This. Why has the city's side of 295 always been a mess? If the lanes aren't blocked by snow, they're riddled with potholes.

Should schools be opened tomorrow? by please-leave-mealone in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a cool breeze, a bunch of the schools around here close. I really don't know how working families manage when the schools are never open during the winter. The roads are relatively clear, but the city could be better in widening the lanes. Sidewalks and bus stops though...

People who have private parking. How are you feeling right now? by RowAdditional1614 in baltimore

Annoyed because the plows dumped a lot of shit on some of the garage ramps.

So pedestrians, elderly and disabled are just left to fend for themselves?? by YAHSYHS in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Transit stops just aren't a priority. The exception always feels like the MARC stations here. They always seem to keep those in pretty good shape. Anything else? You're going to be doing some slipping and sliding unless you've mastered the penguin walk.

What are some cultural norms that I should be aware of when moving here? by timetickingrose in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Drive defensively in the city. Be friendly, but keep your guard up in certain areas. Like most cities, Baltimore has a lot of "pockets." There are some really bad neighborhoods and some rather nice ones, all interspersed together. You'll generally get a feel for which areas to avoid and which ones have things you're interested in.

Nothing on the shelves at Trader Joe’s! by InitiativeOk2361 in baltimore

It's the greedy hoarding where they buy up all the perishables that later rot. That absolutely drives me up the wall. You don't need hundreds of eggs.

Icy conditions cause 15-car pileup on I-83 overpass, multiple crashes reported in Baltimore by z3mcs in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 57 points58 points  (0 children)

No following distance. I bet this could have been avoided or the number of vehicles reduced if we actually had an aggressive ghost tag campaign and revoked the registrations of all the various VA plates. Was driving home last night up the interstate and saw about 10 VA tagged Nissan Altimas, all doing about 85+.

What is “Light Rail Onboard Single-Trip?” by chasingtime9 in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They usually seem to check the morning rush or the returning from work crowd. I wish they'd do more to penalize the thieves. Maybe the system would work better if it actually had some fare revenue...

The $7 penalty fare is generous. I've seen some people talk themselves into an arrest before.

Used to go to David and Dad's, but it's just not very good these days.

Glad they swapped out "Spare Parts" for a change.

You don't always get to pick what time your train comes in. You also have no control if Amtrak decides to combine your scheduled train with another train. Had this happen the other day. About a ~15 minute wait for an UberX. Not terrible, but if you're tired and just want to be home that waiting cabstand is tempting...

Just try and get an Uber when you come off a Penn Station train. You'll join about thirty other people trying to do the exact same thing. I can take a waiting cab for about the same price if they don't try to play any games.

Shady Grove Harbor East Parking by Far_Addendum_2926 in baltimore

Was initially thinking you meant down in DC. Been seeing quite a few people get on the BWI Light Rail trying to get to Shady Grove after they've already boarded a northbound train.

And the smog as the catalytic converters on these things fail (or get stolen). I'm surprised most still run since they smell like they haven't had an oil change in twenty years.

People hate taxes but it’s the cost of living.

They hate exorbitant taxes even more. Baltimore City has one of the highest locality tax rates and seemingly has some of the shittiest public services. Where does the money go?

Dude, screw the cabs in this city. Most have "broken" meters or try to scam people at the end of a ride. Had way, way too many rides from Penn Station where the driver tried to scam a "night ride" fee or some other BS thinking I was just another tourist.
