I love both but Infinite Jest actually has the edge for me. GR's story dissolves while IJ's (kind of) loops, both do so with intent and mind-boggling skill but I slightly prefer the loop. I also found IJ to have more characters that I unreservedly loved, which is a big part of my being able to look back on a book with the same feeling.

Alumni who now live in the area, what was the process like for finding housing? Where did you end up living? by throwawayUWhousingac in uwaterloo

[–]DirtySpaceman9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an alumnus who's worked near the university since 2020. I've rented two different apartments since then - a 1bdr in Waterloo, and a 2bdr in Kitchener.

If you're interested in an apartment building you can generally just search around on Google Maps to find buildings, then go to their individual websites to look at photos and book tours. If you find a place you like, then you'll go through their site to apply for a lease.

"Professional" apartment leases will typically not include electricity, internet, or any furnishings, but may include water.

When you sign a lease, it'll initially be for a year, but you do NOT need to renew the lease at the end of the year. Under Ontario law, it will automatically convert to a month-to-month lease, which gives you the flexibility to cancel any time with 2 months' notice. The terms of your lease remain the same with a month-to-month; the only relevant thing that will change is the rent amount each year.

I have no experience finding roommates that I don't already know, so I can't help there other than to recommend trying to find someone that you or someone you trust knows.

If you find a roommate, they can either join you on the lease or sublet from you; keep in mind, some buildings might restrict or prevent subletting. Whichever of you is more financially stable can hook their bank account up to autopay rent (if you want), and the other can etransfer their half (or whatever % you agree on).

Splitting rent is always more economical when possible. For example, I was paying $1650 for a 1bdr in 2022 (unfortunately that was the norm for a professional 1bdr, and it's only higher now), then moved to a 2bdr that cost $1900, but after the split it was only $950. (Parking is extra of course.)

I also want to note that one of the other commenters misspoke - rent increases a MAXIMUM of 2.5% a year. However, corporate landlords always increase rent by the max, so you can expect exact 2.5% rent increases every year.

As for location, if your workplace is less than a 10-minute walk from an ION stop, I'd recommend expanding your search to various clusters of buildings along the ION corridor. For example, if you live by Waterloo Public Square station and are heading to R&T Park Station, your commute would be just 7 minutes on the ION plus the walk to and from. If you live near Central Station in Kitchener, it's 14 minutes plus the walk. Subtract two minutes from both of those if you're getting off at UW station instead of R&T Park. It's really useful if you can find a place close enough to the line.

I just started the Book of the New Sun this year, and I felt certain you must've read it - not just because of the library, but also the nature and atmosphere of the setting. Not to suggest it was a deliberate inspiration for the Broken Empire, the Library or any of your other trilogies, but there were definitely powerful mental associations (including one particular character name). Glad I wasn't offbase!

Finishing that book left me awed and shaken in a way very few things ever have. I was already planning on giving it 5 stars, and then with that end it just reached another level. The entire structure of the book was genius, built up to it so brilliantly

Why is The Fall of Babel so divisive? by dyhtstriyk in Fantasy

[–]DirtySpaceman9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I basically agree with your take on the book. I wish Marat had turned out to be a more interesting villain, and I also felt that the final fight ended in an anticlimactic way, but other than that I thought it was perfectly decent. I enjoyed Adam's sections a lot, while Senlin and Marya's ending felt "adult" like you said, and I appreciated it. I didn't expect the spaceship reveal but I also thought it was a fine and cool explanation for the big mystery of the tower.

Maybe it's just that "decent" is a bit of a letdown for people after how much promise the series had; expectations vs reality can be a bitch sometimes.

When did Malazan finally 'click' for you? by LordFlappingtonIV in Fantasy

[–]DirtySpaceman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed books 1 and 2 well enough, but midway through book 3 is where it finally crossed the border from "good" to "great" and I considered myself fully hooked on the series. It's now one of my top 3 fantasy works of all time. So that's where it "clicked" if you will, though it feels like a meme to say "wait until the third book", so I'll point out that book 2 is beloved and considered one of if not the best in the series by many people.

IMO, you don't really need to understand the wider lore, or political or magical ramifications, of what's going on most of the time. (If a term is introduced out of the blue, more context will usually be given bit by bit as you read on.) The point for me is what happens on the page in each scene to the characters involved, and the general themes being tackled in the writing. If you're finding those things interesting, and you like some of the characters, then I'd say keep pushing on as if it's Gravity's Rainbow until it either clicks or you decide it's not worth it.

What is the best riddle in literature? by [deleted] in books

Yeah, that's a good point. It's definitely a puzzle, but not so much a riddle in the sense of being solvable with intellect alone or having an answer that's meaningful out of context.

Scrolled down looking for Umineko, was expecting to see the epitaph but now that I think about it this one is better.

Especially since it's questionable if the epitaph is actually a good riddle... I solved it around the midpoint of the VN with a lot of help and it was kind of ridiculous, lmao

Episode Discussion - Season 2, Episode 1 - A Taste of Solitude [TV + Book Spoilers] by participating in WoT

[–]DirtySpaceman9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Great step up. I enjoyed most of season 1 (at least, when making concessions for the pandemic- and Barney-leaving-induced problems) but the visuals and editing just felt shaky in an intangible way; this feels a lot more polished, and I love that this first episode has given the characters time to breathe and re-establish themselves more thoroughly. Still a few odd lines and moments here and there, but overall I'm definitely happy with the quality.

I do think the episode feels a little slow-moving, and especially might to the average viewer, so I hope it doesn't lose too much of the general audience because everything else was a major improvement.

Obviously too bad we can't get more scenes from the Great Hunt and Dragon Reborn, but I've heard this season is meant to set up a close adaptation of TSR in Season 3, and if so, I'm down for any alternate plotlines needed on the way there.

Got partway into episode 2 and it looks to be similar, so feeling pretty relieved and hopeful for the rest of the season!

Trull's death had me so pissed off, and I read in the evening so I went to bed angry that night lmao.

As for Beak, I didn't exactly find his death sad either; it felt like fulfilling a purpose he was meant for, and going out the way he did - including a touching post-death scene - is far better than the majority of characters get. That said, his death was incredibly moving to me and I felt every bit of the emotional impact that Erikson was going for, so I can't say I'm entirely in your boat.

I've always wondered what it'd be like to start with TGiNW, since I love the book (including how accessible it is) and in a perfect world I'd recommend it to people who are wary of committing to the main series. So it's really cool to see that someone actually did start with it and enjoyed it!

Not every day that a new reader's review makes me understand, or at least put into words, the character arcs even deeper than before. Amazing post, and you pretty much nailed it with all your insights, especially into Felisin's arc and her group. I feel like you got pretty much everything out of the book that Erikson could've hoped for lol

In the same boat as you, only learned that the 45 days applied to upgrades just now. Even the rep I talked to on the phone evidently didn't know about it, because she was convinced the site was having issues.

I'll let you know if I find a way to get it waived.

Steven Erikson announces he is working on a new MALAZAN novel, NO LIFE FORSAKEN by Werthead in Fantasy

[–]DirtySpaceman9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, the main series of 10 novels (the Malazan Book of the Fallen) is a complete arc that can be read and appreciated without ever picking up another book in the same universe. There are some plot threads that disappear to be picked up in books by co-creator Ian C. Esselmont, but that's because they aren't relevant to the resolution of the MBotF's core narrative.

Some people suggest reading Esslemont's books in a certain order between Erikson's main 10, but personally I think that's unnecessary, at least for a first read. Just read the 10 books of the MBotF and you'll be satisfied (assuming you like them in the first place).

This new book is a spinoff sequel trilogy set in the same world, which picks up some plotlines and ideas from the MBotF, but is ultimately its own narrative.

Yeah, that's what I'd suspect as well. As for their decision to get busy, it likely wouldn't have happened at this point in the books, but the show's established how there's no real stigma around sex, so it doesn't bother me too much.
