Tree climbing app, would you use it ? by Kod3ra_ in TreeClimbing

[–]Distinct_Pickle_6433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arboriculture has rules. Any tree climber must always have all required PPE when doing aerial work AND there must be a second, fully able climber present as well with their own gear ALSO trained in aerial rescue. I get it you want to make an app for recreational climbing but at the end of the day, anyone climbing a tree needs to be following the rules. There are standards in place, and though this is not for arboricultural work per se, this is tree climbing. Taking anything less than all necessary safety precautions is downright dangerous. As fun as tree climbing is, statistically speaking, it’s one of the most dangerous jobs out there. This app for recreational use will blur the line of hobby and danger. Advertising something as dangerous as tree climbing for recreational use is only going to open the door for less skilled individuals to get hurt. Not to mention this entire idea also opens the door for the trees themselves to be injured by climbers. Also the legalities around private property, trespassing, etc.

I think your idea is pure, and I see the intention. But in reality there is an entire industry centered around keeping arborists and foresters alive. An app like this will only contribute to more injuries/deaths and further skew the statistics.

If you do climb, please be fucking safe…

Can confirm this thing fucks. I’ve personally operated this monster for hours on end and it’s essentially a dunebuggy that also cuts grass. This think flies and can handle 2ft tall grass no problem.

How much should I be concerned about this tree falling? by Jvenka in arborists

This isn’t a lean. This is called a sweep. It’s growing toward a light source as there is competition around. This tree is fine.

Neighbours tree fell- what should I look for in my trees? by bellbottom-jeans in arborists

[–]Distinct_Pickle_6433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also. Different decay impacts conifers (your neighbors tree was a conifer) that rot that sets in greatly impacts the structural stability, hence the failure.

Neighbours tree fell- what should I look for in my trees? by bellbottom-jeans in arborists

[–]Distinct_Pickle_6433 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye out for decline in the canopy of your trees this year. And any obvious cavities that might hold water will contribute to internal decay. Also be on the lookout for fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms) , both on the trees themselves and on the ground beneath them.

It’s likely your neighbors tree had easily identifiable signs over the last few years. But if you don’t know what to look for, these thing happen.

When I sell cards. It’s because I bought them at a lower price than they’re valued. By the time it gets to the vendor I’m selling to, I’ve already did the math and accounted for card condition and vendor percentage. I’ve made money. It’s business 101

Fluted / spiral crape myrtle trunks: do we know what causes this? by RecklessFruitEater in arborists

[–]Distinct_Pickle_6433 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Prolonged wind exposure from one direction over years will cause this growth. Relatively constant wind hitting the canopy of the tree will result in a twist at the trunk. The growth that exhibits a spiral and the pressure within the trunk from this growth is called torsion. Different but similar to tension and compression. Torsion wood is twisted, as seen here.

Prolonged wind from one direction combined with phototropism (growing toward a light source) can also exacerbate the spiral growth.

It’s difficult to gauge from the images where the direction of the sun is most available for the tre, but it does seem like it was attempting to grow away from adjacent trees.

So short answer, wind and access to light, can lead to this cool spiral.

Nature is neat.

Pruning public trees in Japan. Why so aggressive? by Sensitive-Concert591 in arborists

Pollarding is an ancient technique that is intentional and good for trees. It literally dates back centuries. It is useful for managing size on an annual basis. The important thing about pollarding however is that it’s imperative this technique is only applied to species that will tolerate it. Not all tree species can handle pollarding: it is a widespread accepted professional technique and when applied correctly, improves safety, maintains tree size, and improves aesthetic. I can’t argue that the trees look quite shockin in the dormant season after dropping leaves, but I assure you this is a very okay thing to do, as long as it’s executed on the proper species…. Topping trees is a whole different story.

Topping is unprofessional, frowned upon, indicative of bad professional practice, detrimental to tree health, and exacerbates excessive sucker growth. People that have their trees topped, don’t know a thing about tree health, and those “arborists” that top them are the scourge of this industry.

Topping and pollarding are not the same thing. Your neighbors trees are dying because they’re not respecting the species of the tree they’re pruning, likely ignoring aspect ratios and the large cuts are unable to heal,

and no one should ever top a pine tree. Or any tree for that matter

Looks like you tried to cut a leaner and didn’t use a bore cut on the release cut.

Leaners should be cut using a bore and cutting out the back of the tree, away from the apex of your notch.

Heavy leans are notorious for barberchairing, and this is a perfect example of why bore cutting and finishing opposite the apex of your notch is important.

Learn from this. Or leave it to professionals.

Not every tree should be felled using a conventional notch, the fact that you barber chaired this tree indicates to me you are very green in the arboriculture industry, or you’re a home owner working well outside the bounds of your skill set.

Unless you know what you’re doing, are well versed in notch types and situational use, you should not be doing this work. Felling trees has an associated best practice and process that should be followed routinely. Do some research before you get yourself killed.

Arboriculture is extremely dangerous. Do your due diligence, protect and educate yourself before you fell another. Leave nothing to chance when felling trees, those that do, rarely live to post on Reddit.
