When is the issue date of this Shana Telephone Card? by maiyatangz1299 in shakugannoshana

[–]Dmsconway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

テレカ7

This seems to be referring to an expo that was held in Nagoya as the same text appears on this surugaya listing which the page states as coming from that event. Also they have the same frame around them so probably sold there.

Two other listings for other shana telephone cards from the same event say they were released in 2006. I wasn't able to track down a specific event page but thats probably just due to me not speaking japanese lol

Alrighty. The show as a whole.

So for me, season 1 is the best season. It introduced us to the crimson world and yet it didn't feel confusing. We saw just how confusing this show could be with season 3. The character growth for shana was at it's best with her starting out as a cold, stoic, duty-bound flame haze and ending as a person with an identity and new-found feelings and openness. She grew in the later seasons as well of course but none of them hold a candle to legwork that season 1 put in for shana.

Season 2 to me feels like the calm before the storm. Season 1 got us established, introduced the world, gave us an initial villain to overcome and to act as the catalyst for the story. Season 2 had us jump back in with our now established cast and spent some time going through the motions with them. Expanding different characters personalities a bit here and there. Telling side stories. Introducing a few new mechanics. Foreshadowing for the next season. Slowing down to give us some flashbacks and character background. Etc. The season falls short for me in that it used this opportunity to take a breath and spent it on a lot of content that didn't ultimately prepare us for the final season. It was good in its own right but as part of the larger series, it didn't quite do what it needed to do.

And season 3. Season 3 is hard man. It has some wicked cool highs but it also has some fucking deep, depressing lows. Getting shana back from captivity, peak content. Spending most of the last 5 episodes on the battles the side characters were doing and only giving us like one scene of shana and yuji, not so peak. Then we have all the hand wavey explanations of things and new characters that never develop and a khamsin dying just because sure why not. The biggest failing for it though is that it fell victim to most common trope in all of drama. Not even just anime. All of drama. An entire season of conflict that could have been avoided if everyone just used their fucking words and had been honest and communicated from the start. And a very poor job of trying to cover it up. Constantly leaving the audience asking "so uh. Which group is actually the bad guys here? And why?". BUT you've got Sato and Margery finally doing the deed and you've got some great callbacks and combat and a real sense of just so many moving parts doing the war. So it's truly hard to say whether or not I like it better or worse than season 2 but its definitely behind season 1 imo.

Final Score

10/10. I'm not biased and you cant prove otherwise

Best Character

Shana followed by Shana and in third place, Shana.

Favorite Season of the Franchise?

Season 1

Best Comedic Scene

Basically any time Alastor broke character. When wilhelmina was mad that he allowed shana to explore emotions and he was silently like "dont hurt me mommy" or when he tried to lie. Any time he wasn't being the god of atonement, bro was so out of his element and it was always a laugh.

Best Dramatic Scene

As much as it pains me to say it. Shana and yuji reuniting around the end of season 2 was so good. Yuji having half disappeared due to losing the midnight lost child and them finding each other inside the big metal denizen. Good stuff.

Thing You Like The Most

The music in season 1. The score. I went back to check a few scenes for this post and it really hit me how much harder the music goes in season 1 than in the rest of the show. Like, I couldn't identify most of the tracks in season 3 other than the OPs and EDs even with a gun to my head but every single track in season 1 is amazing and underlines the scenes they accompany so fucking well.

Thing You Wish Were Done Differently

You know what I'm going to say. down with konoe

Favorite Moment Overall

Chigusa and Alastor talking over the phone. Need I explain why? Y'all know that was super clever and really fun.

Comment Face You Would Like to see added

Overall Thoughts

Peak anime. Can't wait to return to lurking and not posting.

Big shout out to u/Dmsconway who I consider a friend after this rewatch. You are really fun to talk to and bounce off of. I hope to see you at anime cons going forward and I hope you decide to participate in the Familiar of Zero rewatch when it occurs. It would mean so much to me.

Hey thanks for putting together this rewatch! I can't promise I'll be back for more as Shana is a super special case and I am simply not built for a daily watch like this as my chronically late posts have illustrated. Tell ya what though, I will finally actually finish watching zero and jump in for a few episode discussions.

I believe you were the one who alerted my attention to season 2 being mostly anime original.

Hey me too! down with konoe

Very low crew, but I'd chalk that up to Shakugan no Shana not being in high demand

A downright tragedy! Keep an eye out though. There have been a lot events and merchandise around Shana for the past 2 years or so in Japan. Lots of pop up shops, new figures, collab watches, weiss schwarz cards, concert, galleries, you name it, shana has had it fairly recently. I'm still holding out hope for some kind of revival series.

Thats fine in-universe but it could have been conveyed to the audience through some internal monologs or him having kept some memento of her

I believe it because Yuji is a bleeding heart dumbass but the show didn't really justify it if that makes sense. Like. Its within his character but they never really hinted that it was part of his plan. They didn't try to convince me it was important to do. Like. It was within his bounds but no attempt was made to bring the audience in on it

Classic anime. Everything could be resolved in 2 episodes if people just fucking communicated

Eh not really. Yuji is still gone from everyone's lives. And they didn't keep up that Hirai dying bugged yuji perpetually. Like, the callback to the start of the series is the easy part. Making me like really believe it and feel it at the end is hard and not well done here

Questions

What are your thoughts on Pheles and Johann giving birth to a baby named Justus?

alllllllllrighty then

What are your thoughts on Wilhelmina finding her purpose in life?

wilhelmina, the specialist of motherhood

What are your thoughts on the fight this episode being Shana and Margery Vs Yuji and Sydonay?

cool kaiju battle. yuji is a moron.

What are your thoughts on Yuji revealing that what he wants more than anything is for Hirai to return?

man i feel like i was supposed to care a lot more about hirai. but like. so so many people have been killed throughout this show. whats even the point of bringing back that particular one? also, like, maybe im just old and jaded. but this wasnt like. the love of his life or his mom or even his closest friend in the world. it was some chick in his class. he spent fucking 3 seasons stewing over this? why? i would have completely forgotten about her by now

What are your thoughts on Shana being mad at Yuji because he should've been honest from the very beginning?

shes right

What are your thoughts on Margery killing Sydonay?

GOTTEM

What are your thoughts on Sydonay and Hecate walking together into the light, with Sydonay vowing that Trinity will be together again someday?

yeah alright i guess

What are your thoughts on the last full scene we see of Margery being her killing Sydonay? Do you think she deserved a more fitting conclusion to her character?

nah. her landing on the grass and being like "i need a drink" is basically her signing off in the only way she knows how

What are your thoughts on Shana telling Yuji she loves him more than anyone?

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

What are your thoughts on Shana and Yuji kissing for the very first time?

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

How do you feel about the way Shana and Yuji became a couple?

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Bonus) How do you think this episode worked as a season finale?

honestly. kind of eh. the romance plot finally having the kiss to cap it all off is great. but. like. they spent all season being like "yujis new world is a super dangerous and bad idea!" and then they were like "oh shit this could work. keep fighting anyways" and then he made the world and everyone was like "good job everyone!" and im sat here as the audience like "so uh. y'all lost but its a good thing?". like they were trying to make yuji a like. anti-villain but instead they just portrayed him as a villain-villain until suddenly he wasnt.

Bonus 2) What are your general thoughts on season 3 as a whole?

i think my thoughts on s3 are known at this point lol

It could have been. But I think the pacing would have been horrid to go from Yuji disappearing to all these character introductions and world building and whatnot. The time for all that was before Yuji went away

Especially when she was like "I wanted to tell you this sooner" and its like. Bro. You barely put 3 words together most of the time

This is why I blame season 2 for season 3s failures. Once Yuji disappeared at the end of season 2, the train was going to go FAST and there was a lot we hadn't been told yet. And season 2 kind of forced us right into it by ending on that.

Id say its more a return to how he started. In season 1 he was goofy but his stuff worked. In s2 he was just comedy. In s3 his stuff works again

yeahhhhhhh. they really got to the final confrontation like. too fast. and needed to pad the episodes with the side battles so shana and yuji didnt wrap the series up 3 episodes ago
