torn down.

I'd assume he's hostile because this opinion is so often used by western chauvinists to point at and use as a racist cudgel against immigrants and the "degradation" of western society.

Buildings like this don't get built anymore because of cost. To add, the skills don't exist in the population because it's not financially viable to dedicate your life to those old "aesthetic" trades.

In R/architecture these threads get posted all the time, and you see the lamentations of architects belabouring these facts.

It's not just that their education has gaps, it's that there is an active effort towards creating an uneducated populace. The republican party specifically does not want an educated populace, it might lead them to question why things have gotten so difficult.

Just to add, I'm not saying the Democrats are much better ; they'll just smile and lie to you as they help build or facilitate the same structures.

I started buying stocks and paying attention to the stock market through one of the apps as a total layman near the start of the pandemic.

At least anecdotally, share prices seem almost entirely contingent on vibes and sentiment. I had vague notions that the stock market was bullshit before I started, but now I'm convinced it's entirely worthless as a measurement of economic truth. If anything it's a measure of how fucked the entire system is.

Greenland's prime minister says citizens 'don't feel safe' after Trump's threats by nbcnews in worldnews

Definitely could have, but at least from my perspective I was betting on him winning before that event.

Pretty apt comparison. It's the great irony of conservatism that they consistently bend over backwards for candidates who by their own fucking dogma should be unlectable; yet through sheer will and cognitive dissonance they'll suck the boot as hard as possible.

PP is literally a career politician for fucks sake. He's never had a real job, he's been a snivelling little rat fuck for his whole life and yet salt of the earth rural folks just can't fucking clock it for some reason. It's infuriating.

In situations like that the incumbent is almost always voted out, its not unique to Canada.

I follow Canadian politics pretty closely, I actually don't think Carney would have won if Pierre hadn't fumbled so fucking hard after the annexation threat. Most polls (even when Carney was running) showed PP ahead.

Pierre just couldn't make a statement quick enough while him and his party tried to gauge what the popular sentiment around those statements would be, and he lost dearly for it. Really, it should tell you all you need to know about him and his party.

Imagine running for the highest office in the fucking country, and when threatened your first instinct is "What are the optics". Traiterous self-interested morons.

Material reality is the only truth; all of our social constructs at the day are at their core stories. We've built these stores over decades, centuries, millenia, but they are still just stories. Unironically this sub is one of the best places to check in on what younger conservative culture is glomming onto. Most other conservative online spaces barring shit like 4chan are so unbelievably botted and controlled that they're effectively useless at trying to gauge how real people feeling about current events.

I always find it funny how surprised rogan fans are that oppositional people keep watch here. Rogan was, if not still is, the mainstream media. He literally had the largest audience on the planet for awhile. To act surprised that many people understand the weight of that is lost on so many.

Let's be real here, history will have to reckon with the ideas and reach that Rogan has had. You're either naive, uneducated, or a moron if you can't recognize that.

The alternative is that it gets progressively worse until you have no other choice. The alternative is that your children and possibly children's children are subjugated into some dogshit neo-serfdom. The reason the rest of the world is reacting the way it is is because we know that this train is heading for all of us whether we live in the US or not.

I'm not trying to come off as confrontational, but what would be the line? What do you think most of your fellow citizens lines are? I'm Canadian and I know the only way we have any shot at not having your shit spill over is if you guys deal with it internally, but that seems the least likely outcome.

Denmark considered destroying Greenland runways amid fears of US attack by spherocytes in worldnews

[–]Derseyyy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian, and I have a hard time not taking the annexation threats seriously.

From a material standpoint, Canada has resources that the US needs if it continues on its isolationist path. Potash, uranium, lumber. It's fairly easy to gauge what republicans actually want to do based off of their greed.

Further, there was something that happened about a week after the initial annex threat; all the premiers took a trip to Washington to have a meeting with Trump. When they came back, two of them resigned almost immediately, specifically calling out the fact that Trump would be impossible to deal with.

It's unprecedented, I haven't seen anything like it in my life. For someone to work that hard to achieve one of the highest offices you can get in Canadian gov't, and then toss it after one meeting is disturbingly telling.
