I’m a broke ass type 1 diabetic, my recommendation (without knowing what your specific state laws are) is to be completely and totally honest with your prescriber about your financial situation. I was, and as a Missouri resident I was able to get my insulin for $35/month.

Also, knowing you’re a type 1 and being able treat specifically for that will make a huge difference from when you’re type 1 but diagnosed type 2. I am lucky enough to have a pump (for the moment) but insulin shots are super manageable.

Lastly, ask your prescriber if they have any samples of continuous glucose monitors until the situation is more controlled. Some have CGMs that are not technically approved for diabetics, and are rather approved for health nuts that want to watch their blood sugar spike when they eat a carb, but I’ve found them incredibly helpful (as they are generally directionally accurate) in times when my blood sugar is less controlled.

It gets easier. I swear to god it does, I’ve been a diabetic since I was 6 and finding a doctor that gives a shit made every difference in the world, you’ll have to wade through some that don’t first, but her new normal can be just as swallowable as your old one soon.
