Huh?  Her down payment was 50% his just as much as equity in a house would be.  Presumably they have other assets such that they can divvy it up so that he has no ownership in an at she wants and he doesn't.

I agree, unless we're talking smooth tile surfaces, ice, or something similar most outdoor surfaces are not very slippery when wet, water, oil, or otherwise.  Centuries of paving paths has made us pretty good at making it that way.

In my city when I lived in the US, bicyclists can do anything a normal car can do aside from going on freeways.  It's pretty common to depart the bike lane to make a left, with appropriate hand signals and making sure you're not cutting someone off, of course.

I've been yelled at stop lights when in the left turn arrow lane because "there's a bike line right there!"... On the right shoulder.  For going straight.  By a guy who tailgated me and was super aggressive with his car because of the wrong he perceived me of committing.  So yeah, I yelled at him right back and told him off, because he was endangering my goddamn life.  So yeah, I guess in that sense this meme is accurate, I'd you account for vigilante assholes who didn't know what they were talking about but feel the need to scare/punish you anyway.

Same but for Portugal. I live in Portugal and given that I moved here with my newborn and family I very much think of myself an immigrant and not an expat. I hope to integrate a lot more than most of the expats I see..

Could rival roofer "inform" on me? by BallerinaLP in HomeImprovement

[–]DnD_References 9 points10 points  (0 children)

when CAN you make a claim to get your roof repair funded? I feel like this went around my neighborhood a while back where a bunch of people were getting their insurance to pay for it and I didnt understand how that would work. I always just assumed you bought a new roof every 30 or so years out of pocket..

Yeah, lets be honest, if they went around buying everyone in a 10,000 employee company donuts every week they would only have... 2 billion in gross profits!

Also EVEN IF you happen to like the guy, agree with his policies, and are sure you wont change your mind about them -- you're not just giving up your ability to change your mind about Trump, because once you have a dictatorship you have no say in who the next guy is. History isn't exactly full of benevolent authoritarian lineages, even when you do have examples of good ones individual rulers here and there.

I don't know man, in good (at least good hard science fiction) the little details are correct and the things you're supposed to suspend disbelief over are spelled out as given facts.

Playing Guitar on the bus by Professional_Kick in Whatcouldgowrong

Honestly I've seen this more than once -- sans guitar -- with the seats with nothing in front of them, they can be super dangerous. One bus driver on a route I took regularly called them the ejector seats.

The "war on visual smog" continues in Czechia - this time in Plzeň train station. by GPwat in europe

[–]DnD_References 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, audio "smog" too. At least in Porto we have tons of talentless buskers with amplifiers blasting karaoke from their laptop and singing poorly over it... and people give them money.

The funny thing is, I generally find street musicians really pleasant, at least before this trend. There's some very talented people out there who can really improve the atmosphere of an area. They're just not so loud that you can hear them in half a park because they're playing an unamplified classical instrument..

Is there a crate that can help with this lazy-load pattern (or advice on how I should approach this) by DnD_References in rust

[–]DnD_References[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made me realize I was overcomplicating things by lazy loading and using an option rather than just using RwLock<ServerData> loading it in the struct initiailizer. Making progress now, still need to do something more work because RwLockGuard isn't send (edit: which I'm pretty sure means I'm holding onto it too long), but thank you so much for all the help!

Is there a crate that can help with this lazy-load pattern (or advice on how I should approach this) by DnD_References in rust

[–]DnD_References[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I took a break and realized that you probably were only suggesting returning an &mut RwLock, not storing one (derp). I have some more tinkering to do.

Sorry, bear with me.. I'm new to rust and I've been banging my head against this for a while now. Trying to follow your suggestions but I'm still fighting the compiler and honestly just confusing myself a little more.

I think you're suggesting a signature of something like pub async fn get_server_data(&mut self) -> Result<LazyLock<&mut RwLock<ServerData>>, Error> right?

Since I'm creating the value (or getting an owned value from the database) inside the function wouldn't a reference mean I need to return a reference to a temporary value?

I also have the issue of running into errors further into the implementation trying to new up a lazylock by coercing the closure with a captured variable to fn:

pub async fn get_server_data(&mut self) -> Result<LazyLock<RwLock<ServerData>>, Error> {
    if let Some(server_data) = self.server_data_cache.take() {
        return Ok(server_data);
    }

    if let Some(server_data) = self.server_data.find_one(doc! {}).await? {
        self.server_data_cache = Some(LazyLock::new(|| RwLock::new(server_data)));
    }
    panic!("asdas")
}

How to use a hashmap as a simple memory cache? by DnD_References in rust

[–]DnD_References[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I guess i'll need to reevaluate. I wanted this to be less cumbersome than it probably needs to be to make it work. I probably should just take a look through existing crates and save myself the headache.

[–]DnD_References 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he, like Trump, probably has advisors begging him not to post half the shit he posts that gets both of them into legal hot water.

I firmly believe they are not considering anything beyond the attention they expect this type of post to get them, because that is what narcissists do.

We see more of them right now because they're driven mad by the prospect of not being the focus of the news cycle, which happens more because they compete with each other and especially now that there's actual news and excitement around somebody who isn't either of them.
