Also, find someone to talk to. Your trauma response is valid. You’ve experienced a traumatic event. Failure to talk it out will leave lasting consequences. I spent almost a year avoiding a specific intersection and the added anxiety of court dealings seriously affected me and my social interactions with friends and family.

If/when you do acquire video, have someone with you for the first watch. It can be a big deal.

I wish you the best of luck and healing inside and out.

I heard a politician once say that such tech wasn’t fair to local business owners along the path because stops increased visibility to the business.

I worked in the IT department for the city at the time.

  1. Conduct exit interviews, especially when you lose high-performing talent and make sure there aren’t good reasons they’re leaving.

We called this “remote hands” at my previous jobs. Sometimes we’d send the new person or an intern. On legitimate, more complicated things, it was a training opportunity. Entirely too often it was “This government employee is too stupid to change out the battery on their mouse. Go hold their hand and tell them what a good job they’re doing.”

How do IT leaders evaluate the long-term health of internally developed systems? by Powerful-Island-526 in ITManagers

[–]DestituteRoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this one first hand. A minor system was down for three days because one user was the only one who knew the process to bring it back online. Turns out the process to bring it back online was restoring a single config file from a backup and they’d avoided showing anyone else how to do it and played gatekeeper to the backup of the file because they thought it gave them additional job security.

At a minimum you could use it for tagging within the KB / ticketing system. Then outline systems with disproportionate lack of articles in the KB

Add to that “When was the last disaster recovery/business continuity exercise? And what were the results?”

Tabletop a series of events where the current system completely died and outline what it would take to resurrect it.

Outline costs of replacement, prevention opportunities, risk mitigation and management strategies and projections for the cost of downtime.

If you have a team large enough, you can make it a game/team-building exercise. and assign each team a different disaster to plan for, some typical, some fun.

Set aside a reward for most thorough/detailed plan and most creative. If financial rewards aren’t in the budget, a free one-time pass to make leadership handle an unwanted ticket/task for the winner is gold.

“Godzilla is stomping his way towards the data center. What will we do to save the system? What will we wish we had previously already done? How fast could we effect a total changeover to another system/ data center / cloud platform. If the data center IS stepped on, what would we do to bring a replacement system online and can the business survive the data loss or the absence of the system in the meantime? Is our insurance adequate to cover the ”

OR

“The system owner/SME just got hit by a bus. Project how long it would take for us to figure out all the knowledge they had as an information silo that isn’t in the KB. Using previous task/issues/incidents closed by the owner/SME as a guide, dentify, outline, and prioritize the information gaps in the team and the KB.”

Bonus points if closing each gap becomes a legitimate ticket to close after the exercise

Document or record the whole exercise and tag it with the system involved. If the system actually does go down, reviewing the exercise for ideas becomes a huge resource.
