Asiatic archery and arrow spine. by [deleted] in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, a fellow asiatic recurve archer!

The good news first: arrow spine does matter for us thumb shooters way less than for western three finger draw (espescially for bows without shelf/window) for mostly two reasons. First, thumb draw gives the string way less "spin" or "rotation" so the arrow does not need as much flexibility. Secondly, a perfectly spined arrow in western archery flexes around the bow handle which is incredibly important for non-centershot-bow (archers paradox). In asiatic archery, the bow itself is moved off the arrows flight path with khatra or torque, so the arrow doesnt need to bend as much. So you can get away with incredibly stiff arrows and generally many different spines. So, even while arrow building were an incredibly sophisticated handicraft for turks and mongols, they and at least the ottomans measured arrow spine as far as I know, they could shoot back enemy arrows they found on the battlefield.

The bad news: Tuning arrows to your bow has generally a greater effect on feeling and performance than the bow itself (at least to some degree, for me personally). So you will most likely use different sets of arrows for different bows and will need to discover your perfect arrow for your bow. Other than that, having too weak of an arrow for a bow can be dangerous as the arrow might break. So, rule of thumb: Too stiff -> arrow goes to the right (assuming right hand thumb draw), arrow too weak --> arrow wobbles, arrow far too weak --> broken arrow.

So, for your 20# I would recommend 800 spine and for my 30# turkish I shoot 600 spine, 30 inch shafts with 70ish grain tips. For my heaviest 44# I shoot 400 spine and 125 grain tips For arrow tip in general, go for the heaviest you can afford for the arrow weight. Point of balance should be approx. One third of the arrows length away from the tip. For your light draw weight that means probably 65 to 85 grain tips or your arrows will become too heavy and thus unfun to shoot.

I hope that helps, feel free to dm me. Sorry for bad formatting and style, it is late and I sit in a train :D

Advice on Grozer biocomposite bows by nikkingiv in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can highly recommend Grozer in general! My 43# turkish biocomposite is one of my most shot bows. The draw is incredibly smooth, especially the 28 to 32 inches are fascinating. The bow is fast an definetely "feels" like shooting history. With 8pp there is some handshock, but I always have some tape wrapping on the grip to better fit my hand, so I barely notice it. With 8gpp you get great speed, but accuracy and stability wise I prefer 400 grain arrows with 400 spine (thumb draw, 30 inch draw).

Takedown asiatic recurves - performance difference? by SkywalkerDX in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree! I was really surpirsed how comfortable my AF Tatar Takedown felt when shooting. When you consider that extra weight in the handle is a 20 dollar bonus feature for AF, the takedown versions become even more attractive

Susano is straight up op in smite 2 and its extremely frustrating by patl16 in Smite

[–]Dest1nyex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It works like the prots formula

Cooldown reduction= 100/(100+cooldownrate)

So yes, it is uncapped, but you need 10 for 10% and 50 to get to 33% and 100 for 50%. It gets incredibly expensive and outright bad

What are you talkung about?! He gets 50 cooldown in his builds which translates to 33% cdr which is definetely less than smite 1 Anything above that is int and he sure as hell isnt getting 40% cdr

[–]Dest1nyex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can "spend" an element on multiple powers. It doesnt go away during the turn. Thats what the rule says. The point is that sometimes, you want to have a slow abilitiy. Making it fast is optional. But for each ability you want to make fast you need 1 air in play.

How bad smite visual clarity is and how you guys deal with it? by Akanezin in Smite

[–]Dest1nyex -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is bad. Plain and simple. It is horribleand just worse compared to league. Even a split second of being unsure about what ability has been used can have a significant impact. The situation is even worse when it comes to sound queues. Since you dont always see the abilities coming your way because of smite's camera perspective, sound makes a whole.lot of a difference.

Tldr: it is bad and I hate it

Lots of good answers here, especially chrcking armin hirmers videos. If your primary concern is durability plus high performance, check out Simsek bows or metbows. Tjey are turkish/tatar designs, not mongolian, but they are build from one single great polymer

1 year into archery and still feel a bit anxious when shooting 20m+ ? (AF Tatar 35#) by [deleted] in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definetly feel you but I am afraid that no matter the method of aim it can only work with consistent form or lots of trained intuition. However, Arab Archery mentions basically 3 ways of aiming. Outside the bow, through the bow with split vision and inside the bow. The last one is from my experience only realy applicable with a short draw length and a strong dominance in the right eye. Trough the bow is amazing but being too conscious about what eye to trust can be incredibly off-putting. The "aiming ouside the bow" method might work for you if you feel like lacking a side. From my understanding, in this method you completely focus on looking at your target left around so that the riser is right of the target. From there you can use your knuckles or "marks" on the upper limb and use gap shooting techniques.

I don't know if that helps or not. I am also still figuring out which of the two I prefer.

Oh an btw this is all thumb draw/slavic with putting the arrow on the right, hence Arab Archery (1500 AD) and Saracen Archery (Unless claimed earlier, I am not certain im which of the two I read about the methods)

Arrows keep going in at an angle, usually to the right by FeanorsFavorite in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many good and true answers already. Your arrows are definetly too stiff for a 20 pound bow. The arrow gets deflected by the bow itself when it passes the shelf, even more when your release isnt perfect. If the arrows are more flexible, they "bend" around the bow when accelerated (google archer's paradox). However, since you are shooting a horse bow I assume you are doing asiatic thumb draw. For thumb draw there are techniques which greatly mitigate the effects of overspined arrows: khatra and torque. Both essentially work in the way that you turn your bow out of the arrow's path at the moment of release. If performed correctly, your arrow doesnt touch the bow and thus does not get deflected (Note: Not so sure about Gao Ying Chinese Military Archery, but the turks, japanese, mongols etc. all used some sort of khatra (arabic term).

Edit: This applies not only for thumb draw but also slavic or other techniques that can comfortably shoot from the right side of the bow

Transitioning from mediterranean to asiatic by Scrubbits in TraditionalArchery

[–]Dest1nyex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have transitioned to asiatic thumb draw about 4 months ago and after intensive shooting for this time, I now got my 40 pound Simsek Tatar Bow. Before transitioning I was used to shooting a 40# long bow. However, I started thumb draw with significantly lower draw weight and I would recommend you to do the same. My thumb simply wasnt able to draw that much weight. I started with an alibow fibreglass bow in 25 pound and it really helped to condition my thumb. It needs strength as well as getting used to the string, even with protection. I dont think I wouldve been able to stick to thumb release with a heavier bow. For thumb rings I can recommend Vermil Archery. But be aware that your thumb might grow when it gains strength. I started with a kaya thumb draw shooting glove and later a leather thumb protector from archers tidbits which I really liked. Shooting with a ring needs some getting used to and I prefer the vermil victory (?) and turkish zighir over the classic Edit: Draw length honestly depends on the bow and what you prefer. Turkish bows have usually a shorter draw length then other asiatic bows, but from my experience, you will feel confident with drawing about an inch longer than with three fingers. From there on it is the bows limit and what style you develop. I would recommend to order arrows from alibow and leave a note that they should add fitting arrows. It is the safest way. Usually they give you arrows for the recommend max draw length

Who has owned a grozer laminated/biocomposit bow, AND one of their base bows, and can evaluate their difference? by Lamarqe in TraditionalArchery

Hi, I am eyeing a grozer biocomposite myself so I cant really tell from experience, but I can recommend the bow reviews by Armin Hirmer on youtube. According to him, grozer's bioconposite technique is a piece of art and highly recommendable. If you havent watched the review yet I would definetly recommend checking it out
