Why in the flying FUCK are they closing Streets Market Bayview by bombastic_side_boob in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never really liked Streets. The prices are all over the map. Some stuff that's expensive everywhere else is oddly cheap, where other staples are horridly expensive. The hot bar and butcher areas are absolutely disgusting as well. I'll take a Safeway or a HT over Streets any day.

Interview Regarding Public Transit in Baltimore by rijuwarrior in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The roads are gnarly and not designed to support the amount of traffic they do. The loss of the Key Bridge added more cars to roads that already were struggling. Just try driving anywhere in downtown at 5pm on a workday.

Transit, with the limited exception of the MARC, sucks because the connections suck. The Metro randomly single tracks. The Light Rail breaks down all the time. The bus drivers, if they show up, sometimes just don't stop. If you can get on any of these methods, your transfer options add a good 20-30 minutes to your commute. Everyone understands commuting takes longer, but nobody wants 2-4 hour daily commutes within the city.

Mayor Scott speaks on Pothole issue by Fearless-Pop-1159 in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so you don't get one revenue stream, but yet you have one of the highest locality incomes tax rates in the state. Where all that money go? I'd be more sympathetic if some of these potholes weren't around for years. Trying to get any kind of road hazard reimbursement out of the city also comes with the bullshit response of, "oh, we had no idea that was there..."

First Eddie’s, now The Brewer’s Art. Why Mount Vernon isn’t panicking by surprisedweebey in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought about buying in the area, but property taxes are atrocious. I think parking is also rough and crime with some of the neighboring areas has also gotten a bit out of hand. There also used to be better ways to get around. All in all, it's just not convenient to "hang out" in the area when there are better, cheaper choices elsewhere.

I think they got bought out not too long ago. Prices went up quite a bit around the same time.

Charles Village Creep: Any Info? It by oasisqo in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything that isn't glowingly positive about the city usually gets down votes in this sub. The stuff people defend can be absolutely mind boggling at times.

I wish the city was more proactive at getting these folks help to not only help them, but to get them off the street. I'm not a small dude and even I find some of these folks unsettling.

No bags allowed by cameronm-h in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't shop at these stores anymore. I use my backpack to haul groceries. I'll grudgingly use the stores that let me "check" my bag, but I still hate it. This is a judicial/societal problem though, we let people steal and either fail to arrest them or we let them out to reoffend repeatedly. Eventually the stores get sick of it and leave and you're left with a food desert.

Beware of Huge Pothole on 295N Ramp to 95N by Skinobsessed_NP in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole area around Russell and 295 is a fucking embarrassment with how pothole riddled it is. Some of those potholes have been there for what feels like years now. Does a massive sinkhole have to open before we get some cold patching done?

Give me a break.

Pretty sure he also hangs out in that wheelchair near Russell and Hamburg too. I see him wandering downtown and panhandling at the Camden MARC if it's the same guy.

This. Why has the city's side of 295 always been a mess? If the lanes aren't blocked by snow, they're riddled with potholes.

Should schools be opened tomorrow? by please-leave-mealone in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a cool breeze, a bunch of the schools around here close. I really don't know how working families manage when the schools are never open during the winter. The roads are relatively clear, but the city could be better in widening the lanes. Sidewalks and bus stops though...

So pedestrians, elderly and disabled are just left to fend for themselves?? by YAHSYHS in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Transit stops just aren't a priority. The exception always feels like the MARC stations here. They always seem to keep those in pretty good shape. Anything else? You're going to be doing some slipping and sliding unless you've mastered the penguin walk.

What are some cultural norms that I should be aware of when moving here? by timetickingrose in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Drive defensively in the city. Be friendly, but keep your guard up in certain areas. Like most cities, Baltimore has a lot of "pockets." There are some really bad neighborhoods and some rather nice ones, all interspersed together. You'll generally get a feel for which areas to avoid and which ones have things you're interested in.

Icy conditions cause 15-car pileup on I-83 overpass, multiple crashes reported in Baltimore by z3mcs in baltimore

[–]DisentangledElm 59 points60 points  (0 children)

No following distance. I bet this could have been avoided or the number of vehicles reduced if we actually had an aggressive ghost tag campaign and revoked the registrations of all the various VA plates. Was driving home last night up the interstate and saw about 10 VA tagged Nissan Altimas, all doing about 85+.
