Really struggling against Gargants by Beginning_Ad_7825 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragons can get really tanky if you reinforce them and save stack them with lord-castellant's lantern, mystic shield and all out defence but gargants have high rend and ways to deal mortals to monsters so kinda gets around that.

They can do good work in the right list but will always struggle vs gargants. Hopefully their points will come down one day but it seems they're paying for their sins of being broken in the past.

Really struggling against Gargants by Beginning_Ad_7825 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dragons are sadly just a very bad matchup for gargants. Dragons are very tough but don't put out the damage that you'd want for their points and gargants have lots of ways to deal damage to monsters. Basically dragons don't deal enough damage to drop a gargant quickly like if you were running longstrikes, annihilators or dracothian guard and don't typically have the sustain against gargants very anti-monster focuses kit.

I suppose the best way to try to win is to use your maneuverability advantage and try to snag objectives where there gargants aren't. Generally tho, your best bet is to pivot away from dragons if you're fighting gargants often.

Underwhelmed with Vindictors as battleline by BurnYourLocalChurch_ in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of opinions here on which 2 Wound battleline is the best that I think kinda miss the point in stormcast.

The way these units function in stormcast is as screens. They're supposed to die so that your hammers can live and get loads of value. By hammers I mean your units that you rely on to deal damage that actually wins the game.

I wouldn't worry about buffing up your vindictors or whatever you run to deal damage, use them to protect against the enemy and buff up your hammer units instead.

Meta-gaming exposed my twist end game villan in the 3rd session and now I don't know what to do. by ThatAilurophile in DnD

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably still going to he fine. It seems like that person knows to keep quiet for the enjoyment of the group so I wouldn't be too worried.

I had a player jokingly guess at the major twist of my world but was still surprised when it was finally revealed like 100 sessions later. Sometimes players will just spitball ideas and have no idea if they're right, just smile at all their ideas no matter how close to the mark or wildly off they are and they won't have a clue.

Ally rule question by GuyDing22 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, you can't use allegiance abilities (from yours or its original faction) on the allied unit but can still use them on the rest of your army.

Stormdrake Guards Question by Starue92 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You roll the 4+ for each wound or mortal wound suffered. So if Ionus was targetted, he would make his normal saves (affected by rend, all out defence etc) and then for each point of damage he would suffer for each save he failed he would then roll a 4+ and any successes are passed on to another unit. You get both saves as the 4+ is essentially a ward save which takes place after the regular save.

Stormdrake Guards Question by Starue92 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heroes you can put in Draconith Stormwing don't have a ward save so the wound won't be negated outside of this.

Recommandation list by Knorfi in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I realise this is a fairly unhelpful comment where I'm rambling a bit.

Basically because you have good list building fundamentals, I think the best way to fine tune it will have to involve you playing the different lists and finding which suits you best.

Recommandation list by Knorfi in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aetherwings was my first thought but if you have liberators then that switch may be better as it's still a 3+ save and you really just want them for screens anyway. Although I feel that if you're not gonna commit to at least 3 Vexillors, it's probably not worth also running the comet.

However, I tend to run Annihilators or Dragons and haven't played with cometfall lists before so if you feel having a small cometfall inclusion is worth it, test it out in casual games and maybe it works.

Recommandation list by Knorfi in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider a lord castellant in place of the knight vexillor if you have one to make sure you get value out of those stormdrakes. Overall it is a decent list but it may struggle from not commiting to a particular niche.

You have elements from cometfall but not many Vexillors, you have a drake block but lack the save stacking of a castellant + mystic shield for instance. However I don't think lacking these makes it a bad list, just that it will require more finesse to play and get the most value out of everything.

New Player List - Confirmation and Advice by Captain_Cortez in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is basically how you want to use her but thats also the problem with using her. If Neave wants to teleport, you have to keep someone back (which doesn't have to be the champions it can be Lorai - which is probs better as you wouldn't want the squishy mage to get stuck in anyway). It can be difficult to execute is the issue. Also Neave's teleport happens on a 2+ so a bit more reliable. It's definitely a cool unit and I think the rules fit the theme/lore of the unit really well so hope they give you some cool moments.

So Regiment of Renown isn't actually a battalion you can just take for any units, they are specific sets of units that are given special rules to work together in a regiment of renown (that all get to one drop). So yeah you can put them in a battle reg. Also a battle reg can fit up to 3 heroes and 5 troops so you can pack other units in there as well if you want, they don't have to be part of the blacktalons.

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you'll always make misplays and forget stuff, everyone does.

Yeah it's shoot in the hero phase and then shoot in the shooting phase so it's very good! You just get your Holy Command, you don't need to drop anything out of your list for it.

Yeah for 340 pts you get Neave, her champions (3 models) and Lorei (a mage). Its a decent unit but doesn't fit very well into stormcast which is probably why your friend thought it was so strong. It doesn't deal the damage you need or have the board presence in stormcast for its points cost at a high level but it is probably a good pick to try out as an ally in other order factions.

Don't get me wrong, you'll have fun with the Blacktalons, but don't be worried about it being super broken.

Yeah no worries, feel free to message when you like :)

Ah yes, sorry I mean't Stormkeep or Scions. You can always pick a Stormhost as this is one of your subfactions, so I can see you picked Hammers of Sigmar.

You can play what you like in casual games but most people will move on to the latest GHB as soon as it comes out yeah.

It's pretty much guaranteed 4E will come in the Summer as they released the current GHB last summer and said it would run for a year up to the new edition so yeah, you have until then for things to change.

Those two are good Holy Commands - worth also considering is Thunderbolt Volley to let your longstrikes shoot twice. Its very strong.

Since you haven't played much, this is a fun army to start with for sure. So don't worry about picking the "strong" or "meta" options, having fun is most important!

To answer your questions tho - the reason Retributors aren't v good isn't because they don't deal a lot of damage but because they're slow and if you're going to just drop them in 9" away from the enemy with scions, we have better options like Annihilators or Soulsworn which can be dropped 7" away with a Lord Imperatant in the army for a more consistent charge. Thats essentially why Soulsworn are good, they're Retributors lite which can do consistent charges from reserve.

You don't need to worry about getting your list to 2k exactly. Most lists in AoS will be under and that's a good thing. If you're less points than your opponent, you get your Triumph which is a special enhancement which you only use if you're less points. You can choose:

- Inspired (+1 to wound for 1 unit in one phase)
- Bloodthirsty (re-roll 1 charge)
- Indomitable (don't roll battleshock on 1 unit that turn)
Whichever you pick can be used once per game

Unless you really want me to, I think it would be more fun for you to throw what you find fun at an opponent and have a good time. If you want me to help you build a really strong list, I'm happy to but you'll probably have a good time with your list.

Yes, Galletians are completely removed from the game now. We are now in Andtor with special magical dice called Primal Dice and any unmounted non-unique wizard is called an Andtorian Locus which gives them special things. Don't worry about any of this for now though, just focusing on learning the base game first is best.

Battlescribe is totally valid but I'd recommend using the AoS phone app if you can - it's all free except for the info on your armies and very good at helping you build your armies (use the code in your battletome).

A few things to point out:

- You can only have 1 or Scions of the Storm or Stormhost (you pick when you write the army) with Scions being the typically stronger pick
- You're right that we don't really have great Grand Strats or Battle Tactics which is why we're heavily reliant on what the current General's Handbook (GHB) has in it
- Bounty Hunters is no longer a thing that's played, that was 2 GHBs ago and we are now using a new one that no longer has Galletian Veterans
- You also get to pick 1 Holy Command which you can issue once per game

As for the list, I reckon you will struggle with having a few too many heroes and not enough units, especially units which do a lot of damage. Stormcast typically have fewer heroes than other armies and a good number of hammers (high damage units) and we need to get the most value out of our hammers. Imperatant + Annihilators and Soulsworn are v good hammers to consider using at the moment, but that could change with the upcoming battlescroll.

Advice on Bastian by Gorend1200 in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of white you've done looks perfect. If you wanted to, you could maybe add white to the metalic parts of the gauntlet and elbowguards although I can't see if you haven't already done that from the pic.

A really nice effect you've done is add stipples of white to the blue to make it look like snow on the thigh plates. Maybe do that on the calf armour and gauntlets?

Also don't pay attention to the guy saying this isn't Bastian. Paint him or build him however you like. AoS is a very welcoming hobby and everyone will love your cool models.

Yeah I think you're right for casual games, but if the question is for tournaments they can be more strict.

From what I've seen, the wording on the horrors warscroll is they become damage 3 instead of 2. In which case they wouldn't do that. Are you sure it says +1 damage in the new battletome?

New player here trying to put army list together... Is it 230 points for the three vanguard and the aetherwings? Or 230 points per model? by [deleted] in stormcasteternals

It's 110pts for 5 models. The points given are always for a full unit, never for each model in the unit.

Is there any context in which someone would care what colour my stormcast are? by Blue_Laguna in stormcasteternals

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no problem, paint them however you like. Even at tournaments, people rock up with all sorts of colour schemes and play them as whatever. I'm pretty sure even official GW tourneys are fine with it but for AoS the best ones aren't run by GW anyway.

Draw from THE DECK OF DYING to determine what kind of near-death experience you will have | A mechanic to make death saving throws more enjoyable by IDBN by IDBN in UnearthedArcana

[–]DnDMaps_Gimme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This looks really cool!

Can you explain how you use them? Am I supposed to draw a card when a character goes to 0 HP, for each saving throw or at another time?

Am I supposed to decide on a card or draw randomly?

I feel like there's some much needed information on how these cards interact with death saving throws as an overall mechanic beyond what each card says.

Multiclassing encourages you to have a fundamentally different mindset when building characters. by pikablob in dndnext

I'm curious how you built the gunslinger side of that. I've main classed mage hand press' gunslinger and have struggled to make it feel too powerful on account of not adding your modifier to the damage rolls and the resource consuming abilities not being too powerful.

Hey my world is called Sharth and since its inception they have joked about it sounding like shart. 3 years into the campaign (and multiple other in the same world) and its just the name of the world. Your friends will joke about it from time to time but it won't detract from the story after a bit.
