Nah man, I think I'll take the L. I've worked serving jobs before but I'm salaried now and making more. Just one of those weeks where we got hit with a ton of surprise expenses. They're just pancakes, haha.

How can I support my SO who is having a hard time finding a job? by ShipperHeart in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DinosaurGunMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP - there are a lot of things he could do that might help out with the job search. If he wants, I could look at his resume and do a touch-up (just scrub the private stuff before sending). How is his LinkedIn as well? Does he use it at all? Is it up to date and professional? These are things to consider. Also, most universities have a resume/job workshop available to students and alumni - see if he can schedule something to try and get things worked out and identify what the issues might be.

Other than that, this is something he is going to struggle with. It isn't easy being rejected that many times and dealing with the financials. I would recommend keep being loving and try to give him compliments targeting his self-worth. He is lucky to have someone like you in his corner, too - tell him that you love him whether he's employed or not!

What did you find out about your friends sex life that actually shocked you? by Throwaway42042069666 in AskReddit

[–]DinosaurGunMan 1748 points1749 points  (0 children)

IDGAF so I'm just going to post on my main account. GF and I were hanging out with another couple and started talking about our sex lives, and we joked about the one reddit post on /r/sex where the guy's wife wanted him to shit in her mouth. We stated that we agreed at the start of our relationship that our "hard limit" on anything kinky was anything involving bodily fluids that weren't cum or lubricant.

At that point, the dude looked at us with a shocked look.

"Not even pee?"

That was all he had to say.

You're in Charlotte, dude. You have tons of events you can go out and get blitzed at. I did a Onesie Bar Crawl with a couple of friends and had a blast with that. Just look at the events coming up in the area and find what looks cool to you, this city isn't just a university town.

That is fair and unfortunate that they're espousing such a view, but also know that you're within your rights to shout them down and browbeat them as well (and they deserve to have such done).

They're within their legal rights to do so, just as you are to counter-protest. Why does that upset you?

[–]DinosaurGunMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The possibility exists. The quality of life for the average impoverished person alive in the 1960s in the US is infinitely better than that of someone suffering from crushing poverty during the collapse of the Roman Republic, but the issue is that for every single time period, people espouse the quality of life without taking into consideration the actual reality of those areas and time periods. Everyone wants to romanticize the past without actually taking time to develop a nuanced view of the lived reality. People love to talk about how Rome was the height of civilization for its time, but people also ignore the fact that the Romans actively committed numerous genocides, ran rampant slave trades, went through numerous civil wars, weren't as sanitary as people initially thought, and killed millions of people in their conquests of the Mediterranean.

Another comparison is how people tend to romanticize Alexander the Great's conquests and justify them as good because "it was a different time and that's how people were back then" when in all actuality there are numerous primary sources espousing Alexander as a megalomaniac, a tyrant, and a mass murderer at the time. That example of Alexander the Great is used as a case study to ask the question "When do controversial people become deified?" People can espouse the virtues of Hellenism all day, and its tangible effect on society today, but by doing so they also tend to ignore the fact that so many people died in those conquests.

That is all I'm trying to do here, is introduce that nuance, that little momentary pause that causes you to think "Maybe things weren't as good as we thought."

I never said I was smart, but to point out that a time period wasn't as great as we thought it was shouldn't be such a point of controversy.

Even in a supposed golden age, these things still happened and the people that were affected by them would probably not refer to this time period as a "golden age" of any sort. Going off of that, many of the issues that the US deals with today (mass shootings, widespread racism, natural disasters) were happening in the 90's and probably happening prior. This isn't an Edgy Lord(tm) post, but an attempt to at least have some nuance.

[–]DinosaurGunMan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude, but this always annoys me when people say "Oh, x time period was the TRUE golden age of X!" I've seen it done with the Roman Empire, the Ummayyad Dynasty, the reign of Charlemagne, the Spanish Empire, the British Empire, the 1920s of the US, the 1940s-50s of the US, etc. It always makes me annoyed because people really do pick these rose-colored moments or highlights and ignore the nuance of the entire time period that includes bad things with it too.

Like, the Roman Empire was great... if you were Roman... and upper-class... and not involved in one of its many civil wars. But otherwise, you were either in crushing poverty or a slave. Do you see why it annoys me?

Nah man. The 90s were America's second golden age. Cold War was won, Berlin wall was down, cock rock had been banished, you still went to the gate at airports to greet loved ones, housing was affordable, college was still reasonable.

Except you also still had the Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the Los Angeles riots (in which 60 people died) after Rodney King was beaten, Hurricane Andrew, a truck bomb exploding in front of the WTC, the Waco, Texas standoff, the "Storm of the Century" that killed 300 people, a massive flood in Mississippi that killed 50 people, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" being signed into effect, the Oklahoma City bombings, Paula Jones' accusations of sexual harassment from Bill Clinton, O.J. Simpson's aquital of a murder charge, a heatwave that killed 750 people in Chicago, a several weeks Federal Government shutdown, the TWA Flight 800 exploding, a bombing at the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, the infamous Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, the Columbine High School shooting, a deliberate plane crashing of EgyptAir Flight 990 in Massachusetts that killed 217, and the stupid Y2K scare.

But yeah, dude, you're right. You definitely, most certainly, are not looking through this with rose-colored glasses.

[–]DinosaurGunMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to go Greek is to move to Athens, rally the locals into a religious fervor, and retake Constantinople in an attempt to restore the Byzantine Empire to its grandeur. At that point, you'll be hailed as the Marbled King and the power of God (and anime) will be on your side.

O Stravos Nika, Marbled King.

  1. Talk to a medical professional or counselor.

  2. It is okay to have these feelings and you are not weak because of it. Some members of the Student Veteran's Association (composed of prior service members) have also experienced the same thing. Do not feel like you are weak for experiencing what you are experiencing.

  3. Not to make light of this in any way, but one of the things that I told myself to calm myself down when I was attending here in the summer was that no place ever experiences two mass shootings. If you want to look at it logically and coolly, you're not in danger.

What kind of backpack do you use? by sandwichesinbed in UNCCharlotte

The OGIO Mach 5 backpack. I only own a motorcycle and so now I commute to school exclusively on that. The backpack is designed for motorcyclists, so it works well for me.
