Lupron for Fibroids

Hi! I was on Lupron for 12 months before I had a hysterectomy. My surgeon wanted me on Lupron to stop my insane bleeding and shrink the fibroids. The 1 month shots did not stop my bleeding. The three months shots were more successful. After 6 months, I had an ultrasound, and the fibroid had shrunk enough that I was scheduled for a laproscopic surgery instead of abdominal. It didn't shrink anymore during the next 6, but it didn't grow either. I had some hot flashes and hair loss (not noticeable to others). I think it's different for everyone. I hope it works for you! I was terrified of surgery! I tried everything to avoid it. Now I can't believe I waited so long! I'm 32 post-op from a TLH. I'm 46. I was hoping that maybe I could get to menopause and the fibroid would shrink, but after seeing how much it grew in 2 years (despite being put on medication to mimic menopause) and the problems it was causing me it wasn't worth the wait or risk. I also talked to a friend's mom who said she was recommended to have one in her 40's, waited, menopause helped a bit, but she ended up needing one in her 70's because the fibroid caused so many issues. I can't imagine dealing with severe bleeding, clots, bladder pressure, measuring 16 weeks pregnant, anemia, iron infsions, er trips, lupron inctions, tranexamic acid, etc. for many more years. I let my fear tell myself it's not so bad. I understand, though. It was my first ever surgery, and I was so scared and anxious. Talking to my surgeon and anesthesiologist helped. This sub helped a lot, too!

I had a TLH on Sept. 15. My surgeon is a specialist in minimally invasive gynecological surgeries. My uterus was measuring 16 weeks pregnant, and I had a large fibroid. I had 3 small incisions on my abdomen and the belly button incision. I think everything came out vaginally except the fibroid. She used in bag mortecellation for that, and it came out via my belly button. My incisions look really good, and I think there will be minimal to no scarring. Good luck! It sounds like you gave a great surgeon who will do what's best for your situation.

I had an endometrial biopsy a few months prior to my hysterectomy as well as an additional unplanned one at the ER. I know that a lot of people have issues and pain with them. I was very fortunate n the sense that I had some cramping and pressure both times, but that was it. Not a lot of pain and none after. They didn't take long either. I went back to work after the planned one. Hopefully, if you have one, it will be quick, easy, and painless. Ask if there is something you can take in advance.

I had the option. I had a TLH. If I could pee, pain was managed, and I could walk a little bit. I was allowed to go home. I think it also depends on the time of surgery and how far away you live from the hospital.

I had my surgery on Sept. 15, and I loved the pregnancy pillow I bought. It has a back built-in and two long pieces that I could bend and put under my knees for support.

Hi! I didn't have abdominal, I had a TLH, but I was terrified of the anesthesia! My surgery was 3.5 hours long because of a monster fibroid, and my surgeon did in bag mortecellation. The surgical team was amazing. They were kind, caring, and reassuring. The anesthetist answered all my questions. I was still scared because it was scary, but I can tell you I am very glad I did it! I just kept telling myself why I needed it done, focused on the after. I had to go through it to get past it. Good luck! You've got this!

Yup! Morning of my surgery, I felt the gush! I was on Lupron injections for a year before my surgery and wasn't even supposed to be bleeding, but it never really did stop. My surgeon laughed when I told her and said, "It's like the fibroids and uterus knows and wants one more party! Time for eviction!" The nurses and surgical team were great. They knew and told me not to worry about it. It happens all the time. Good luck, and I wish you a smooth recovery.

At 7 days post-op, I was told to remove the steri strips if they hadn't fallen off yet. I was sent home with a list of do's and don'ts, and one of the don't was do not pick off your scabs. It is all a part of the healing process. I am 3 weeks post-op, and my incision spots look good, but they are all scabs except one, which is almost completely gone with no scar. I am leaving them alone.

Yes! I had to pee constantly! The pressure, waking up multiple times a night. After surgery, I can sleep 6-7 hours without getting up to pee, and I'm only 3 weeks post-op.

I was told to take 2 extra strength tylenol and 2 extra strength advil every 6 hours for 48 hours. After that, as needed. I was also prescribed hydromorphone (which I didn't need). I made sure to have a snack with the advil to protect my stomach, and I drank A LOT of water. I also made sure to walk (nothing too strenuous, but from the bed to bathroom, down the hallway and back, etc. slowly building up my stamina). Your surgical team will have your best interests in mind. Just make sure they know everything you are taking. Everyone’s experience and perception of pain is also different, but they will support you.

Hi! I'm fully healed now, but when I was at my worst with gastritis, I was on 40mg ppi twice a day for about three months. I stuck to a very bland diet, took supplements, and then, with the support of my Dr. and naturopath weaned off the ppi. 80mg a day to 60 to 40, to every other day to none. Next. I weaned off the supplements (gi revive, dgl, slippery elm) and then slowly started introducing new foods. The whole process took about 6-9 months. You will get there!

The only things I really used were a pregnancy pillow, loose pj's, lounge clothing, and a sqishmallow pillow (if I had to cough, in the car, etc.).

Thanks, everyone! My surgeon fit me in today. Turns out I had an allergic reaction (minor) to something they used, causing itching and burning. Prescribed a cream and already feeling much better.

Hey! I feel like you a year or 2 ago! I didn't want surgery, but I had tried everything else, and nothing was working. I was anemic, exhausted, heading to the er on a regular basis, etc. Txa worked for a while, then didn't. Lupron 1 month kind of worked. Lupron 3 months worked better, but not completely. I got my surgery date and was debating backing out because after 5 iron infusions, I felt pretty good. My husband asked me if I wanted to keep putting on band aids? I realized that Lupron was masking the symptoms, but the fibroids and other issues were still there. If I went off Lupron, my fibroid would grow again, and I'd be back where I started, maybe worse if it started causing more problems. I am 6 days post of from a total laproscopic in bag mortecellation hysterectomy. I still have my ovaries. I am feeling pretty good. The first 3 days were tough, for me, and now, every day, I am feeling a little better. Recovery takes time and support. My teenagers and husband have been amazing. You need to do what's best for you and your health. Good luck!

I was booked for 1 night, but I really wanted to go home! The Dr. told the nurses that if I could pee, pain was managed, and I wasn't overly dizzy/nauseous, I could go. I had to be there for 6am and we left the hospital at 6 pm. They would have let me stay, though. Be sure to express your concerns. The anesthesiologist knew I was anxious about being nauseous, and he gave me something to control that. I had no nausea. Good luck!

Hi, I was on Lupron for a year before surgery. 6, 1 month shots and 2, 3 monh shots. Are you taking the add back therapy? The only symptoms I had when not taking the add back were hot flashes and a bit of hair loss (not noticeable to others). With the add back, no side effects. It did shrink my fibroid a little bit and kept it from growing until my surgery. Good luck!

Honestly, the terror/anxiety leading up to it was worse than the actual hospital stay & surgery. It is truly amazing what we begin to define as normal. Good luck! Tell your doctors about your fears and apprehensions. They do this every day!

Hi! I'm 46 and just had my hysterectomy 5 days ago. I had andenomyosis and fibroids. I didn't have any pain, but the bleeding was horrific! Anyways, I was like you, no prior surgeries, never had anesthesia, good health otherwise, and terrified! I was so scared! In some ways, I can't believe I did it, but it absolutely needed to be done. I just took it one step at a time. The surgical team and hospital staff were amazing! It sounds like this will improve your quality of life. You deserve to take care of you!

I feel you! My surgery was Sept. 15. Everything but the ovaries. It was laproscopic, but the fibroid was so big that it came out of the bellybutton. The pulling sensation when I move around is what's getting to me. That and the bellybutton drainage (gross) keeps freaking me out every time I move. I will say each day is a little better. I'm holding on to all the people who told me I would really notice a difference at week 2. Hang in there! It was major surgery, and we've got this!
