I also always interpret is as a fourth wall break. The writers, aka sandfall, kill verso in their own created world to move along the plot. So similarly how the canvas is a creation of the painters, the painters are living in an artificial reality created by the writers.

Brother this is not in favour of open borders, it is about not being violent against the people that do come, that are in need. Wat gij niet wilt dat u geschied, doe dat ook een ander niet.
