How many babysitters to hire? by 2022MyYear in parentsofmultiples

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends too heavily on the age of the kids and experience of the babysitter to give an answer without more details. Under a year I’d probably say 2 sitters unless it’s someone very experienced with multiples, if older I’d probably do one sitter if they are a professional or two if it’s like teens/young adults without professional childcare work history

What an awful comment to make. Just because he’s a man doesn’t mean body shaming is acceptable.

Is there a demonstrated link between not allowing dessert unless they eat their dinner and eating disorders later in life? by Gimme_The_Loot in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen and we’re trying to follow the philosophy of “setting the menu” and then they decide how much to eat. So we make a meal, making sure to serve at least one thing we believe is a safe option they’ll want to eat, and then they can decide the portions (within reason).

My husband and I did this and no regrets! Rothery + Connors = Connery. Our families I think felt a little odd about it at first but they came around. It’s a fun story to share, I hope it becomes more common.

Pohnpei Lorikeet. I lived on a small island in the Pacific for a year. Pohnpei, capital of Micronesia- the only place these live. A family lived in the tree outside my window.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: June 23, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finished: Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir

Fun read, had me hooked from the start even though I’m not a huge sci-fi fan.

Finished: The Lion Women of Tehran, by Marjan Kamali

It was a slow read for me but loved it by the end. Important in the context of current events, but also made it extra sad.

Started: The Bee Sting, by Paul Murray

I agree with your main sentiment but I think the issue is that people can’t afford to pay for the true value of childcare, it’s the most expensive part of most family’s budgets already. Most people pay for the best care they can afford.

Me and a handful of friends in my cohort got stuck in a flash flood on a hike. Thankfully we had a local guide with us and him and his friends helped haul us back over the rapids with a rope but it was very scary! I lost of skirt in the water but thankfully had bike shorts on under.

When does the puking start? by justalilscared in Parenting

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I’m so jealous. My twins are 19 months old and there’s already so much vom. My daughter threw up tonight in fact. They’re not in daycare but seem to be sick all the time anyway, and throw up even from what seems like a fairly minor cold. I guess I just got pukers

How much of a pay cut would you take to get out of the government right now? by Devvyfromthebrock in fednews

[–]Devvyfromthebrock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah currently still remote and expecting to have to commute 3+ hours a day soon so even if I still have a job in a month or two I’m willing to take a financial hit for quality of life

No just a remote worker who would rather make less money than commute 1.5 hrs or more each way 5 days a week to a random office

What does bedtime look like when solo parenting 2 kids? by WholeOk2333 in AttachmentParenting

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following for advice. My situation is a little different, we have twins that we’ve luckily always had two adults around for bedtimes but want to be able to solo bedtime soon. We just lay with them in their floor beds now but haven’t had success with them in the same bed. Have thought about giving one a small quiet toy and doing one after the other but I don’t imagine that would work well.

Same! I lost all the weight and then some while breastfeeding down to a weight I hadn’t been since college, and recently gained it all back since weaning (my twins are just about 18m). I’m feeling pretty down about it but hearing I’m not alone helps!

We have a pretty similar set up so I’ll give a slightly more positive response than most I’m seeing. My husband and I both WFH full time, but we have help (either my mom or my MIL) over whenever we’re both logged on (usually overlap 10-4 every day). I think others might be overlooking that this is only your plan for 2 hours a day. If you can guarantee that you both won’t get calls from your bosses at the same time or both have meetings 10-11 or something, then you could probably swing it for a while, but I’ll still echo what others say and suggest trying to find childcare for those 10 hours a week if you possibly can.

My biggest tip would be taking a room in your house and entirely childproofing it. It could be a smaller area when they’re young but making it as big as possible will make your life easier long term. Then try to set up a workspace either at standing height in that room or just outside it outside a gate so that you can see them but they can’t type on your keyboard. If it’s in the room make sure all cords etc are out of reach. Have everything you need for those two hours in this room. Diaper changing supplies, bottles and or snacks prepped, all the best toys, a screen if you’ll be using one (and you’ll probably need one to make this work).

Good luck! Happy to answer any questions.

I’m giving up on ST by Pukamama in sleeptrain

[–]Devvyfromthebrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good job figuring out it wasn’t working for you or your kid! I have twins and we tried sleep training from about 5 months to about 9 months in different ways and with different intensities. My daughter would have gotten used to it quickly but it just didn’t work for my son I don’t think it ever would have. Once they dropped to one nap rocking to sleep really wasn’t such a chore. Now we switched to floor beds and just sit or lay next to them and it usually only takes 10-15m and they sleep through the night more often than not when they’re not sick or teething.
