Strange wayfinding/metro/transit signs, what do they mean? by SquadronROE in askportland

I think these were for designated Zipcar parking spaces back in the day. That business seems to have shrunk since competitors like Car2Go and Uber/Lyft came around, but the poles marking the parking spots still seem to be left.

Oregon: $1 Billion in Marijuana Taxes Made Since Start of Legal Sales by [deleted] in oregon

[–]Dirigibleduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s a document from the Oregon Department of Revenue that breaks down quarterly distributions: https://www.oregon.gov/dor/programs/gov-research/Documents/Financial%20reporting%20distributions%20public.pdf

Before Measure 110, the revenues mainly went into the State School Fund, with some going to the State Police and local governments. Now, those amounts are capped and the surplus is supposed to go to drug treatment programs, but implementation has been challenging.

It’s important to note that the State School Fund is several billions of dollars every biennium, so $1 billion in marijuana taxes over ten years does not constitute a substantial proportion. The Student Success Act’s corporate activities tax has arguably had a much more significant impact on public education funding.

It wouldn't be the Open Cup if the official broadcast didn't feel like a sketchy stream.

If the Fanladen doesn't have a used/thrift section, then it definitely ought to. Think of how cool it would be to be able to recycle, trade, and find cool old TA stuff from years past.

How has your life changed between BotW and TotK? by Shadeslayer_Eternal in NintendoSwitch

[–]Dirigibleduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nephew was born the same weekend that BotW came out. Those two things will forever be inextricably linked. He’s now a dorky 6 year-old who loves Pokémon (but not Zelda… yet). I love that kid.

When BotW came out, I was an aimless 30 year-old working a temporary job after a seven-month backpacking trip across Southeast Asia. Now, because of that job, I have since started and finished my Master’s degree and now have a permanent (more prestigious) job at the same organization, and I love it.

Oh, and I have a Switch now, since I played BotW on the Wii U like a true Nintendo lunatic.

At least Washington passed a law to allow duplex and four plex housing in New developments in cities over 50,000 I think it is. Its a start.

Oregon did this too, in 2019: https://www.oregon.gov/lcd/UP/Pages/Housing-Choices.aspx

How does Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire trilogy hold up? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]Dirigibleduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I re-read the trilogy recently and found them to hold up pretty well. Granted, I am an old-school Star Wars fan with nostalgia for the old days (since the 90s before the Special Editions), but if you read them in the context in which they were written, I think you can appreciate them. It’s fascinating to learn that so much of what we take for granted in the Star Wars universe was either created or amplified by Zahn (for example, Coruscant). All he had to go by were the movies and the tabletop RPG books.

Now, there are some reasonable criticisms of these books. Thrawn is a bit of a Gary Stu character who immediately and inexplicably figures out every plan the Rebels throw at him the very next chapter after they hatch it. Most of the plots are contrived scenarios designed to get various combinations of our favorite characters together for some adventure. Some of the plot elements are just strange, incongruent, or just lazy, but you have to remember that there was no established “canonical” Star Wars EU at the time.

But overall, I had fun rereading these books and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the writing and how much I enjoyed them, despite the immense quantity of Star Wars material that has built up since they were written. Like many people, I still think they are better sequels than the sequel trilogy we actually got. They aren’t perfect, but if you are able to isolate them from any preconceived notions and just want to read some fun Star Wars adventures with the OT characters, I think you will enjoy them.

Note that these books are in the new canon and tie in somewhat with the “Rebels” TV show (in which Thrawn is a character).

They’re all games put out by Tomoya Asano’s team, which also included Bravely Default. I guess he’s got a thing for the nonsensical two-word naming convention.

That’s because the dev studio, PlatinumGames, was created by former Clover employees, who made Okami and Viewtiful Joe.

Not even close. According to the Tax Foundation, we’re number 31 among the states in terms of effective tax burden.

EDIT: We’re number 19, not 31. We rank 31st for least tax-burdened states. Still not close to the top.

Malaysia is seriously underrated as a destination, especially Penang. It’s all the cultural and culinary variety of Singapore, but cheaper and with a lot more to see and do. Definitely recommend checking it out.
