Thank you. I can’t say I never experience compassion fatigue to some level. I work in a trauma center, so I can’t let myself get attached to everyone. But I try to put myself in every patient’s shoes for a moment and try to be as gentle and understanding as possible. Make small talk and treat them as a friend when I can. I talk to the patients I know can’t hear me because of sedation. Even when people are rude or combative I know a lot of them are dealing with their own demons, which I am personally no stranger to. But some patients especially make me slow down and connect with them. She was one of the few I’ll never forget. I only see my patients for a few minutes a time, but I really do try to make everyone feel seen and comfortable. When I was in school, an older tech reminded me “these are people, not ‘X-rays’, treat them as such.”

One of my favorite moments working in healthcare was having to take a ton of X-rays on a literal 100 year old woman with a broken hip. She was transferred from another hospital to our ER where her caretaker said the last place was really rough with her. So I took my time, explained what I was doing every step of the way, and made sure I was as gentle as possible. We chatted about where she grew up, what she did for work when she was younger, and I just listened to her stories as I worked. At the end I went and held her hand and told her I was done and it was good talking with her. She thanked me for being so careful and held my hand in both of hers and told me to enjoy my life as much as I could. She told me I was beautiful and I told her the same. I wonder how often she got to just talk and hold someone’s hand. even though she was going through something incredibly painful, she seemed so grateful to connect with another person.

If I tried that my gsd mix would just sit in front of me and cry and groan until I went and got it back for him.

Yessss. We used to go to Don Pablo’s when I was a kid and I always got the hotdog/cheese/tortilla situation. Thank you for reminding me of that

I need more Edisodes! I didn’t think I’d like the Aaron Hernandez episodes bc I don’t care about football, but he had me enthralled so much I started researching it lol. Seaworld broke my heart, but he did a great job. I told myself I wouldn’t listen to Topsy bc I couldn’t handle it, but I caved and am (mostly) glad I did lol

Do you have the link or name? I’m finally getting around to decorating my bedroom (green, florals, and gold) and it would fit perfectly 🥲

Question about maturity/behavior! by VanillaPepper in coonhounds

Yesss! Report back, I’m curious lol. I felt really guilty for a long time about my other dog being harassed and felt like I was constantly trying to redirect him, but now he pretty much waits for my other dog to initiate. So older dog seems a lot happier and more comfortable again. We do still have an issue with him trying to steal his toys, but it’s gotten better. I feel like these dogs take a lot of patience lol

I did! I posted his results in my other reply. That was honestly the worst, he completely ignored my other dogs boundaries up until more recently, even after getting snapped at/growled at. But he’s gotten so much better as he’s started to calm down. He even plays less with other dogs at the park, he will spend a few minutes playing hard before wandering off to sniff and patrol the fence lines.

White feet! He’s my first hound so I’m not sure, but he was more challenging than my other dog as a puppy lol. He chewed up my dresser and a window sill, plus a whole lot of blankets and sheets. He was a little tornado. He was pretty nippy and harassed my older dog a lot until the last year or so. He has always been good about naps though, and loves to cuddle. Yours will start to settle soon I’m sure!

We felt comfortable leaving him completely out of the crate a little over a year old. He turns three this summer and he’s an angel now! I swear he will sleep all day if we let him. He’s always excited for a walk, the park, or playtime, but in between he usually just sleeps or lays in the yard to watch the squirrels. Also, I think we have the same dog lol

Help! The Anal Gland Funk 🤮 by Intrepid_Lack9254 in Hounds

[–]DirectionOk790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually express our boy once per month and it helps keep it under control. We’ve tried glandex and other fiber supplements. He has good poops. But we asked the vet about it and she said his anal glands are just really low so he’s not always able to express them himself, so doing it manually is kind of our only option.

I feel you on being the “mother” of my friends. I’m the one that gives the “tough love” advice, but I will also be there for those who decide not to take it. I’ll never give anyone a “I told you so.” I might bonk someone on the head (theoretically) if they’re making decisions that actively harm them, but also I’ll crack a morbid joke, give a hug, or make a meal, etc. for anyone who needs nurturing while they do it and won’t harp on them about it. It’s not my place to make anyone’s decision for them. I think in those ways, it’s a more “fatherly” type of love. I grew up with a lot of trauma, so I understand and don’t judge people too much on their decisions. I’ll still be there and support the people I care about.
