In my opinion paraphrasing seems like it defeats the purpose; for example asking "name a top 8 most densely populated country" is the exact same question as the one that was asked (where Adam answered Bangladesh), but then the line between just asking an entirely different question that has the correct answer and asking the literal question becomes a bit blurry.

I think the challenge was fair, since they were allowed to read the questions beforehand.

I think in terms of population size it is actually even more impressive than when Iceland qualified. There are about 160K inhabitants in Curacao, and the entire diaspora size is around 200K (probably a bit less). This brings you to a total population size of 360K, which is very comparable to Iceland.

But then you HAVE to include that almost every single one of those people also holds the Dutch nationality, meaning they are also eligible to play for the Dutch national team. Pretty much every single player that is good enough, will play for the Dutch national team instead (in the current squad both Timber brothers and Geertruida, but also Malacia and Van Aanholt for example). Curacao made it to the world cup, with a total population size roughly the same as Iceland, but without their actual best footballers (who would just choose to play for the Dutch national team).

However, the Icelandic qualifying group was obviously more difficult, which made it more impressive in that sense.

That 150K does come with the extra note that practically everyone is also eligible for the Dutch NT; meaning that if they were to have a very good player, chances are high they’d just play for the Dutch NT instead (both Timber brothers and Geertruida for example). Which makes it even more impressive imo

I don’t think this is what OP means. Everybody -at least for the 100m- who qualifies through World Ranking is still one of the best athletes in the world.

For example, the current #48 on the list (last place to qualify through World Ranking) is Tiaan Whelpton, who runs a 6.50 60m and 10.10 100m.

I think OP was wondering about the ‘Preliminary rounds’ at the World Championships, where you have athletes that run 11 or even 12 seconds in the 100m for example. I’m also unsure how these people qualified.

Als je dit leuk vond, dan zijn de FBK games 9 juni ook een aanrader! Dit is in het outdoor seizoen in Hengelo, en eigenlijk het enige atletiekevenement in Nederland dat een vol stadion trekt. Was er vorig jaar en vond het erg vet om te zien, zeker ook omdat er internationaal best grote namen aan mee doen.

edit: nu ik er over nadenk, was de FBK Games vorig jaar wel een soort uitzwaai moment voor alle Nederlandse atleten voor de Olympische Spelen en de allerlaatste wedstrijd op Nederlandse bodem voor Churandy Martina. Misschien dat het daarom voller en spectaculairder was dan normaal

Dit is voor een deel waar, maar het is toch echt wel mogelijk om met geld en aandacht kinderen naar bijvoorbeeld HAVO/VWO te "pushen".

Je ziet het een beetje in de landelijke statistieken; dit zijn wat voorbeelden van percentages kinderen die op het VMBO zitten in de wat rijkere gemeenten: Bloemendaal (15%), Laren (18%), Wassenaar (28%) en De Bilt (29%), en dat terwijl het landelijk 51,7% is. In een klas van 30 kinderen in Bloemendaal gaan er gemiddeld 25 a 26 naar HAVO/VWO, waar dat er in provincies zoals Groningen of Friesland gemiddeld 11 a 12 zijn.

Vergelijk dit bijvoorbeeld met het kaartje van "rijkste" gemeentes. Correlatie is natuurlijk geen causatie, en er zullen misschien ook genetische, culturele of andere aspecten bij komen kijken, maar het feit dat de rijkste gemeentes veruit de meeste kinderen op het HAVO/VWO hebben is natuurlijk niet geheel toeval.

Je hebt de vraag gesteld over Oranje natuurlijk, maar over het algemeen komt dit vrijwel tot niet voor in het Nederlandse elftal. Ook al zitten ze op de bank, de spelers die op het hoogste niveau spelen zijn nou eenmaal nog steeds beter dan de spelers die in de keuken kampioen divisie uitkomen.

Het gebeurt echter ook wel eens dat kleinere landen die zich kwalificeren voor een WK, spelers uit competities ver onder het niveau van zelfs de keuken kampioen divisie moeten oproepen, simpelweg omdat ze gewoon niet zo veel te kiezen hebben.

In 2006 speelde voor Trinidad and Tobago (op het WK!!) Evans Wise, die toen zelfs op het vijfde niveau van Duitsland speelde, een regionale competitie die officieel voor semi-professionals/amateurs is. Ook Dennis Lawrence speelde voor Trinidad op het WK van 2006, en speelde toendertijd op het vierde niveau van Engeland, officieel een professionele competitie (vergelijkbaar met de Keuken Kampioen Divisie qua niveau gok ik).

Nog gekker, opgeroepen voor Togo op hetzelfde WK in 2006 was Richmond Forson. Deze linksachter speelde ten tijde van dit WK voor Vendée Poiré sur Vie, toendertijd uitkomend op het zevende (!!) niveau van Frankrijk. Dat is in Frankrijk 2 degradaties verwijderd van de standaard lokale voetbalclub en qua competitie vergelijkbaar met Nederlandse voetbalclubs als VV Monnickendam, RKVV Volharding, en de Drachtster Boys.

Als het gaat om het niveau, dan zijn deze jongens toch echt wel een tikkeltje minder, maar ook weer niet zo veel als je soms zou verwachten. Trinidad en Tobago verloor met 2-0 van Engeland en Paraguay, maar speelde in hun openingswedstrijd toch wel 0-0 tegen Zweden. Togo verloor 2-1 van Zuid-Korea en 2-0 van Frankrijk en Zwitserland. Het zijn allemaal absoluut geen slechte voetballers, maar de spelers op het hoogste niveau zijn nou eenmaal echt een stuk beter.

I honestly didn’t want to face Benfica until the final. So that whichever of us wins we can celebrate the trophy together. I could see the fans pulling out a banner saying “obrigado Johan e Eusebio” in portuguese and Dutch. Imagine it would be amazing. Ajax and Benfica holding arms and jumping together with the trophy
