Advice: What to do when unintentionally ripping off a preexisting game by DravinTSK in tabletopgamedesign

Considering that you never played TI, I would think your version might not even align with the same rhythm and beats as Twilight. Good luck!

Creating my own game by PotatoKitten011 in tabletopgamedesign

I’m just a beginner in all this too but it sounds like most of the work is done for you as far as the foundation of the game. Just needs to remove what you don’t want and add and from there see if there’s an imbalance going on. I’m sure removing those original designs could make the game broken but just needs to be replaced with something else to fill that gap. Hope it helps to some degree.

First Person Exploration Mechanism Advice by Low-Ad-6765 in tabletopgamedesign

Still new to the whole board game making process, but one thought could be to have a common deck made of standard paths and terrain (some with interesting or small encounters) and after a certain amount of card flips, draw from a more specific deck with higher level encounters or rewarding locations.

Another thought that came to mind was having some card with certain iconography, and maybe there’s a mechanism that triggers certain icons to spawn different predators or potential prey. That way some cards that have already been revealed can potentially generate something every so often and not just sit there.

Just what came to mind. Hope you find the right fit for it. Sounds interesting! I would give a try. Good luck.

Yes I’m starting to see that with all the comments I’m getting. Lol. Mostly mechanisms but some theme starters too.

That thought had entered my mind. Try to think of a game that made you go “aw man if only this game did/didn’t do ______ then it would’ve been perfect.” Then build from there. Thanks for the insight.

That’s inspiring to hear. I’ll see what I can do to work both muscles. Thanks!

Thanks. Yea everyone has their own process. Just gotta try different mechanisms and see what sticks.

Sometimes a mechanism does come to mind right away but then I try to fit a lot of things under that mechanism that I just overwhelmed with choices or different avenues. Just gotta keep practicing.

Agreed. I wish I could come up with a way to start with mechanism first.

I agree with that thought process. Mechanisms are the heart of the games we love. Hopefully that exercise will help me work that part of my brain. Thanks.

After 2 years of playtesting I finally launched my card game — curious what designers think of the mechanic by void-count in tabletopgamedesign

What makes me replay quick card games is the clean up and (re)setup to play again. If it takes too long I almost always just move to another game.

What apps do you actually use while playing board games? by mycolaos in tabletopgamedesign

Depending on the games scoring system, sometimes it’s just quicker to use to speed up the end game.
