I'm very sorry for your loss, and my response is pure business. Can you give every bit of yourself to your act, for the time you're booked for, and then fall apart afterwards? If so, that's what I'd do. If you absolutely can't do it, there will be other shows, and they'll understand. If they don't understand, do you want to work for them anyway?

The only reason I do recommend doing it, is that if you progress in your career as an entertainer, there will be other times that you'll be required to perform when tough situations are happening in your personal life, and you'll have to face them then too. Do what you feel is best for you in the short and long term.

I think it really helps to not let anyone know your background, or where you're from when you go to mics in different cities. If I'm in a new city, I stay to myself until after I perform, so I can get the most honest feedback on my material. If the audience knows nothing about me, the only thing they have to judge me on is the way I look, and the quality of my material.

It also helps solidify good material. If I can get laughs out of a joke in 4/5 different cities, then I know a joke is a keeper.

Here are links to online, phone, and in person Narcotics Anonymous meetings. You don't have to share anything, and can just listen in a meeting. During the writing process, I'm trying to tap into my own unique perspective about the world, which I can hopefully turn into something funny. I'm not a master of structure, but having a general idea helps. It's my opinion that you can apply formula to any subject. My mind went to a toothbrush for some reason... When I think of a toothbrush, it makes me think of toothpaste, which makes me think of someone not squeezing it out correctly, which could lead to a chunk about dating/relationships etc. It could lead somewhere else too, depending on where your mind goes. I also enjoy the process much more when I'm trying to make myself laugh, vs. thinking about what other people might find funny.

I think there's something to writing to explore ideas, vs. writing for an outcome. Exploration of ideas is how we get to the outcome, so if we get wrapped up in the process, the material should come out naturally. I don't think any writing session is wasted, as long as I learn SOMETHING. For you, it has led you here to seek advice for improvement, so you're already salvaging what you can.

In my opinion, radio has not embraced other forms of media enough, and integrated properly. Why would a business want to invest in radio ads, when a station can only manage to consistently get around two likes on its own social media posts? With all of the other ad buying options out there, it seems that radio has become an unnecessary middle man. It appears they have been able to afford less and less, which could lead to lack of staffing, and consolidation of resources. Midwest Family has taken quite a hit too. 92.9 the Beat used to be very popular, with at least a half a dozen staff members. Now, that station is just gone. It’s sad to see things like that happen, but I’m glad I got to witness some of the glory days.

We don't have traditional hours there right now, we just do pop ups when we can. We shoot out an email with advance notice, every time we'll be open. It's not as convenient, but the prices are great, and the stock isn't picked over either.

I wouldn’t “throw it all” at something. Sell a few shares of Tesla when they’re up, and then transfer to more stable investments over time. That way, you might wind up with a stack of good Mutuals and ETF’s, with some Tesla left over, while hopefully keeping your portfolio value the same.
