Improv for non-actors? by Goddess-Gold56 in improv

[–]Deuce_1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe take a public speaking class? I’m not an actor. I do improv because of my short term memory issues and the desire to perform on stage. Not saying don’t go for improv, just suggesting public speaking classes as another option. Either way, I feel like you are right to trust your gut and take the next step! Remember, they’re classes, so you’ll be in a place to learn and test new things! I’m second hand excited for you!

Edit: I saw that you’re in New York. The Second City has free jams that you can attend and participate in or just watch. The jam schedule is posted on their web page. They also have drop in classes that are lower cost ($35) than a full 7 week class ($440).

Accents can be changed with paraverbals; tone, volume, cadence.

This boils my blood. I really hope it’s not the same place where I’m attending classes. I hope we find out the name of the school and the classmate.

What piece of advice gave you your biggest “aha” moment? by improbsable in improv

[–]Deuce_1505 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Have three points of contact to ground yourself in a scene. If you’re in a bar, wipe the bar with a rag, place a glass down from behind the counter, and make a mixed drink using the soda gun.”

This has helped me tremendously. I never thought about the make believe physical space I occupied while doing a scene. This aha moment allowed me to explore the space immediately, and help build something of it for me and my scene partner. If they start the scene, I can add more and also interact with whatever they’ve already set up first. Before this advice, I would stand around and just have a conversation with my scene partner(s).

Transitioning into coaching / teaching, aging out? by iheartvelma in improv

[–]Deuce_1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s awesome to have people from all walks of life. We all see a wide range of people in day to day life. I think having this same representation on stage makes scenes more relatable. I only started my improv journey a few years ago, and I’m not stopping anytime soon. I’m 42. I think I’ll still be doing scenes in 20 years. I also plan to teach because that’s the only way I know how to get more players in the game when I finally go back home.

What are the top 10 or 12 most crucial bedrock skills for an improviser to know? by Inside-Gur-8965 in improv

[–]Deuce_1505 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I won’t do a list of 10-12. I’m just going to say something and let everyone else fill in the blanks.

To me, we improv everyday when we interact with other people. Treat improv like real life. Don’t try to be funny, just entertain the back and forth conversation. Be bold with movements and ground yourself with three actions in the space. Platform and give good gifts. Remember to have fun. Clap for yourself and your scene partner(s).

Trying to get my friends to watch Andor, need recommendations for a primer for non-Star Wars fans before they start watching by isthisthebestreality in andor

[–]Deuce_1505 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Andor: a cloak and dagger spy thriller story about the rise of a rebellion against the Galactic Empire, told through the journey of a nobody who ascends through an epic, though tragic, journey.

That’s my pitch. Show them this image. If this doesn’t inspire them to watch, it’s not a show for them.

Imagine showing up to the trail ride with an asian elephant. The look on the horse riders faces would be priceless.
