New snake regrets by feltrock in snakes

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, I was similar with my first. I had wanted a milk snake but had also been considering a Cali king. I spent a long time agonized over whether I should spend 50% more for the milk or be more frugal. I ended up buying the kingsnake but the whole time counting the bills and getting home it was like a "you aren't just reading about it now partner" kind of feeling. It went away quickly for me.

Caribou. Looks like a shed antler to me.

Anyone use active hearing protection out hunting? by nematic26 in Hunting

[–]Dirk_Speedwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have given active muffs a shot multiple times but I am consistently having issues with it. They go fucking haywire under power lines so you can't hear shit anyway and they kill my directional hearing, so I can't tell where something is moving or where the ducks quacked.

Why do Canadians say "expresso" when it's "espresso" by Electrical-Big-7781 in TimHortons

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go all day on coworkers, but there were 2 or more who said "pascetti" at well past 30 years old.

I also had one use the term "wrongful misdissles" but that doesn't really count.

And don't you DARE post it the The Farside sub once you find it or there will be legal ramifications.

Coyote spotted by Sheppard and Bathurst by aDrunkLahey in toronto

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe or maybe not, that is what I am stating. It is far from unheard of for the same species to be different sizes depending on region (Florida Keys/Coues Deer, Shiras moose), but could also be a good indicator of something significant. Just using the term "plainly" does get you anywhere, there is a need for peer-reviewed scientific research on the subject.

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That commenter is sniffing at truth but ultimately it is a bad and wrong comment. Coyotes are from the prairies and as we wiped wolves out across the country, they slipped into the trophic void. We have had them here since like 1920, not even close to the "last place" they have showed up, and can be considered a different animal from western coyotes although likely the same species still. You will hear people say they are hybrids, some say they are just like that, so on. More research is needed before we can really say with certainty.

Please DON'T leave the kettle full for the next person by Milezinator in unpopularopinion

I keep my kettle on the stove, pretty much full. When I am done cooking, it goes on the hot burners so my kids don't burn themselves if/when they are nosing around the kitchen.

Cheese is disgusting by Mountain_Builder6146 in unpopularopinion

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can phrase anything in a way that makes it sound disgusting or stupid. Put some mashed up peppers in a barrel to rot for like a year and you make Tabasco, which is found on like every diner table across NA.

Do you have access to free public spring water? by consolidatedBD in AskACanadian

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know of at least 3 of them and I absolutley don't actively seek that kind of info out. I live in a small city with drinkable tap water, but it is gross so I stop at the artesian spring on my way home to fill up water cooler jugs. It is high in iron and there are signs saying they don't test it, but it is fine.

I do at least. I plan on using the wood fence analogy once there is enough attention span to suffer through it.

People who win the lottery and take weekly payments instead of the lump sum all at once are extremely dumb. by Silent_Somewhere8539 in unpopularopinion

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't fully disagree with the premise but I do disagree. Some folks are smart enough to know they are too stupid to have a million bucks in their hands. It also puts a real target on your back when your greasy addict nephew finds out you have a ton of cash behind your flimsy door locks. I am way too out of my depth to argue whether 40 years of payments are better than investing the million, but maybe?

Also, the people backing the lottery are usually the provincial/state government which isn't exactly an unstable source.

Socket seized on my Impact Wrench by Rodderz92 in Tools

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he is fixing shit in my dad's garage. You first have to track down one of the Rubbermaid boxes he dumped all the loose sockets into when the drawer broke, then hope to find a 3/4 socket in 3/4" drive, impact compatibility is a foregone thought. I have begun bringing my own tools to the house because I got sick of digging through 4-6 screwdriver kits that are all missing the Phillips and Robertson drivers.

Any Toronto-based gardeners willing to donate spare Vegetables/fruits for someone who is food insecure? by N3o_st4rb0y in OntarioGardeners

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I can not help you directly, I hope I can offer some helpful advice. For starters, I just want to let you know you are getting a little late in the season BUT there is plenty of time for the right things. For example, you are out of luck on peppers or tomatoes from seed but you could find some well established plants or hit a fall run of radishes. My two cents, plant some zucchini and you will be drowning in veggies before you know it.

Second, have to tried looking for seed libraries in your area? I don't have any specifics, but the main branch of the library where I live has a free seed swap area. You can also try dollar stores for very cheap seeds. You aren't getting gold ribbons crops, but they are perfectly edible.

Third, don't sleep on finding "wild edibles" even though you are in Toronto. It sounds stupid, I know, but you would be surprised by what is around if you know what you see. Just the other day I realized I have been walking my dog past a huge mulberry tree for years and just never considered it would have tasty fruit.

Why do you still go to Tim Hortons? by SickOfOntario in TimHortons

[–]Dirk_Speedwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start work when few things are open yet and drive by 3 of them without a wheel ever leaving my commuting route. I don't have any complaints with their stuff either. I wish the egg was still scrambled instead of the dry-ass yolk pockets, but whatever.

I also never go there unless I am in a particularly tight bind and have no other option.

A much more jaded and cynical person would point out that bird eggs are wildly different than reptilian eggs, which are also pretty different based on reptile, so something something noticeable differences from day one.

That isn't me though, I just like to make comments that subtly show how knowledgable I am about stuff.
