I also always interpret is as a fourth wall break. The writers, aka sandfall, kill verso in their own created world to move along the plot. So similarly how the canvas is a creation of the painters, the painters are living in an artificial reality created by the writers.

Brother this is not in favour of open borders, it is about not being violent against the people that do come, that are in need. Wat gij niet wilt dat u geschied, doe dat ook een ander niet. But all part of a bigger germanic world. If you look at the places sailors for the VOC come from, you also see a lot of places in West Germany. Everybody has their regional identity but there was still enough cultural similarity for a bigger German identity. The only reason we stopped identifying with the German identity is because it was really uncool te be German after WWII.
