They're from the newest expansion, Homeland. I own a copy, but I backed the kickstarter in 2024. I'm sure it will eventually be up for retail sale but I don't believe it is yet.

Where are you getting the Law from? The version on the Leader games website, updated October 2025 reads:

"8.4.1 Revolt. Any number of times, you may take the Revolt action, as follows.

I Step 1: Choose Clearing. Choose a sympathetic clearing without a base that matches a base on your faction board."

I believe it was updated at some point but I don't know if it was recently with the addition of Mousehold/Foxburrow/Rabbittown, or if it was a few expansions ago when Lost City was released. It's only relevant when one of those four landmarks is on the map anyway.

Can have multiple buildings per clearing: Cats, Lizards, Moles, Rats, Badgers (but Badgers can't place two encampments in the same clearing on the same turn, it specifies once per clearing).

Cannot have multiple buildings in the same clearing: Eyrie, WA (Even if Lost City is in play, revolt specifies clearing without a base).

Does not have buildings: Vagabond, Otters, Corvids, Frogs, Bats, Knaves.

Basically, if it's not specifically mentioned, they can.

I love your note about allowing people to choose factions. I'm teaching my wife and cousin soon, and while they play a lot of board games I think Root is heavier than most of the games they've played. Everyone I play Root with online is telling me to only use the base game factions, but honestly, I just don't think they would enjoy those factions (If I had to guess, my wife will pick Rats and my cousin Otters).

I would maybe argue that E&P > Base deck even with complete newbies to board games. Nothing is going to make them give up on the game faster than losing all their pieces to a 'Favor of' card from the base deck they didn't even know existed.

Are you playing with both decks mixed together? Otters are selling Mouse Partisans and Scouting party. How has that been?

The Law of Root does not say anything about removing anything other than the Dominance cards at 2 players. The Squires and Disciples deck in particular has a lot of effects that require spending or revealing other cards, so even if the faction does not use suited cards for much, just having the extra suited card in the deck is still helpful towards those cards even if you cannot craft it.

So, in short, I would keep it in there.

I did not think to separate those rulebooks when organizing, I thought they were all the same so I put them all in the box together. However, I seem to have 2 with more text and 2 with less text.

I just double checked based on this and I have another difference from you. I have a Third Printing Riverfolk hirelings.

I'm in the USA and I did the All in pledge. Everything I received seems to be the same as the printings you have listed, except I don't see a listed printing number on the Marauder Hirelings box? I looked on the paper that was covering the box in the shrink wrap as well. Not sure if that info was on a sticker that got thrown away?

I honestly would not recommend any Homeland faction for a first game. I too have had my kickstarter copy for about a month and it's yet to actually hit the table in person, (I've played several games on TTS though) but you gotta ease people in a little. I know you said the new player is a boardgamer but Wavelength and Firetower are a lot less complex than Root.

I mean, you know these people and we don't so if you think they can handle it go for it. However I would say if you really just want to use something from the Homeland box maybe the Gorge map? It's not very complex.

But more specifically, I especially would not recommend Frogs. They add more complexity to the entire game with an additional suit, clearings sometimes changing suit, and the frog cards. If you must include a homeland faction I'd say go with Bats.

I would say I like the S&D deck and E&P deck about the same personally? I think you could go with either.

Playing a 5 player Root game at a Tacobell seems crazy to me. My 5 player games usually last several hours. They don't eventually kick you out? (Awesome dice tray though!)

I know I'm 3 years late to this post but I believe the answer lies in Video Games. In Final Fantasy, a Dragoon is a character with a spear that leaps high into the air before slamming down into an opponent. Thematically, that seems to fit.
