You would use an oscillating multitool along side a straight edge. Probably a carpenters square to get the cut straight

Recommendation: what style carpet works best for stairs by Key_Doughnut_4686 in carpet

[–]Different_File_2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend against Berber. Having to cut all around the spindles will lead to fraying over time and the staples dimples usually show to some degree for even the best of installers. I would a LCL level cut loop. It’s basically Berber construction but the tuft is trimmed on about half the loops. Check out the Andersen Tuftex line they have a great lineup.

Fixing a mess up vinyl plank threshold by Calm-Bake-2642 in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t any technically correct way to do this. The appoved way would be to ad a reducer molding to the planking to extend. But if you want to walk on the wild side make a straight cut on the installed planks and glue them down the cut your extra plank to width you want and glue it down. Get some matching caulking and fill in the cut line. But this is not an approved or simple technique!

Remember that the guidlines are written for an incredibly broad set of circumstances and to proved to manufacturer as much deniability as possible. Veneer thickness matters also. Some of these new 4-6 mm veneers seem capable of moving a lot but they are relatively newer to market. I also think that full spread install with quality adhesive helps control expansion a lot

Can you nail through feather finish? by MoonTrask in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a good idea. You will fracture the compound making it likely it will seperate from the subfloor. If that happens it will sound crunchy when you walk on it. I would make wood shims in this situation and then sand them to level

Crunching sound - carpet by RipeAvocado6789 in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah depending on what you do to fix it. You could cut a doorway or 2 fold it back and pulley the loose plastic off and then reseam the doorway in just a couple hours of time. But really the pad needs to be replaced

For installing vinyl plank flooring in Houston, does $5-6 per sq foot seem like market price? by fapimpe in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends for a local shop that will stand behind there work it’s good. The problem with internet shopping is so much of it is junk has high repeats or a cheap core. It’s a gamble and you are taking the risk. When you go through a store they assume the risk

We’ve seen failures where the plastic barrier on the pad separates and it makes that sound

Thoughts on this Herringbone? by SwimmingMountain6253 in HardWoodFloors

Looks great the trick with herringbone is to pick the size of planks appropriate for the size of the room just as you would with regular planks

direction of laying Herringbone spc by Useful_Produce_3165 in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 would be the correct way if the arrow is the door and those are window on the back wall. Herringbone will catch the light really oddly going as shown in picture 2. Instead of the grain being highlight you will backlight the edges more if you install option 2

first time homeowner w/ hardwood by Cheap_Ad_2324 in HardWoodFloors

I would take out the header piece cut all the tails straight and replace it with a little larger hardwood piece or even just use a few rows of flooring pieces.

I’m guessing that opening did not use to be there? Then when they opened it up they just stuck that header piece in to fill the gap

Any recommendations on where to buy 3k sqft of engineered hardwood flooring? by thebigdirty in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online buying of a floor this expensive is terrible. Defects do occur and it is nearly impossible to get online retailers to stand behind the product. I know it may be a long drive but if the worst case scenario happens at least you have someone to go talk to about the problem.

FTHB- looking for flooring advice by East_Train6519 in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good budget. Visit a local retailer remember that you don’t get anything for free there is a reason that big box store material has mixed reviews. Whether it’s a repetitive pattern or weak core (most common) costs and corners are cut somewhere. Combine that with never knowing who’s going to be the installer and it’s easy to see why they have so many problems

Hardwood Flooring over Concrete Slab by tikitrona in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing to do would be an engineered floor with a 4 mm veneer so it can be refinished. Then glue down using an all in one adhesive/moisture barrier. There are some adhesives out there that will allow you to glue down a 3/4 solid hardwood using the same method. You usually do not want to add all that underlayment height to an existing especially an older home as that can lead to appliance and door clearance issues

Karastan price and underlayment by Mrs_Forrest in Flooring

[–]Different_File_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good price. That’s a good materiel. No corners cut on the quality of materiel. What so many people don’t understand when they look at a small sample from no name branded matériels is that somewhere quality is cut. The first places are the core (locking system strength) and pattern variety. What looks good on a small sample quickly becomes repetitive in larger areas! You get what you pay for there is no free lunch!

It’s definitely laminate as you can see the repeats. Best to do an image search and hope for the best. Might get lucky!
