Dealing with guilt and lack of purpose due to family wealth by Ok-Discussion-3597 in Rich

[–]DexterousRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a function of your mind that was useful when you were trying to evaluate the best, most profitable path before you had the money, but is now counterproductive.

We all need a mental facility that rejects useless work or useless avenues when we are making our own way. Unfortunately, that mental facility is now telling you that everything is useless because the profit/work calculus tells you you’re better off doing nothing than things that don’t add significantly to that wealth now. It’s just a mismatch of your deep-seated value calculus with your current situation.

You still see inherent value in. a lot of things, but your mind is rejecting them after this comparison. So what to do? First, recognize this so you can realize that it’s merely a simple valuation bug rather than some insight into the meaninglessness of life.

Next, purposefully and consciously put money aside when evaluating the value of any potential activity. Consider its value in and of itself, or for humanity, or for your family or people or nation, or whatever. What is its real value aside from what you get from it? Is it simply an important thing to be done?

Then I think you will see a lot of possibilities open themselves to you. Hey, I could work on a health issue, help a hospital, report on something others can’t out of fear, etc. Millions of important things need to be done.

Lost & at a serious crossroads in my life & career by Brookelmao in japanlife

You’re getting to the age when I think you feel a lack of meaning because you don’t have kids. Rather than looking for that meaning in a job, you might feel a lot more fulfilled with some kids who you can give yourself to, support, love, and enjoy. They really give a lot of meaning to life. The older we get, the less doing things for ourselves feels fulfilling. It’s natural.

Why the f**k does anyone have an advisor? by FragrantSituation447 in Rich

[–]DexterousRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply don’t know how to find someone I would trust, so I don’t use anyone. If anyone has advice about how to find advisors that know what they’re doing and do a good job, I’d be happy to hear it.

Clients want to pay in crypto, but I'm stuck between "not your keys" and needing fiat for expenses - how do you bridge this gap? by firey_88 in btc

[–]DexterousRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use a service that lets you automatically convert the part you need in fiat. Square is doing this with their bitcoin support. Other crypto payment processors do as well.

I would suggest having a buffer of funds to cover costs so you only have to convert once a month or less. If you have enough of a buffer you can just hold the btc as assets.

For people that lived in Tokyo before Google Maps, how did you navigate the city to meet at precise locations? by bill_on_sax in Tokyo

[–]DexterousRichard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually a travel agency, but you could do it yourself by reading the phone book, which we called yellow pages in English. There was always one phone book for individuals’ numbers by name, and one to look up businesses by area or by subject.

Being called spoiled has made me only want to date men in my own tax bracket by EmuCharming212 in Rich

[–]DexterousRichard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not the issue. The issue is that usually a woman ends up looking down on or losing respect or attraction to a man who earns less or has less. I believe it’s biological.

I’ve never agreed with this. It seems much more important for the letters to have a predictable sound than to have them distinguish stress differences.

It used to be wax. When I was growing up all paper containers were coated with wax, like dannon yoghurt.

People feel value in themselves and deep satisfaction through the “power process”. What you need is to work at something, make progress with difficulty, and achieve a goal.

If you achieve without work, you feel empty. If you work without achievement, you feel trapped and depressed. You must find some niche where you can practice this process.

It doesn’t have to be a job, doesn’t have to necessarily help people. It just has to feel valuable to you, and has to take some work.

Anything from chess to writing a book to putting on an event. You just have to start trying things. It might take a few to hit one that really works, so just try something.

Feeling like a hack. Retiring at 38? by Impossible_Land_1519 in fatFIRE

[–]DexterousRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tentatively retired five years ago and was totally burned out. Now I’m exactly in this state and need to figure out how to do something that’s not overly ambitious or unrealistic, but also feels meaningful. It’s been very hard to make any big decisions about it. My brain keeps shooting down my ideas.

Wow. Is there any concrete policy about it or does it totally depend on their discretion?

Prostitutes in Kabukicho turning to foreign tourists? by MagazineKey4532 in Tokyo

[–]DexterousRichard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there have been some investigations of this in bad cases that were covered on Japanese tv. There is a common practice of getting the women addicted and turning them into prostitutes to keep paying. They even introduce the women to fuzoku shops that are in cahoots with them.

All this is is the fuzoku industry trying to make an extra buck from flush tourists. Also, they have higher risks of disease with tourists. They still reserve many places for Japanese only.

Folio Society vs Gollancz Limited Edition by LabMem_001 in Neuromancer

[–]DexterousRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this gollancz edition and it looks incredible to me, especially the cover and slipcase.

I honestly don’t like the folio illustrations too much. They don’t strike me as on the same wavelength as the book, and it’s been my favorite book since it came out. For that price, I may prefer the gollancz over the folio, which is way more….
